Question about The Chase quiz show

Cannothtinkofaname · 31/01/2019 09:05

Me & OH love The Chase and watch it when ever we can but now have a query.

When they are playing the against the chaser for the money, once Brad asks the question, I thought there was a set time to be answered, as he sometimes says "I need an answer".

However OH reckons the timing doesn't start until the first answer is given, hence the pressure press.

Does anyone know please, and does this even make sense!

I think once the first player has pressed, the other player has 5 seconds to press. So as your DH says, that's why if someone knows the answer, that's why they press so fast as it puts pressure on their opponent. Presumably Bradley's "I need an answer" is to the person who hasn't pressed yet.

GnothiSeafton · 31/01/2019 09:40

In the final round (the team first then the chaser), if the chaser gets a question wrong then the team get the opportunity to answer the question. So I guess that they get limited time to answer the question, hence Bradley's "I need an answer".

I think a few MNers have been on The Chase over the years - maybe one of them can explain the rules!

Cannothtinkofaname · 31/01/2019 10:01

Cornish - So maybe DH is right then. I'm going to watch it tonight and count 5 seconds!

Gnothi - I thought they would get a time limit on the final chase but it was just this pressure press that I wasn't sure about.

Thanks for your replies and I'd love to hear from somebody who has been on there. I remember a while ago somebody was on here saying they had appeared but were kicking themselves as they got an easy question wrong but knew the answer, the nerves just took over.

It's so easy sitting on the settee watching, we all think it's so easy Smile

Also somebody had been on The Chase and The Weakest Link and said that Brad's lines are all ad-lib where as Ann's were fed to her. He makes the show, he's so natural.

I am with you and DH OP
I really enjoy watching The Chase .
I used to like

and my favourite (but was not a student so could never apply) Blockbusters

When they are at the table the clock doesn't start ticking until someone has answered, sometimes if the contestant doesn't know the answer they will do a pressure press (literally press any button) putting the chaser under a time pressure. Recently one of the chasers ran out of time when the contestant did a pressure press

JollyAndBright · 31/01/2019 10:13

@Merryoldgoat

You are the expert, how does it work?

DoneLikeAKipper · 31/01/2019 10:14

He makes the show, he's so natural.

According to someone I know who’s been on the show, he turns it on and off. He was a right arse the day the person I knew was on it apparently, made them feel really pressured when on the spot.

GnothiSeafton · 31/01/2019 10:20

Ah, sorry, I got confused. I now see you mean the round where it's each individual contestant Vs the chaser.

Cannothtinkofaname · 31/01/2019 11:22

Donelike - oh hope that's not true about Brad, I've only heard good things about him.

When you think though, they make several episodes in one day so it must get a bit wearing for him, not excusing him though if that was true.

Cannothtinkofaname · 31/01/2019 11:22

It's ok Gnothi, I probably didn't explain myself very well.

@jollyandbright - Grin

In the round with 1 contestant and the chaser there is no actual time limit. The time starts counting down from when the first person answers the question.

If there is a question that neither party is sure about you can both just have a think for basically as long as you like.

Once one of you has pressed the other has a limited amount of time (I think 5 seconds) to give the answer or be timed out.

When I was on there were at least two questions that we both had a good think about before answering, one I answered first putting him under some pressure. Obviously all the waiting time is edited out.

Bradley is a bit intense at the start when he 'gets to know you' but during the actual gameplay he's really nice and encourages you to enjoy yourself and have a bit of bantz.

Seriously an immensely fun day out if anyone is thinking of having a go.

elemenopeee · 31/01/2019 11:30

That show is such a con!!

elemenopeee · 31/01/2019 11:33

For example - in the final chase, the contestants lose time because they make Brad announce the name of whoever has pressed the buzzer instead of that person just being able to state their answer. If you imagine saying someone's name 16-20 times, that's how many seconds the contestants lose.

He always speeds up asking questions to the Chaser.

And did you see the final chase with Ann where on the final second, the countdown stayed at 00:01 for three seconds!!

The doctor always gets medical questions.

They were first on, early in the week. However, everyone can wake up on the wrong side of the bed I guess.

lostinjapan · 31/01/2019 11:57

Your OH is correct. The five seconds starts once the first player gives their answer. So you sometimes see both the player and the Chaser sitting around for 15 seconds and contemplating their answer.

For example - in the final chase, the contestants lose time because they make Brad announce the name of whoever has pressed the buzzer instead of that person just being able to state their answer. If you imagine saying someone's name 16-20 times, that's how many seconds the contestants lose.

That's one of the reasons they get a one step headstart for each player in the final chase. What would the alternative be? Get rid of the buzzers and let anyone shout the answer (which would be carnage)? Or have the Chaser buzz in and have their name announced on every single question (which would be silly)?

He always speeds up asking questions to the Chaser.

So when there's 30 seconds left and the Chaser needs 10 to win, should Bradley calmly read the questions at a leisurely pace? Because that would eliminate all tension, as it would be impossible for the Chaser to win. He doesn't do it to help the Chaser, it's just to keep it exciting.

Merryoldgoat · 31/01/2019 12:04

This isn't really true - the buzzer is linked to a recording of your name (great fun to play with) and you can answer the question immediately - Bradley doesn't announce so it's very fast. If you are on your own then you obviously don't have to buzz.

Cannothtinkofaname · 31/01/2019 14:34

Merryoldgoat - so I'm thinking you have been a contestant? Sorry if you've already said before, but who was your Chaser and how did you get on?

I always thought about the calling the name in the final chase and thought it was unfair but now it's been explained, it does make sense. Quite a few beat the Chaser as well, so easily do-able.

OP posts:
elemenopeee · 31/01/2019 16:51

@lostinjapan He should read the questions at the same pace he read them to to contestants - but he doesn't.

elemenopeee · 31/01/2019 16:52

If pressing of the buzzer is linked to a 'recording of your name' then it could just as easily be linked to your own light coming on - much fairer.

lostinjapan · 31/01/2019 17:13

He should read the questions at the same pace he read them to to contestants - but he doesn't.

Only if he wants to remove all fun, excitement and tension from half of the final chases.

Merryoldgoat · 31/01/2019 20:05

elemenopeee

No, because the correct person has to answer. More than one person might buzz at the same time so it’s the name that dictates who’s question it is. If you had 4 people looking for a light that would take far more time and cause more confusion.

@Cannothtinkofaname

I’m not allowed to say anything about my actual show online until it airs (only recorded a week or so before Christmas) but I didn’t embarrass myself, it was a male chaser and I got to hear my name on the buzzer Grin

Everyone was very nice and the chaser was very complimentary about me which has basically made my life.

elemenopeee · 02/02/2019 21:49

@lostinjapan Ah, I see where the difference between us is. I think when you play a game, you play fairly, and you don't cheat.

Cannothtinkofaname · 04/02/2019 07:51

Merryoldgoat - I didn't realise your appearance hasn't been shown yet. I bet it will feel strange watching yourself on TV - and I bet you'll be shouting out all the answers. Smile

OP posts:
Merryoldgoat · 04/02/2019 11:51

I’m so excited to see it - it sort of feels like a weird dream from ages ago if that makes sense?

It was a seriously fun day out - pissing around with your team is just loads of fun.
