Would you tip the baker for this cake?

NC as pics will out me.

We have a small local bakery that does themed cakes to order. I ordered one for DD's 21st, it was £40 for a ten-inch round, themed on D&D - I left the details up to the baker.

She rang a week before pickup and asked if I'd mind it being rectangular as she'd had a better idea for the design. When I picked it up, it was on an 18" square board, the actual cake was 12"x9" and a two-layer sponge with buttercream so about 3-4" high.

It's so much bigger and better than I expected, and my friend (who makes cakes) said she'd probably expect to pay around £30 for the ingredients alone.

Would it be really weird to pop in and tip the baker a tenner?

Jeez you got an absolute steal there. I want to know if I'm local so I can order too! And YES, absolutely pay more if you can afford it.

RuskBaby · 28/01/2019 13:26

If you can afford it, I would. That is a lovely cake and will make their day to be thanked.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/01/2019 13:29

I would normally have said you agreed a price for the cake and so that is the price the baker is happy to receive, but that cake is ace and you haven't paid a huge amount. In those circumstances I would definitely consider a tip.

It would be a nice thing to do, plus give good reviews wherever you can online. (once you've tasted the cake and know it's not been made with salt instead of sugar or something!)

DeadCertain · 28/01/2019 13:31

I would tip a little extra and second the positive reviews being left online once you've tasted it.

Whisky2014 · 28/01/2019 13:32

That cake is awesome. Yeh id tip for that!

BertrandRussell · 28/01/2019 13:33

I’m a cake maker. She will have made a loss on that. The problem with publicising her work is that she might get lots of orders and make even bigger losses. Is she just a hobby baker?

Iamnobirdandnonetensnaresme · 28/01/2019 13:34

That’s way more than a £40 cake!!!

Cakedragon · 28/01/2019 13:34

I've already left ace reviews on her facebook page, and the cake was bloody lovely (DD's birthday was last week).

We sliced it up and reckon we got 40+ servings. DD wants to keep the dragon Smile

Bertrand she used to be a hobby baker, she opened a little shop a couple of years ago (we're in a VERY small rural town)

I would charge-and get- 80-100 quid for that cake. Ir’s what the market in my area will bear-there are places where it would be much more. As I said, she will be making a loss at £40, so unless she’s doing it for fun and not charging for her time.....

SoftSheen · 28/01/2019 13:51

I would expect to pay £85+ for a cake like that. Hours of work and it looks like she made a good job of it, too. At £40 I'd definitely tip her a tenner.

TokyoSushi · 28/01/2019 13:53

Oh wow, yes tip if you can - it's fabulous!

Reccy2018 · 28/01/2019 13:57

As lovely as it is to see a brilliant cake at a very reasonable price with a happy customer.... was hoping to see a monstrosity and a conversation about withholding a tip because the cake was a shit show!

TokyoSushi · 28/01/2019 13:59

 @Reccy2018 GrinGrinGrin me too!

BettyDuMonde · 28/01/2019 14:02

I thought this was going to be a ‘look at this shit cake, why did my partner tip the baker?’ thread 😂

But it’s a brilliant cake and i’m sure a tenner in a thank you card will be very much appreciated.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 28/01/2019 14:03

That's a beautiful cake, I'd definitely tip her!

SpoonBlender · 28/01/2019 14:04

That's superb! I'd definitely tip her another £20 for that and still think it was a great price.

Loyaultemelie · 28/01/2019 14:04

That's fantastic! Definitely tip

Batteriesallgone · 28/01/2019 14:07

I always tip creative people if I go ‘oh wow’ when I see the end result. I think 15-20% is a good tip. However in this case I’d be worried she’s made zero profit and doesn’t value her own time. I’d be tempted to give her £20 as a tip of that size might have her thinking people would pay increased prices. Which they should.

Smellyrose · 28/01/2019 14:08

Another one hoping for a bad cake thread Grin

Definitely tip the baker, it’s an amazing cake!

mummyhaschangedhername · 28/01/2019 14:08

Wow! That's incredible.

planespotting · 28/01/2019 14:10

A tip would be lovely, they obviously put a lot of effort in SmileSmileSmile

Bumblebeewine · 28/01/2019 14:14

Wow! Around here you'd be looking at £80+ for that! Amazing work and I'd tip £20 tbh but £10 is still kind and will make her day Smile

VanillaSugarr · 28/01/2019 14:15

Here you go - cake fails, because you wanted them
