'Fire' has one syllable. Unless you're Arthur Brown.

Ok....I think I've convinced them that 'glowed' is 2. Now they are holding their fingers against their throats saying 'fi-er fi-er fi-er....'. They are trying to convince me In going mad. Bloody haiku homework. Bloody kids.

In my accent, glowed has one syllable but fire has two. Girl, arm and film also have two

We've been talking about syllables in class this week apparently if you put your fingers together and hold your hands flat Palm down under your chin when you say a word how many times your chin touches your hands is how many syllables the word has

I think in RP, or whatever it is called, they are both one.

Load is the analogy you need. In RP glowed is one syllable. Pronounced same as load (with a g...)

Fire pronounced correctly has one syllable.

I'm glad the throat thing that it is a recognised way of working out syllables and not some new way of 'flipping the bird'

Local Cardiff accent makes two syllables out of a lot of short one-syllable words:
school becomes skoo-el
cool is coo-el
