What do you think will be the next big thing?

Not a TAAT as such, but inspired by the bored of salted caramel thread.

We've had pulled pork everything, salted caramel everything, and all alcohol became first Prosecco and then gin. Donuts are big and before that people charged a fortune for cupcakes. Accessories were unicorns and flamingos, now llamas and cacti.

What's next, do you think?

Artisan gherkins? Poutine? Wombats?

If I could choose, right now I would probably douse everything in nacho cheese.

Avocado can fuck off. I'm allergic to it and they put that shit on everything.

Man buns never should have started.

FerretyFemale · 29/01/2019 21:09

Ferrets should be the next big thing! 😉

FlibbertyGiblets · 29/01/2019 21:12

WhoWants follow that dream! I was in London not that long ago and peeked into the community garden beside Tate Modern and thought it wonderful.

HugoBearsMummy · 29/01/2019 21:14

I've just been thrown an afternoon tea party (instead of a baby shower as such as I didn't want one) and the amount of gifts I was given with swans on surprised me- I think swans may be overtaking unicorns on baby girl items perhaps?

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/01/2019 21:16

I think tea bars and kombucha are very present already. They are in Shoreditch anyway - and usually where Shoreditch goes, everyone else seems to follow.

I noticed walking along Redchurch St today that my old favourite coffee bar (that was so hip they used to serve free gin and tonics on a Sun morning if they liked the look of you - but the gin was made by a guy under the arches in Hackney and wasn't available to buy anywhere and the tonic was also handmade in Hackney using cinchona root)....anyway, the coffee bar has now reopened as a "tea bar". So I think yes, the tea bar has landed. And just round the corner at Browns East, one of their current installations is a Kombucha bar. Smile

I'd be happy with a poutine trend if it made poutine more accessible. I love poutine SO SO much!!

There seemed to be an attempt at a Hawaiian poke trend near me but it seems to have failed. Which is good. I don't like poke. Rum is very welcome though!

I think hair slides will be in. They already seem to be on their way. For women so far. Maybe the manbun crowd will move on to wearing hair slides too. Grin

MyHairNeedsASnip · 29/01/2019 21:19

Haha, yes we're due a banana clip revival too surely!

EnidButton · 29/01/2019 21:19

Vegan beauty products including make up. Veganism in general (think that's already started)

Agree with rum and although I don't drink, I can say that rum butter is infinitely superior to brandy butter and hope that by next Christmas everyone realises this.

Drinks (including milk) in bags rather than bottles.

TooMinty · 29/01/2019 21:21

Someone told me about over a year ago that rum would be the next trendy drink. I have told loads of people this, maybe I've caused the trend?!

runoutofnamechanges · 29/01/2019 21:22

I think poutine and artisan tea places, along with jamon bars, were the last big thing rather than the next, based on if DM (79) has heard of it and tried the trend, it probably isn't cool any more. Which is pretty much how I judged things as a teenager Grin Only difference is, now I think my mum is uber cool.

Rum is definitely on the up. DS is going to a secret lagoon rum cocktail pop up for his birthday.

Luglio · 29/01/2019 21:23

Whisky. No question.

Totallyaddictedtoshoes · 29/01/2019 21:26

Rum is definitely going to be the new gin, that plus craft ale still seem to be going strong. Tacos seem to be everywhere too (Mexican street food in general actually-no complaints from me!). Agree with the pp who said vegan food, jackfruit has popped up on half a dozen menus I've looked at recently.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 29/01/2019 21:30

Whisky

Korean food (especially kimchi)

Animal print clothes (again)

Grapefruit

EnidButton · 29/01/2019 21:31

Rum has a cool history behind it in the UK from what I vaguely remember without googling. Smugglers and pirates I think. Probably problematic if looked into but on the surface it's cool.

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/01/2019 21:39

Vegan is massive where I live. We seem to have more vegan cafes/restaurants than coffee shops now. It's the current big thing rather than the next big thing.

Raspberry88 · 29/01/2019 21:40

Definitely raccoons!

Muddlingalongalone · 29/01/2019 21:40

I hope you are right about grapefruit @Crispbutty#1 - maybe pink grapefruit calippos will make a comeback...

WhoWants2Know · 29/01/2019 21:44

Rum fudge is nice. I'm in.

Seeing as things come full circle then I predict a return of the 80's with massive shoulder pads and leg warmers for women. For men I predict mullet hairstyles.

IamFrauBlucher · 29/01/2019 21:47

I am the buyer for spirits for a niche retailer and I had a lot of suppliers hoisting poutine in their range last year, alongside moonshine in jam jars.

We've bottled our own rum at source - it's a great all rounder drink.

We've bottled a LE marzadro grappa at the end of the year finished in a calvados barrel. Grappa has really improved in flavor and there are some really smooth flavor some ones out there on trend in Europe.

Regardless of the spirit I think pairing will become bigger. I always have to think on pairing each spirit I bring these days. We had a chef pair a $600 tequila with his menu at Christmastime. I'm not a tequila fan but it was incredible!

TheSpottedZebra · 29/01/2019 21:49

Fermenting stuff. We'll all be talking kefir, pickling and boasting about our gut biome.

And a few years out - eating insect protein. It'll be called land prawns or some such.

megcustard · 29/01/2019 21:51

Agree rum.

For interiors - botany and insects, victorian curiosity style.

MargotLovedTom1 · 29/01/2019 21:52

I thought poutine was a Canadian thing of cheesy chips and gravy?! Shows how with it I am.

DeRigueurMortis · 29/01/2019 21:57

Cocktails rather than wine.

So much more variety.

DeathMetalMum · 29/01/2019 21:57

Rum is my drink. So I'm 50/50 on rum being the next big thing. Places generally stock 3/4 different rums I like, Kracken, Appleton estate, Havana especial and Mount gay - are the norm. I did however go through a phase of drinking fruit cider - nice and refreshing in the summer. A few years back I could go into any supermarket and have a choice of 4/5 different ones I liked - not there's one which is OK because it's not currently 'in'. I hope rum being the next big thing doesn't mean it's impossible to buy nice rum in a few years.

Muddlingalongalone · 29/01/2019 21:59

MargotLovedTom1 me too - what is it then? Toddling off to Google...
