Is this chicken pox? Just appeared while DD's been at school. She doesn't seem unwell and is not scratching.

There are about 12 spots/blisters at the moment. The one I've taken a picture of is the biggest one. Looks ready to burst!

Yep, looks like it.

PFB1 · 24/01/2019 16:16

If she isn't unwell yet, is this a good sign?

I did notice one little spot last night but thought nothing or it.

Almost certainly! Both of mine just had it so the images are fresh in my mind!

She might not get unwell. Fingers crossed. One of mine had hundreds of spots and was quite poorly. The other had only a handful and was neither up nor down.

Haworthia · 24/01/2019 16:21

In my experience (two kids with pox two weeks apart) they don’t feel unwell in the early stages when spots start appearing. But days 3-5 were pretty rough. My older child tolerated it a lot better than the toddler. I don’t know why people always say it’s best they catch it young. At least you can reason with an older child about not scratching, etc.

DowntonCrabby · 24/01/2019 16:26

Yep I’d say so. DS has it currently, 3 spots on his back on tues night and about 300 all over today.
DD has it and was very unwell, DS other than the spots and itching is his usual busy/chatty self. We’re using calpol/piriton and virasoothe which all seem to be helping.

Hope your DD is over it quickly without feeling too unwell Flowers

DowntonCrabby · 24/01/2019 16:26

DD *had it

We are currently in poxland! 3 year old came out in spots on 8th jan. He had a smattering, no unwell periods or scratching at all. His 6 year old brother came out in them on 19th jan, he was fine until day 3 when we had 24 hours of hell, screaming, itching, hysterical. It settled within 24 hours, using Piriton, calpol and poxclin. His spots were (are) far worse than his younger siblings, and mostly concentrated in his groin and armpits, which is where thr pain and itching were.
Today, their just turned 2 year old "stepsister" came out in them. Time will tell what experience hers will be!
But yes, the above looks like pox, and look similar to how my milder case 3 year old presented.

MitziK · 24/01/2019 16:36

Yep. 'Tis The Pox.

Time to stay off school until the last one has crusted over (and notify them - it's very dangerous for pregnant women and their babies to catch it.)

ThisMustBeMyDream · 24/01/2019 16:37

3 year old pox...

ThisMustBeMyDream · 24/01/2019 16:40

My 6 year old Sad

Jackshouse · 24/01/2019 16:41

I would say yes.

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2019 16:46

Mine were never unwell with it. Though DC3 was at first diagnosed with chicken pox. It ended up he had coxsackie virus (he was initially fine, just blistering on back and torso). So keep an open mind. He was incredibly ill with it after an initial period of being seemingly fine.

FlumpyMummy · 24/01/2019 17:24

Yep!

PFB1 · 24/01/2019 22:06

Thanks all... more have come up. She seems okay so far though.

Should most the spots be out by tomorrow?

OP posts:
Haworthia · 24/01/2019 22:11

No, they come in waves. You’ll get one batch appear, then a short lull and more will come out by day 3 or so.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 24/01/2019 22:52

All were out by day 3 in both my boys.

scottishma · 24/01/2019 22:54

Yes that's definitely the pox! My 4 year old is on day 6 today and just returned to nursery as they have crusted over. he was totally fine with it! No serious itching but the cabin fever was unreal! Just waiting on the 9 month old getting in now Sad

PFB1 · 24/01/2019 22:58

Wow, back at nursery on day 6... that's fast!

My next question was, how long is it likely I'll need to keep her off for? I know they say until all the spots have scanned over, but in reality when is that likely to be? I'm a SAHM so no concerns with needing time off work. Phew 😅

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 24/01/2019 23:03

I reckon back a week Monday.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 24/01/2019 23:34

I followed NHS guidance, and checked with school. Pox came out on a monday, he was back the following monday.
My 6 year old came out on saturday, if he is well enough, he will go back monday, although as his have been worse, I'm not as confident in how he will cope yet. Will decide sunday night I guess.

More spots today. Doesn't seem too bad for day 2 though?
