Would you tip the baker for this cake?

NC as pics will out me.

We have a small local bakery that does themed cakes to order. I ordered one for DD's 21st, it was £40 for a ten-inch round, themed on D&D - I left the details up to the baker.

She rang a week before pickup and asked if I'd mind it being rectangular as she'd had a better idea for the design. When I picked it up, it was on an 18" square board, the actual cake was 12"x9" and a two-layer sponge with buttercream so about 3-4" high.

It's so much bigger and better than I expected, and my friend (who makes cakes) said she'd probably expect to pay around £30 for the ingredients alone.

Would it be really weird to pop in and tip the baker a tenner?

Yes tip. If someone does a job that I think is worth more than they invoice me for, I generally do give them extra (in cash).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/01/2019 14:16

I'd give her an extra twenty quid and tell her she should be charging more, because, my word! she's worth !

Fabulous cake!

Lifeofsmiley · 28/01/2019 14:16

It looks amazing. How did it taste?

I’m still traumatised by a monstrosity I paid quite a substantial amount for 4 years ago

In this situation, yeah, i'd definitely give them more money.
It's awesome

TheOrigFV45 · 28/01/2019 14:17

Tip the baker? I'd be marrying him/her!

winsinbin · 28/01/2019 14:17

I think a personal thank you card from your daugher would be even more appreciated than a tip. It’s a lovely cake.

planespotting · 28/01/2019 14:19

@TheOrigFV45 steady now Wink

81Byerley · 28/01/2019 14:21

Definitely do it! Make her day!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/01/2019 14:25

Bloody hell! Yes!

Tell her she neds to raise her prices or she wll go out of business!

That's one truly handsome cake Smile

CircleofWillis · 28/01/2019 14:27

Winsinbin that would be true if the baker had been a relative but I think a professional would appreciate both the card and the fact that you can see the monetary value of her effort.

Cakedragon · 28/01/2019 14:27

TheOrigFV45 I think my DH might not be too impressed Wink

A thank you card is a nice idea, I'll do that. And £20 does seem more appropriate, now I think about it.

(slightly embarrassed as I had to literally scramble for change to pay for it when I picked it up, I realised I hadn't been to the bank and they don't have a card machine - I was going to pop to the ATM but just managed to find enough in pound coins and 50p's!)

ooh great cake!!I'd definitely tip extra for that.

sugarbum · 28/01/2019 14:43

where do you live @cakedragon. I want a cake now!

Lovemusic33 · 28/01/2019 14:43

I would tip. I make cakes but had to stop selling them as people didn’t want to pay enough. Something like this would have cost quite a bit to make and taken many hours work. Most cake makers would charge double what you paid but on the other hand you were quoted a price? I would maybe give a extra £10.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/01/2019 14:47

themed on D&D - I left the details up to the baker.

She could've read that a bit quick and thought you wanted Danny Dyer rather than Dundeons&Dragons................................oh , wait , you did want Danny Dyer ............... Wink

namechangedforanon · 28/01/2019 14:56

That is a FANTASTIC cake ! I'd overpay and tell her she isn't charging enough.

Shadow1234 · 28/01/2019 14:58

I have used a regular cake lady for birthday/Anniversary etc, for about 5 years now, and I would expect to pay about £80-£85 for that cake. She has done an awesome job, so agree, £20 extra would be a nice gesture.
Even at £60 it's a bargain!

shutuppeppa · 28/01/2019 15:21

I never tip... but I would for that

BertrandRussell · 28/01/2019 15:43

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 29/01/2019 00:12

Too late, Planespotting, the cake has all gone!

That cake is bloody amazing - I agree you got an absolute bargain and I'm glad you've decided to give her an extra £20, even at £60 it's still a bargain, especially if the cake was lovely too!

What a star she is.

Cakedragon · 29/01/2019 14:42

@Planespotting just for you. Bang goes the diet. I hope you're proud of yourself Hmm Wink

I used to make cakes for people. That cake is great and she will be thrilled if you leave a tip. I was delighted when I got extra once. Most said the cake was amazing but never gave me more money. I upped my prices in line with a local shop because I wasn’t charging enough for my time. It seems to have gone quiet now but I am not really bothered I have enough to do. Sometimes I was up till 1am completing them.
It would be lovely if you wrote a card.
