year 11 prom - what do boys wear?

So, just sent in the deposit to the year 11 prom. No idea what boys wear. Is it normally balck tie? In that case do they wear a proper dinner jacket and trousers?

I was wondering if it is worth buying ds a dinner jacket, as by the time he has hired one for this and then for a couple of university balls, surely it would be better to buy. But I have NO IDEA what boys wear to this stuff, or if I am hopelessly out of date.

ds is quite cool and style conscious, but this is also out of our experience, so not sure exactly how to play it (maybe he needs to shop with one of his friends) He is FSM student at superselective grammar, we come from working class town, and he travels on the train to naice middle class grammar school town!

It depends on the school. Our local paper usually has prom pics from local schools. Why don't you look at those to see what they wore last year? Or maybe the school website. Or get your DS to ask around.

DS's school - 99% of the boys just wore normal suits - almost all of them seem to opt for the same blue suit from M&S plus a red tie.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/01/2019 13:15

If possible I'd try to see if they have any photos of previous events. At DSs there was real mixture but most boys went for skinny fit 3 piece suits, a lot of blue or burgundy, worn with brown shoes and belt. Some wore DJs and some kilts. A few also had coloured velvet dinner jackets.

Knowivedonewrong · 25/01/2019 13:18

My DS wore a nice suit in blue.

I'd love ds in kilt, he has scottish heritage, is 6'3" and has red hair. he would look amazing.

Ok, I'll see if I can find some photos.
trouble with him asking friends is they will all be waiting to see what the others are wearing!

At dd's they wore suits. Some were fairly plain, some were rather flamboyant. One lad said he might wear a dress but opted for a rather snazzy suit combo instead.

AutumnColours9 · 25/01/2019 15:22

90 percent wore suits from next
Blue grey or black

Comefromaway · 25/01/2019 15:23

ONe lad did wear a DJ but he's the type that wears sharp suits with matching pastel colour tie and handkerchief on non uniform days at school.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 25/01/2019 15:23

Ds got a shirt /jacket +trousers from H & M for less than £100!!

LoniceraJaponica · 25/01/2019 15:26

In the prom pictures in our local paper most boys wore a suit. Some had a DJ and trousers. No-one wore jeans or casual clothes.

dd aged 13, has already picked out the 3 peice suit shirt and tie she wants ot wear to her prom, all in shades of darke greeny blue. Probably cheaper than a dress actually, just she is a bit curvy for a men's suit!

This is sounding good, he will need a suit anyway, for interviews and things, so this might be the moment to get it.

Anyone else got a tall ds? Do next etc sell ling enough for 6'3"?

I know NOTHING about men's clothes, and dh is worse!

ONe of the girls at dd's school wore dress trousers and a jacket with a crop top. She looked fantastic. Dresses just were not her and she dressed to her own style.

steppemum · 25/01/2019 15:43

well that was easy, googled the school name and prom and got dozens of photos from the local press.
For some reason would not have expected that!

The boys are all in suits, mostly black, some blue, mostly look like 'day' suits. Ties of every colour. One or two DJs and bow ties.

Perfect. Now we just have to find one long enough for him.

Happy Suit Hunting!

(Groans at the thought this will me me with ds this time next year)

steppemum · 25/01/2019 15:48

I'm quite pleased actually. I had promised him we would get a DJ if necessary, but I am already a bit panicked about sixth form clothing, a whole wardrobe of shirts and proper trousers. His T shirts and jeans will not do!
So, gettind a decent suit will be a much better investment.

That’s one issue we won’t have. School 6th form is black trousers, white shirt, 6th form tie, no blazer or 6th Form college is wear whatever you want.

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/01/2019 15:58

I live next door to a secondary school and I've seen boys attending prom in all sorts of outfits - modern suits, retro outfits, kilts and other ethnic outfits.

steppemum · 25/01/2019 15:59

This is school sixth form, he has to wear a shirt with collar and no jeans, but at least it isn't 'business wear' which is the most annoying sixth form uniform there is.

Next has a big and tall range. DH is 6' 5" and has a couple of Next slimfit suits for special occasions.

Crazzzycat · 25/01/2019 16:04

I suggest having a look on e-bay, which is where many of these prom suits end up after being worn only once.

I got DS1 a beautiful quality suit for £10, DS2’s was “expensive” at £17 and DS3 reused DS1’s suit! The trick is to look in January/ February, before the wedding season starts.

Even though these kids have usually stopped growing vertically, they will still change their shape between 16-18, so these suits often don’t get much use at all.

Shantotto · 25/01/2019 16:06

You could try ASOS they have a tall range and could probably targetyed to a fairly young audience?

starfleet · 25/01/2019 16:12

Next clearance section on their website may be your friend here. Lots of suits and DJ's, Velvet tux jackets etc.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/01/2019 16:18

Ds1 is also 6'3. We got his suit in slaters. He got the long length but they let down the sleeves and trousers for free as it was still a touch short.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 25/01/2019 16:20

DS wore a blue suit, his dad's regimental tie, and brown brogues.

NewGrandad · 25/01/2019 16:20

I would go with the kilt but then I'm in Scotland so there would probably be a few others.
