To be craving a fray bentos pie?

I'm definitely not pregnant!

I've been reading about people prepping for brexit, and someone mentioned fray bentos pies. I've not had one for probably at least 30 years, but I remember loving the crispy top of the pastry with the slightly soggy bit underneath.

Would I be disappointed, or should I try one for old times sake? I think it probably won't live up to my expectations if I'm honest..

Wait until there’s nothing else in your cupboard, you’ll appreciate it more.
Having said that, they’re OK.

Ooh you must give us your verdict.

Our Poundland has them in at the moment... It's gotta be worth a pound to satisfy a curiosity moment :)

The verdict is in!

So - the pastry was just as I remember it. I still love it!

However.. The filling was mostly gravy, and had an unusual flavour. Edible, but I didn't love it.

I'll definitely try the chicken version if I come across it though!

Me too...I had one a little while ago and it wasn't as nice as I remembered, particularly the filling. I don't know if that's because the recipe has changed or just that I've got used to better quality food.

I gave one to my dc's a few years ago. They begged me to never give them one again.
Still use the words bentos pies if they are being a pain Grin

HearMeSnore · 26/01/2019 20:25

I still love them, but only the steak and kidney ones. I'm finding it very hard to find steak and kidney pies that actually have recognisable pieces of kidney in...and these do.

I'd prefer one of these over a pukka pie any day.

SneakyGremlins · 26/01/2019 20:25

Can I shamefully admit I don't eat the lid?

I don't like pastry Sad I eat the filling and bottom/sides of the pie though.

Corneliawildthing · 26/01/2019 20:25

My OH used to work in the factory that makes Fray Bentos pies. Suffice to say, we never buy them!

jessstan2 · 26/01/2019 20:31

I generally don't like meat pies (except pasties) but was thinking of a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pudding just the other day! I'd pick all the kidney and most of the meat out but eat the suet pudding and gravy.
I'm not pregnant either (would be a miracle if I was at my age).

borntobequiet · 26/01/2019 20:41

I’ve always thought Pukka pies an unfortunate name.

Corneliawildthing · 26/01/2019 20:59

I always thought pukka meant proper. I've never heard any other meaning for it

Ifangyow · 26/01/2019 21:04

I'm glad you didn't eat the lid @SneakyGremlins. It would have played havoc with your teeth and would have given you terrible indigestion, not to mention a trip to casualty.

Oh, you mean the pie lid?

Er, do carry on.

Oh I bloody love Fray Bentos pies, the steak ones.
The soggy pastry is the best bit, my teenager is quite horrified.

Brahumbug · 27/01/2019 05:06

The steak and kidney puddings are divineSmile

sashh · 27/01/2019 06:12

I too have a couple in the fridge.
