How about a thread about puddings?

We've had a cake thread recently and very good it was too. Made me think about puddings and how much I really enjoy a decent pud, even though I don't eat them very often.

My favourites are warm Bakewell tart/pudding with custard, a proper steamed golden syrup sponge, dark gingerbread with custard, really rich chocolate mousse.

Can you tell it's cold where I am! Hot puddings all the way (although mousse is not got obviously).

Ooh my favourite waffle is from Kaspa’s dessert restaurant - I always have the same thing - a waffle drizzled with peanut butter and Nutella, sliced banana and sliced strawberries, all served with whippy ice cream.

Pudding for dinner is my favourite Grin

There's a definite distinction between puddings and desserts isn't there? Puddings are generally stodgy, served hot with custard and are something you want in winter. Desserts are more often served cold, are lighter (tiramisu excepted!) and are enjoyable all year round.

Appreciation of all puddings and desserts welcome here Grin

I'm making lemon curd steam pudding tonight, been for a run today so one cancels the other out...

Cold - cheesecake

Hot- bread and butter pudding with home made custard, or sticky toffee pudding, or apple crumble and custard

SilverySurfer · 02/02/2019 15:29

With this cold weather I really fancied a home made rice pudding - my favourite bit is the nutmeg crust. Went to measure out the rice and batteries in the scales have died. Just trying to decide if I should risk throwing the ingredients together and hope for the best.

Actually my all time favourite is yorkshire pudding with Victoria plums, a bit like a clafoutis.

DuggeesWoggle · 02/02/2019 18:35

What did you do about the rice pudding, SilverySurfer? I love one made with coconut milk, so rich and creamy! I tend to make mine in the slow cooker as I'm not a huge fan of the skin. But a good buttery traditional rice pudding is also hard to beat

Rum baba!

JustLurkingAway · 02/02/2019 18:42

Got to be sticky toffee pudding with cold custard/ice cream or m&s chocolate puddings with custard!

AgeBeforeBeauty · 02/02/2019 18:44

Apple crumble with a hint of cinnamon, and lovely thick custard - yum!

Mainly crumble though, with a touch of apple Wink

MyPatronusIsAnOrca · 02/02/2019 18:46

Apple crumble with custard
Creme brûlée
Jam sponge with custard. This is a childhood favourite. A sponge cake with a jam topping (instead of icing) served with custard. Never found anything like it again so have to make do with jam tarts and custard.

I like custard, can you tell Grin

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/02/2019 18:55

I'm making creme caramel tonight (to go after crab salad, then steak frites), tomorrow is a roast so I'm making a treacle tart, which has to be had with clotted cream.

I do excellent steamed puddings (with homemade custard), which people always love as no bugger bothers to make a steamed pudding anymore.

I cook fewer variety of puddings than I do other foods, primarily because I only make them at the weekends or when we have guests.

My stalwarts are steamed puddings, tarts (apple and plum in Autumn, treacle in winter and strawberry or citron in summer), crumbles, creme caramel or brulle, sticky toffee or pavlova (strawberry in summer, passion fruit in winter).

I occasionally try a new one, or may make baklava, kulfi or Mexican flan if we're having the appropriate main course, but always come back to these as they're always a winner.

Oh and sorbet, always goes down well (I offer it alongside a proper pud before anyone has conniptions).

Violetroselily · 02/02/2019 19:28

Sticky toffee pudding with custard (or ice cream)
Trifle
Fruit Pavlova with mountains of cream
Chocolate cream roulade
Lemon meringue pie
Jam sponge with custard
Apple crumble and custard

Violetroselily · 02/02/2019 19:29

I once had an amazing bread and butter pudding made with brioche and marmalade

Shodan · 02/02/2019 19:38

Lemon meringue pie is my all time favourite pudding.

Then a good old-fashioned sherry trifle.

And Christmas pudding with cream. Or custard. Or both. But not nasty brandy butter.

Oh and cherry pie.

I also used to love one of Wimpy's puddings, I think it was called a Brown Derby- warm doughnut topped with Mr whippy-style ice cream, chocolate sauce and nuts Grin

I want pudding now.

halfwitpicker · 02/02/2019 19:42

For me a pudding has to have that damp, flour based, yielding spongey texture. Preferably cloyingly sweet and sticking to the hips.

A dessert is more French based, creamy mousses etc. Kind of like a Brit's skinny, gluten free French cousin.

spudlet7 · 02/02/2019 19:43

What's the lemon meringue one in a roll? I got it mixed up with jam roly poly once and tried to order it with custard

spudlet7 · 02/02/2019 19:43

Also brownies and anything with custard

spudlet7 · 02/02/2019 19:44

Profiteroles

halfwitpicker · 02/02/2019 19:44

Fuck me ilikeyourhairyhands, where's my dinner invitation? Sounds fabulous Grin

Elderflower14 · 02/02/2019 19:45

@spudlet7 You are thinking of a Roulade....
☺

DuggeesWoggle · 02/02/2019 20:22

Looks like we're all off to HairyHands' house for dinner then! Grin

Bread and butter pudding, how could I forget? And yes yes yes to one made from marmalade and brioche!!

Bloodybridget · 02/02/2019 20:44

Shodan I remember the Wimpy Bar Brown Derby! I suspect if we ate it now, we'd find it pretty revolting!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/02/2019 21:29

Aha! Thank you. I bloody love cooking and eating (and drinking). I'm about to turn out my creme caramel, I shall send a (hopefully) triumphant photo.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/02/2019 21:34

Creme caramel!

How about a thread about puddings?
Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 02/02/2019 21:42

The Aldi profiteroles tower is amazing and covered in thick chocolate.
Also love tiramisu, any kind of pudding with custard, cheesecake and anything chocolatey.
