How much do you drink? Honestly

Hi,

I'm sure this has been done to death, but I guess I was just feeling a bit nosey.

So we've just had dry January and there are more teetotalers in this country now than ever before, but we're still very much a drinking nation, aren't we?

So quite simply, how much do you drink(if anything)? And if you do drink, what kind of drinker are you? I.e, do you only drink at the weekend? Are you mostly dry, but when you drink, you binge? Or do you drink throughout the week? Are you happy with your drinking? Do you worry about it?

I suppose I should go first Blush

This week I've had just one dry day (ooops- stressed, but only a small glass in the evening) but usually I'm dry in the week, but will drink Friday until Sunday. Not constantly Grin but I'd say a couple of bottles of wine in that time, if I'm being completely honest, which I know is slightly over the RWA.

I definitely over indulged over Christmas and I always do when I'm on holiday. That said, I never drink to get drunk, although I do enjoy that slightly tipsy, merry feeling.

Ok, over to you....

Realistically you're not going to get a fair reflection here. People who are fine with what they drink / don't drink will happily contribute. Those that know they are drinking far too much are less likely to do so! Hats off to those that have though. The responses on here are not at all representative of my friendship circles, but I think we all know we need to drink a bit less.

ChestyNut · 01/02/2019 17:35

Very rarely here. Snowballs and baileys at Christmas. Went to a wedding in January, that will probably be it until Christmas.

anxiousbundle · 01/02/2019 17:44

Literally nothing, I can't due to my epilepsy medication. I used to drink every now and then whilst on it but it made me feel so ill.

Really used to enjoy a nice gin and tonic/ glass of white wine. I was never a huge drinker though and only ever had one drink whenever I was in a situation where people were drinking/at home etc.

My doctor has advised me that no alcohol is best.

There will be a skewed response on this thread I reckon

RoseMartha · 01/02/2019 17:47

Nothing

Flower777 · 01/02/2019 17:50

I will hold my hand up and say that I will happily answer this because I rarely drink and am just not drawn to alcohol at all.

However I would be less willing to answer questions about my diet!!

C0untDucku1a · 01/02/2019 17:53

If i go out of the house on a weekend maybe three max four g&t.

If in the house a couple of shandys on a fri and saturday.

AnotherPidgey · 01/02/2019 18:05

I'm a light, sporadic drinker. I'll have a can of gin & tonic type mixers or cider every so often. I can easily go a month without thinking about it. I realised in my 20s that the digestive side effects were off putting more than the fuzzy head, and I always was a cheap night out.

Nights out are rare. I might have a few drinks then, but naturally stop when I'm happy and smiley and haven't progressed to drunk since 2015, and can't remember how many years it was before that.

I probably drink more in December and August (bbq season) than I do in the other 10 months of the year.

PinkGin24 · 01/02/2019 18:09

Honestly....

Week nights are anything from 1 glass of spirit and mixer to 2/3 glasses of spirit and mixer (G&T or Bacardi & Coke). If a particuarly trying day a glass of wine too.

Weekend usually 2/3 spirit and mixer and half a bottle of wine.

PinkGin24 · 01/02/2019 18:11

Haha just read back through the comments. Mine is certainly the highest here I reckon.

But equally, I am happy with what I drink. Should I drink less, probably. But I am not ashamed of what I drink. I know people who won't drink at all week but will get excessively drunk at the weekend (total binge) - not sure what is best!?

anniehm · 01/02/2019 18:15

Not a lot on average, prefer fruit tea these days! We open wine on Fridays often but otherwise only if I'm out when I will have a beer (I'm very fussy which one)

IrenetheQuaint · 01/02/2019 18:21

I don't usually drink during the week, but occasionally have a pint with friends/work colleagues.

Usually 2-3 pints or glasses of wine over the weekend to accompany dinner with friends.

About once a month I have a night out with work or go to a dinner party and drink a bit more, but never get really hammered.

SauvignonMum · 01/02/2019 18:29

2 bottles of wine every week.
(See username)

I know that it's 6 units over what's recommended, but meh, it's my only vice

Nomdejeur · 01/02/2019 18:31

More than I should, less than an alcoholic.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/02/2019 18:33

How much do I drink?
Not enough, my fluid intake is too low.

How much alcohol do I drink?
None.

Huntlybyelection · 01/02/2019 18:35

I don't like hangovers so rarely drink to excess.

In general, I don't drink. Perhaps 1 glass of wine or one can of mixed spirit or one g&t per month.

