To be craving a fray bentos pie?

I'm definitely not pregnant!

I've been reading about people prepping for brexit, and someone mentioned fray bentos pies. I've not had one for probably at least 30 years, but I remember loving the crispy top of the pastry with the slightly soggy bit underneath.

Would I be disappointed, or should I try one for old times sake? I think it probably won't live up to my expectations if I'm honest..

I often think this when i see them on the shelves in home bargains.

I preferred the steak and kidney puddings though

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 26/01/2019 16:12

The Just Chicken one is divine!!

Aquiver · 26/01/2019 16:13

Don't do it. My DH and I tried one a few months ago, for nostalgia's sake, and it was absolutely vile.

Even the cat (who has eaten some pretty awful things, including his own soupy diarrhoea after a case of the runs) turned his nose up when offered a bit of meat pie filling Envy BOAK!

Should say, we tried the Steak and Kidney one. The others might be nicer (well, they can't be any worse than the one we had!).

GottenGottenGotten · 26/01/2019 16:17

They don't have the just chicken one at my local Tesco (just checked on the app), and to be honest they're isn't a lot of choice around here as to where to shop. (no home bargains unfortunately). I have a choice of just steak or steak and kidney.

But I'm city-bound in about a month... Might have to go on a chicken pie hunt Grin

They are still as yummy as they always were, we often have them.

cantfindname · 26/01/2019 16:35

I really not keen on them, but I have a problem. I really really want a Fray Bentos tin to cook yorkshire pud in. First world problem eh?

GottenGottenGotten · 26/01/2019 16:37

Haha, if I succumb to temptation, I'll send you the tin!

Glad to find it's not a completely ridiculous thing to want though!

I've got two in the cupboard Grin I like them!

Rogueaccountant · 26/01/2019 16:46

They’re still good, but probably smaller than you remember.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 26/01/2019 16:58

DH and I recently cleared out FiLs cupboards and found one. Grown up DS came home unexpectedly and needed feeding so I bunged the pie in the oven. DS was quite impressed and scoffed it down.

I can't believe that 20 odd years ago DH, myself and toddler DS used to share one, with chips and peas.

donajimena · 26/01/2019 17:00

I think they are bloody lovely. I like the steak ones (not kidney). Best served with marrowfat peas and boiled new potatoes.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 26/01/2019 17:04

I bought a few for the food bank recently. Ichucked one in my trolley for nostalgia’s sake, a steak one. It did suck me down a time tunnel to childhood.

isseywithcats · 26/01/2019 17:05

i still like fray bentos steak and kidney pies, the crispy weird pastry on the top, unique gravy but im sure there was more steak chunks in them when i was a kid

SneakyGremlins · 26/01/2019 17:11

One left now, thanks for the dinner idea OP!

I'd never heard of one. I sometimes fancy a corned beef hash, but DH refuses to try corned beef. His mum never fed him corned beef as a child, and he thinks it'll be disgusting.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/01/2019 17:21

My clearly insane children consider them a treat Hmm Ive let them go with it, because sometimes I really can't be arsed and a pie selection cheers them right up 😂

BitOutOfPractice · 26/01/2019 17:22

Someone bought my dd one when she went to uni which I thought was genius. She loves a pie but she said it was rank

Littlebird88 · 26/01/2019 17:24

don't do it!
leave the memories as they were.

Buntybearbess · 26/01/2019 17:34

I love the steak and the steak and kidney ones Grin some mash and some peas and carrots and I'm a happy Bunty.

GottenGottenGotten · 26/01/2019 18:34

So many conflicting thoughts on here!

I have to say HairyToity, I'm with your dh on the topic of corned beef. Never was a fan. Sorry!

I’ve never tried one but there’s on in my cupboard.
Feeling scared now lol

Ifangyow · 26/01/2019 18:48

I had a minced beef one on Thursday morning when I got home from work with some mashed potato that was left over from the day before.
It was lovely.😋

gentlyscented · 26/01/2019 18:51

I love em 😋

GottenGottenGotten · 26/01/2019 19:27

I may (after a bit of a struggle with my tin opener, it has to be said) have a just steak fray bentos pie in the oven..
