Do you feel well?

I've been wondering lately how other people feel In terms of wellness. On a normal day, when you're not ill with something specific, do you feel well?
I ask because it's dawned on me that I hardly ever do, and nor does my partner. Either he has a cough, or is really tired or had a headache. I often just feel a bit yuk. Hard to put my finger on anything specific but just don't feel good. Sometimes I have a belting headache or am extremely tired or obviously sometimes I'm unwell with something like a cold. I do occasionally have days when I feel well, but they stand out.
We're 50, both a bit over weight but not too much, moderately active, non smoking, social drinking.
I'd love to know if this is mostly peoples experience.

I feel well most of the time, I gave up alcohol and cigarettes 3.5 months ago , my diet is good and I take supplements. If I feel over tired or unwell I add in some high dose vitamin d and a liquid iron supplement.
I used to feel unwell a lot. Making those small changes has had a huge impact on me.

Applesaregreenandred · 28/01/2019 21:06

I'm similar age to you OP, also a little overweight, social drinker, small amount of exercise as in walking the dog round the block.

Most days I feel slightly tired, probably my own fault as I don't go to bed early enough and then DH is a restless sleeper, he wakes me, then I have to get up and go to toilet. Also get woken by DH getting up and going to bed different times due to shift work. If I stand for more than about half hour I get back ache. Normally got either a sore throat/ headache or toothache!

Every now and then I have a day where I do feel quite healthy, but yes, these days stand out.

It is possible my diet may be a bit deficient, have been eating mainly vegan but recently decided to add some dairy and fish back . I have done iron tablets but they tend to upset my stomach.

lovespaniels · 28/01/2019 21:07

NoSad I often feel really fatigued and have brain fog. Nausea and random pains aren't uncommon for me.

4point2fleet · 28/01/2019 21:08

I didn't feel well for ages. Came to a head round Christmas when I actually started to feel positively unwell.

I have:
Stopped drinking any alcohol
Gone gluten free
Started taking iron and magnesium

I feel WAY, WAY better. Feeling better has also made me much more cheerful.

Nest I need to cut down on carbs and do some exercise, but one thing at a time.

HolyMountain · 28/01/2019 21:09

I feel well, happy and fit the majority of the time, I rarely get colds or illness.

I’m 50.

Bigsighall · 28/01/2019 21:09

Mostly, I’m very lucky. I do exercise every day and am outside for a couple of hours a day so I think the fresh air helps. Quite often tired but a good tired iyswim... I’ve worn my body out and my brain is knackered from work

Malibucyprus · 28/01/2019 21:10

Nope, I wake up tired, even at weekends, after a good 10 hours sleep Blush I wake with a different ache each day. Pain in my arm one day, sore knee, sniffle, sore throat, the others, all gone within hours of being awake.

I’m 35 and some days feel 40 years older. I’m always tired.

theredjellybean · 28/01/2019 21:10

I feel well 99% of the time.
Yep tired a lot... But hey you know what life is tiring. What do we all expect.?
I work 6 days a week, commute between Cornwall and London, have 4 dds, elderly parents, two dogs etc.
I find that eating well but not too much, running five times a week and being in bed by 9pm most nights helps.
But I accept I have a busy life and will feel tired.
But ill... No I don't feel ill

Ollivander84 · 28/01/2019 21:11

Well mostly but tired constantly. I have a couple of autoimmune conditions, one which means I'm immunocompromised so I can't complain really! My weekly injections make me feel shit for 24hrs (headache, fever, bone pain, shaking, faint etc)

EnidButton · 28/01/2019 21:12

Fuck no. Went from walking 8 miles a day, yoga 3 times a week and dance classes to bedbound literally overnight. Improved a bit now but still at 30% max. It's utterly shit. ME/CFS apparently...

Never ignore warning signs. Rest when you need to instead of pushing through things. Look at lifestyle changes if you can improve it. None of that would've helped me but just to say never take health for granted. It can vanish in a heartbeat.

Rafabella · 28/01/2019 21:15

Do you hydrate enough OP? There's a great book - "You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty". Very telling. Unless there is something specifically wrong with you, at age 50, obvious culprits could be - Thirst (you absolutely do need around 2 litres of fluid a day / imbalanced hormones / gut imbalance (ie. review your diet). Also - not to scare you but, if relevant, check your house for carbon dioxide levels if relevant.

