Would you tip the baker for this cake?

NC as pics will out me.

We have a small local bakery that does themed cakes to order. I ordered one for DD's 21st, it was £40 for a ten-inch round, themed on D&D - I left the details up to the baker.

She rang a week before pickup and asked if I'd mind it being rectangular as she'd had a better idea for the design. When I picked it up, it was on an 18" square board, the actual cake was 12"x9" and a two-layer sponge with buttercream so about 3-4" high.

It's so much bigger and better than I expected, and my friend (who makes cakes) said she'd probably expect to pay around £30 for the ingredients alone.

Would it be really weird to pop in and tip the baker a tenner?

no jam! where is dm?

FortunesFave · 30/01/2019 06:13

Leave a review on Google for her and take her some flowers and share on social media. I wouldn't take money.

Presumably you’re not trying to make a living making cakes?

Yes, that's what a baker could do with...flowers Hmm

Useless

FortunesFave · 30/01/2019 06:55

Bertrand No but I am self employed and I'd be embarrassed if a client came back to me with more money. It's like giving her business advice.

Horses4 · 30/01/2019 06:57

Wow, I definitely would tip, that’s a bargain.

BertrandRussell · 30/01/2019 06:58

“It's like giving her business advice.”
She needs it!

If all the praise on SM people are suggesting gets her lots more business she will just be working even harder to lose more money!

hp2 · 30/01/2019 06:58

I think I would go with a big bunch of flowers rather than a monetary tip.

Whisky2014 · 30/01/2019 07:29

Why spend money on flowers when the baker woukd more than likely want the actual money. Ffs

DogMamma · 30/01/2019 07:37

I bake, and I would of charged you £100 for that. There are bigger companies that would charge more depending on the area they are. She has done a great job.
Deffo deserves a tip!

anniehm · 30/01/2019 07:53

Yes, fine to tip. It's the time rather than ingredient costs though. Amazing cake, dd is really into d&d and would love it for her 18th...

planespotting · 30/01/2019 08:00

@Cakedragon GrinGrin yummy!!!!!

BertrandRussell · 30/01/2019 08:10

Yep. When she sits down and works out how much money she’s lost making that cake I’m sure the flowers will be a great comfort!!

Jux · 30/01/2019 12:57

Oh that is AMAZING! Definitely worth much, much more than what you paid. Card with £20 in it would be really nice, I'm sure she'd appreciate it and tons and tons of praise on SM.

WHERE IS DM?????! I need to move house......Grin

(But really, where is it?)

MarshaBradyo · 30/01/2019 13:00

If you’re really happy say to her you could charge more and tip a £10 and leave a review

willowstar · 30/01/2019 14:10

Thanks cake dragon, I know where you mean😀

hp2 · 30/01/2019 14:15

Why so rude whiskey, a tip is an appreciation of gratitude. Giving a 50% tip? A nice big bunch of flowers and a gentle suggestion to charge more.

Whisky2014 · 30/01/2019 14:19

Because the money would be better use!

hp2 · 30/01/2019 14:27

But I am sure she will remember a gesture of a gift rather than cold hard cash. You have to look at your reasons for giving a tip .Is it to say thank you for an excellent job or to make you feel better as you feel you have underpaid??

Whisky2014 · 30/01/2019 14:37

If you think she undersold herself why would you choose to give flowers than money? Flowers won't pay the bills...
A tip is generally to show appreciation for a good job/quality product and that is a monetary gesture.
I don't know why youd prefer to give flowers. Flowers, flowers, flowers jeez. Great.

BertrandRussell · 30/01/2019 14:46

“But I am sure she will remember a gesture of a gift rather than cold hard cash”

I suspect you have never tried to make any sort of a living making stuff........

Batteriesallgone · 30/01/2019 14:55

I think I would go with a big bunch of flowers rather than a monetary tip.

This is the problem, so many people think women find nice gestures more important than cash. It’s why women frequently undercharge (being nice), and then instead of a tip, get flowers. The business is reduced to a hobby business and fields which are female dominated (baking, crafts) become chronically undervalued.

If you want to support local business, only cash will do that.

If you want to compliment someone personally flowers are fine. As long as you’re happy in the knowledge that flowers won’t pay business rates, and you’ve prioritised a personal compliment over supporting the actual business.

Yabbers · 30/01/2019 20:32

Is anyone else craving sponge cake with buttercream now?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/01/2019 09:21

The only ones that aren't Yabbers are the ones who have already succumbed and are stuffing themselves at this very moment!

Cakedragon · 01/02/2019 23:31

Just a quick update: I popped in today with a thank you card and £20. I said that lots of people had commented on the cake (but not that it was you lot Wink) She was quite shocked but full of smiles, and said she hoped I'd come back for more cakes!