I go out maybe every other month. Generally share bottles of prosecco so maybe 2/3 a bottle worth? I often dont drink on a night out or drink little because I can't be bothered with hangovers any more. Don't have the time for them.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 01/02/2019 18:36

I'm in AA so no. But could have easily done four bottles of wine a day many years ago. And a very good friend got through two litres of gin a day. Nothing now.

Tinyteatime · 01/02/2019 18:42

I’ve recently been thinking I should actually count my units. I have about 1.5 bottles wine per week and maybe 1or 2 g&ts. I try not to drink more than 3 nights per week. It’s the extra calories I’m not happy with. I wouldn’t be worried about cutting down if it wasn’t for that but currently trying to lose a few post baby pounds.

Asta19 · 01/02/2019 18:46

I’ll answer honestly. I probably need help.
I drink every night without fail because if I don’t I feel really edgy, can’t relax, can’t sleep. I don’t get drunk anymore.

Thing is the volume isn’t huge each time. I usually have one beer early evening then half a bottle of wine through the rest of the evening. Maybe 3 nights a week I don’t have a beer but then will usually drink a full bottle of wine. Don’t touch spirits.

People say it always gets worse but it really hasn’t for me. I never drink in the day, the amount hasn’t increased for years now. I’ve been drinking at this level for about 5 years. And I’ve been working from home for a year so, if I was going to slip into daytime drinking, that would have been the time. That’s not an excuse or justification. I know my units are still way way over what they should be. But just making the point that not everyone slides deeper and deeper into drinking.

I’ve tried to have dry days but I end up giving in every time. i like living alone but it doesn’t help when you could do with someone to motivate you! (Or tell you off!). I’m planning to go to the GP and get the drug I can never remember the name of! But basically you take it on days you don’t want to drink and it helps with the craving. I don’t want to stop completely and I (maybe foolishly) don’t think I need to. But I do need some dry days. I have tried non alcoholic red wine, several brands, but I find them all too sweet. I tried mixing half non alcoholic and half alcoholic but that tasted worse! I don’t suffer any negatives from my drinking but I am worried about the long term effect on my health.

luckylavender · 01/02/2019 18:50

An occasional G&T at the weekend, not every weekend by any means & more at say Christmas / Easter when I may have a couple of glasses of wine / champagne every day for a week. Went on holiday to Thailand in October & didn't drink any alcohol in two weeks. If people try to make me, I'm even more likely not to drink.

flatpackbox · 01/02/2019 18:50

Haven't RTWT but virtually nothing these days, I did have a few drinks when staying with family at Christmas and had two drinks two weekends ago when out with friends for the evening.

I used to drink at home, gin or wine, maybe 2.5 bottles a week at the most on a heavy week.

I stopped enjoying it as much as I did so I stopped drinking.

Still have a full wine rack and a bottle of gin plus a bottle of sherry I use instead of Madeira in mushroom risotto. But I just don't enjoy it.

I get a Majestic case of 16 bottles of wine every 12 weeks and STBXH drinks it until it has gone (but never replaces it!).

I now drink naice tea instead in the evening.

flatpackbox · 01/02/2019 18:50

p.s. not 2.5 bottles of gin a week - just wine Grin.

Yabbers · 01/02/2019 18:51

Not a drop. Hate the stuff.

daipaned · 01/02/2019 19:36

I'm a binge drinker. I can go for months drinking nothing then drink a lot on a night out/weekend away. On my last night out I drank 6 gin and tonics, three glasses of Prosecco, two cocktails and three shots
I hardly ever drink at home, I like the odd baileys coffee, a few g&t's over Christmas. Very occasionally DH and I have wine with dinner, usually if I've used it in cooking.

namechange2117 · 01/02/2019 19:41

I used to drink a bottle of wine a night on average, totalling about 70 units a week. It got to the point where it was really affecting my life (both work and personal) and my mental health. I posted on here about it a while ago.

Since 1st January I’ve cut right back and am now alcohol free four nights a week (usually Monday to Thursday) and then drink a bottle of wine per night Friday to Sunday. I’ve kept it up for five weeks now and managed to do 20 days sober in January - a huge achievement for me.

I’m still drinking way too much (30 units p/w compared to the recommended 14), but I’m proud that I’ve managed to halve my total weekly units since 1st January.

My next goal is to get down to 20 units p/w by moderating more successfully on the three days that I do drink.

It’s an ongoing process but I really feel I’m going to get there this time.