HavelockVetinari · 28/01/2019 21:17

I forgot to ask about your diet and weight - if you eat an unhealthy diet and/or are overweight that could be causing your symptoms too. As could deficiency in various vitamins/minerals. A blood test would be good, and you could see a nutritionist (an NHS registered one, not a crackpot who will tell you to cut out everything under the sun!)

onlyconnect · 28/01/2019 21:18

That is all very interesting! It seems people who feel generally well are in the minority.

My diet is pretty good I think. I look cooking so not much processed food and I'm lucky not to have a sweet tooth. I eat too much though- hence being over weight.

I would like to do more exercise. I go on a couple of decent walks a week plus a couple if smaller ones. My job isn't sedentary so I move around quite a bit. But yes, should look at doing more.

I do wonder if peri menopause has something to do with it too. But periods still going and very regular so not sure.

I feel crap if I don't do yoga at least 2 times a week and get out for a walk Daily.

Energy really does breed energy. And a decent nights sleep makes a huge difference.

As I get older (in my 50s) it takes much longer to recover from illnesses though.

Rafabella · 28/01/2019 21:18

@lovespaniels - get your hormone levels checked. Sounds like Peri to me. Addressing your hormone level if required will have a dramatic effect. X

Walnutwhipster · 28/01/2019 21:23

Today is a good day and I feel at peace and happy. I slept well, am not too tired and not in pain. The morphine is working and I am attached to my 'food' for the next twelve hours via a feeding line.

Do you feel well?
Mmmhmmokdear · 28/01/2019 21:24

I'm usually tired, but I feel well in myself and happy most of the time.

onlyconnect · 28/01/2019 21:25

Rafabella interesting what you say about hydration. I don't think I take in 2 l of liquid a day. More like 1.25 I'd say. I'll up that. I like drinking water so it shouldn't be a problem.

I do feel well daily.
When I was constipated I was feeling ugh and so bloated for a week.
I felt really good today due to 2 factors.
I rested well the weekend got a few bits done but I made sure I rested guilt free.
I got up earlier than usual and didn’t sit on social media first thing in the morning. My head felt fresh.

PenguinPandas · 28/01/2019 21:38

I used to feel well everyday apart from maybe couple of weeks a year when bugs and was very fit and active. Then became really ill for a year, only time felt well was with antibiotics otherwise felt like death all year and ended up in hospital a few times and endless cancer tests. Eventually took long term antibiotics and fine now, been fine since September. It's worth going to doctor for blood tests though took me a year before I got anywhere.

magimedi · 28/01/2019 21:48

Carbon monoxide poisoning? I would get a detector if I were you.

theredjellybean · 28/01/2019 21:52

@walnutwhipster..
Thank you for posting. And 💐 to you.
The general niggles posted by many here are mostly just life... Busy lifes, not enough sleep, poor diet, lack of exercise.

If you are really genuinely ill or have been in past you sure know the difference.

Wishing you well..

CatnissEverdene · 28/01/2019 21:54

I feel well most days, even with type 2 diabetes. I swear by regular exercise (we have two spaniels so there is no choice in the matter) and eating little and often. I'm also vegetarian and that helps, my diet must consist of 75% vegetables.

Having said that, I've felt headachey all day today.... convinced we are going to get snow tomorrow as it's a pressure type headache.

Walnutwhipster · 28/01/2019 22:00

@theredjellybean thank you. One day at a time. x

happypotamus · 28/01/2019 22:02

Well, I feel exhausted most of the time, my neck/ shoulders ache, and I have developed anxiety, but I don't consider myself to feel unwell.
Maybe that's because I know why I feel like I do. I have a physically and emotionally demanding, stressful job with 13hr day and night shifts that I never finish on time. I sometimes don't eat anything at work and don't drink enough. I don't get enough sleep because of the night shifts and I have a DC who wakes me up most nights. I often fall asleep in an uncomfortable chair waiting for her to go to sleep. I don't exercise, my diet isn't great. It's not surprising that I don't feel great.
