year 11 prom - what do boys wear?

So, just sent in the deposit to the year 11 prom. No idea what boys wear. Is it normally balck tie? In that case do they wear a proper dinner jacket and trousers?

I was wondering if it is worth buying ds a dinner jacket, as by the time he has hired one for this and then for a couple of university balls, surely it would be better to buy. But I have NO IDEA what boys wear to this stuff, or if I am hopelessly out of date.

ds is quite cool and style conscious, but this is also out of our experience, so not sure exactly how to play it (maybe he needs to shop with one of his friends) He is FSM student at superselective grammar, we come from working class town, and he travels on the train to naice middle class grammar school town!

Ours all went for the skinny fit prom range from Moss Bros. Prom offer was a free shirt.

Yulebealrite · 25/01/2019 16:25

Oh and most of them were a shade of blue worn with brown brogues.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 25/01/2019 16:25

Now all you have to worry about is the transport to the prom. Grin

My DS had a lovely suit from Next .... he wore it once & now it’s too small Grin must be a second hand market for these sorts of outfits?

Parker231 · 25/01/2019 16:27

DS’s was black tie. He hired it as he was going through a final growth spurt and I didn’t want to buy something which wouldn’t fit in a month or twos time.

Ragwort · 25/01/2019 16:28

Agree ... the blue suit with (Dad’s) brown shoes is a very popular look.

budgetneeded · 25/01/2019 16:30

Both my sons rented their suits, including shoes.
They both continued to grow, so buying one would have been wasted money in 24 months time.

steppemum · 25/01/2019 16:31

I really don't think ds would wear a kilt, but it would suit him (ha ha)
His girlfriend is blakc and gorgeous, can you imagine how striking they would be!

I didn't know Next had a tall section. Ds has never shopped there, and I'm thinking it might be a good addition to his (limited) clothes shop choices!

Do they really keep growing Shock

he is 6'3"!! he doesn't need to get any taller!
Mind you the shoes are going to be our biggest problem, he is size 13.

I do hate blue suits, but it will be down to him.

Transport to prom is going to be a compromise. We live miles away from the prom, so it may be parental transport!

6’1 at prom, 6’3, 18months later, and much broader shoulders. Arms and legs more thick.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/01/2019 17:16

My DS stopped at 6'3. Well he's now 18 and we've assumed he's stopped...

Ivory200 · 25/01/2019 17:23

I have a 6 4 son, he got 6th form suits at John Lewis, the washable ones. We bought one jacket and 2 trousers, as the nether garments were on him all day, and the jacket mostly on the back of a chair in lessons. They come in navy, black and grey. Quality wise, they lasted the full two years, the jacket ended up a bit shiny on the elbows, but the trousers are still in use now, and he's 24. So good value!!

FatandSassy · 25/01/2019 17:42

The school usually let you know if there's a theme. Both my older boys chose their own suits for prom and we bought them. Once wore a royal blue slim fitting suit, the other a navy blue, couple of years apart. ImE it tends to be the girls who worry more about what they wear, boys just like a nice suit and to look smart. Smile

JoeMaplin · 25/01/2019 21:20

Ds wore a slim fit light grey next suit with a white shirt and maroon tie. Nearly all the boys wore lounge suits. Don't spend too much, I bet he'll grow a bit more. DS filled out from 16 to 18, broader shoulders egg plus grew another inch or two. This year I've got Dd1s, now that is a whole new kettle of fish!!

Cherrymix · 26/01/2019 18:34

M&S do mix and match jackets and trousers in various lengths. We got a washable suit. Cost less than £100. Used for a couple of weddings and some work exp interview.

Most expensive thing was the shoes but hopefully his feet have stopped growing.

SneakyGremlins · 26/01/2019 18:36

I wore a regatta tracksuit

year 11 prom - what do boys wear?
Fluffyears · 27/01/2019 17:09

A kilt always looks good and can be just hired for the night. You might need to practice getting into it. For our wedding I had to dress DH 😱

lakersgirl · 20/03/2020 14:09

We rented a tux for my son. It was expensive though

Presume this question now irrelevant as we will probably all still be in lockdown until September.....

MulticolourMophead · 20/03/2020 18:15

DS's school has said they'll postpone not cancel prom.

So once we have an idea when it'll be, I'll get him a suit (or more like ask my Dbro, as he's good at suit buying). Most lads seem to wear standard suits, sometimes with a waistcoat. Not much call for a tux here.
