What do you think will be the next big thing?

Not a TAAT as such, but inspired by the bored of salted caramel thread.

We've had pulled pork everything, salted caramel everything, and all alcohol became first Prosecco and then gin. Donuts are big and before that people charged a fortune for cupcakes. Accessories were unicorns and flamingos, now llamas and cacti.

What's next, do you think?

Artisan gherkins? Poutine? Wombats?

If I could choose, right now I would probably douse everything in nacho cheese.

Poke won't work here. Too cold and rainy. Smiths have been done already. Kimchi is popular. Turmeric or has that passed now.

MargotLovedTom1 · 29/01/2019 22:12

We were right muddling! Wink

IAmFrau - do you mean Poitin/ poteen?

Loyaultemelie · 29/01/2019 22:16

Halfwitpicker I'm loving that (as farmers desperate to diversify!)

Hate beards though they seem to be everywhere yuck

BowBeau · 29/01/2019 22:27

Another vote for rum being huge in 2019.

DH has one to cover his weak chin. He had it before it was trendy and will still have it when it’s gone out of fashion. In fact he can’t get rid of it unless balaclavas suddenly become trendy!

SpoonBlender · 29/01/2019 22:30

Rum's already huge. It bumped over the tired corpse of gin in late 2017, according to a bar owner friend - and a couple of talks at the rum festival I recently went to confirmed.

I love both - and whisky - so I'm fine, it's just a bit disappointing that rum is now more expensive due to trendiness. Oh well.

ThisCoolBean · 29/01/2019 22:46

Bubble tea bars.

Drogosnextwife · 29/01/2019 22:48

I've noticed a lot of pineapples and French bull dogs.

daisydalrymple · 29/01/2019 23:03

I think cava will try to oust prosecco, and vodka may take up more shelf space on bars too. Revival time for both.

‘Dairy free’ alternatives will be more widely available in restaurants / pubs / cafes, due to demand from lifestyle choice not just intolerances.

Muffster · 29/01/2019 23:13

If you like rum...
Try Seven Fathoms Golden Rum, our local effort.

It’s REALLY smooth and absolutely gorgeous. It’s matured in barrels under the sea! Seven fathoms down in the Caribbean

I am not paid to say this, I just live here and adore the stuff

What do you think will be the next big thing?
MissMarplesKnitting · 29/01/2019 23:14

Oh yay to bubble tea bars if that's true because i LOVE it.

MissMarplesKnitting · 29/01/2019 23:14

Taking note @muffster

IamFrauBlucher · 29/01/2019 23:26

@MargotLovedTom1 yes 😂😂😂

It's a constant autocorrect typo on my German spellchecking keyboard.

IamFrauBlucher · 29/01/2019 23:38

With regards to a sipping rum (ie not as a mixer) most of the Plantation rums are very interesting, I can also recommend Diplomatico, Flor De Caña. All Delicious!

Our best seller is a French rum called Courcelles, but to be honest I find it at $500+ a bottle to be pretentious perfumed shite.

HesterShaw21 · 30/01/2019 00:03

Mezcal? Matcha? Kefir?

Kombucha tastes awful to me Envy

IamFrauBlucher · 30/01/2019 00:10

I was really trying to push Mezcal @HesterShaw21

But as it's usually filtered through the stretched carcass of a turkey it won't sit with the upcoming vegan wave I guess!!!Grin

SpoonBlender · 30/01/2019 00:17

FrauBlucher Plantation was one of the talks I went to (Paul, splendid loony that he is), they have a wonderful selection! Got their xo20, Stiggins Fancy and OFTD in the cellar (amongst many others)

@muffster Dug through the site and found a UK supplier, www.thewhiskyexchange.com/search?q=seven+fathoms - shall put it on the wish list :) Bit spendy though.

As for the actual thread... Poutine would be excellent, I'm well up for that.

Trendy bagel bars. Might be good as a backlash against all this fucking antisemitism that's in the air at the moment.

I'm hoping smart watches take off, because every time a smart watch pings instead of a phone, someone looks at the alert message and then gets on with their life - they don't immediately open the phone up and spend half an hour on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter/Tinder/Mumsnet/whateverthefuck.

Nice shoes on men, instead of trainers.

Electric cars going mainstream. I'm really waiting for an electric motorbike though!

Muffster · 30/01/2019 00:22

@MissMarplesKnitting hope you enjoy

RedWineIsFabulous · 30/01/2019 00:26

Muffster

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/01/2019 01:10

Houseplants and terrariums, undyed grey hair, flat shoes, teetotallers

payperview · 30/01/2019 01:42

Nah, bubble tea is on its way out. Also rolled ice cream/stir fried ice cream must be out soon. Silly fad.

I predict it'll be a fruit-based dessert that's popular next. Or pancakes.

Walnutwhipster · 30/01/2019 01:43

Rum, butter, sloths and corgis.

Walnutwhipster · 30/01/2019 01:45

iPhones are going the way of BlackBerry, android is definitely the way to go.

Zacksnan · 30/01/2019 01:46

Juice will be the next big thing. Mark my words. Everything juiced.

halfwitpicker · 30/01/2019 01:49

Veganism for sure
People opting out of using social media, cos they're so cool and with it
