Is it 1?
It feels like it should be one....

Two for fire, one for glowed. Northern accent.

AdaColeman · 29/01/2019 20:31

One for glowed.
One for fire, because you count vowel sounds, and that final "e" is silent.

hazeyjane · 29/01/2019 20:33

Now fire sounds like the weirdest word in the world....fī(-ə)r apparently (what that means though is gobbledygook (4 syllables?)

Go to bed dear girls
My head is done in with your...
Homework. I want wine.

Thinking more about fire, I think it could be one or two syllables, depending how it was said.

DontCallMeBaby · 29/01/2019 21:22

/ˈfaɪə(r)/

That’s ‘fie’ (the ai bit is a diphthong that sounds like ‘I’) and then ‘uh’ (the upside down e being a schwa, that nondescript ‘uh’ vowel that features a lot in English). (r) for rhotic or non-rhotic accebts, r pronounced or not.

I can just about imagine a one syllable rhotic version with a long vowel sound - kind of want to call my SIL (Belfast) and get her to say fire to me now!

In my mash-up of an accent it’s two syllables.

Glowed I think only has two syllables if you’re doing a Shakespearean ‘glow-ed’ kind of thing.

For me:

Glowed - one (gload)

Fire - two (fi-ur).

Don’t care what “howmanysyllables.com” says, or what it is in RP.
