Genuine question!..,, How much do you fart?!

I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with me, or my diet!

I seem to (or it feels like) I just need to fart ALL the time!..... Like for most of the day I feel them coming and then I am holding them in.

I have a fairly normal balanced diet, don’t eat much junk, maybe a choc bar or packet of crisps once or twice a week. Bread maybe once a fortnight. Don’t eat ready meals. Take out maybe once a couple of months.

Is farting regularly through the day normal?

Perhaps at night when I sleep

TipseyTorvey · 24/01/2019 06:44

Loads if I eat any wheat at all. Hardly ever if I stick to my no wheat, no sugar normal diet. Fell off the wagon badly at Christmas and felt horribly bloated and windy. Could you try a food diary and eliminate certain foods one by one for a week perhaps and see what your gut is upset about?

Claredogmum · 24/01/2019 06:45

Following a keto diet stopped my farting totally. I seem to be gas free now.

Oh @Impicciona and @Claredogmum me too! I've been doing keto since November and the second biggest 'loss' apart from weight, is gas 😂. No more trumping!! It's been a revelation 😁 Hardly a part these days 🤷‍♀️ My family are much relieved I have to say...I strongly suspect I have/had some sort of intolerance that eating keto has sorted out.

chaffymcchaff · 24/01/2019 07:05

'Parp' not 'part'

rightreckoner · 24/01/2019 07:09

Never. Honestly. Until Christmas and something has gone wrong since then. Now it’s not so much farting as my bowel constantly grumbling. Having investigations.

AnotherPidgey · 24/01/2019 07:14

Other than trumpeting in the morning just now, a hell of a lot less than I used to.

Triggers for me:
Soya (so I have to be very selevtive about bread
Sugar, also includes alcohol. (Gin not so bad, wine is awful)
Onions (plus it stinks)
Dairy (can cope with a little high fat e.g. real butter, small portions of cheese but exceeding my tolerance has unpleasant explosive consequences)

I always was a lightweight, but my digestive system is my biggest barier to having more than the occasional tipple.

NameChange176 · 24/01/2019 07:15

Look into the fodmap diet. That encompasses the major causes of problems for most people, BUT not everyone will have a problem with everything so whilst it’s useful to try eliminating fodmap foods, it’s also important to reintroduce what you can in a controlled manner so you identify your triggers.
I personally have problems with onions, garlics, some fruits and lactose, but can eat grains and beans (also common triggers) until the cows come home without producing any gas. Different things in my problem list affect me to different degrees, so I don’t completely eliminate some of my triggers I just restrict them to amounts I can cope with, that way I still continue to get a balanced diet and it’s not too onerous/ difficult socially/boring.

Alienspaceship · 24/01/2019 07:16

It used to be all day long. But low carbing has stoped all that. I can’t recommend it enough.

EvaHarknessRose · 24/01/2019 07:52

I agree its the grains and some of the veg too - any lentils or beans in your diet?

BeeMyBaby · 24/01/2019 09:40

No idea if it's been said already but you said you eat Mediterranean veggies- might this include beans and chickpeas? Both known to cause awful wind in some people, my brother in law won't touch chickpeas and I avoid all beans due to wind and agonising trapped wind if we eat them. Normally fart just a few times a day so can just do it in the toilet whilst I wee.

I have to take Metformin.

I'm an eternal wind machine and it's hideously embarrassing at times.

Thanks, lots to think about and look at.

I don’t eat chickpeas, lentils or beans often. I do eat onions and garlic though.

@CatnissEverdene I fart a million times a day and take metformin...is that related?!

CatnissEverdene · 24/01/2019 18:25

Thunder yes it's a well documented side effect. There have been quite a few amusing threads about it on here!!

CheeseAndOnonIceCream · 24/01/2019 19:00

Saw your thread title and couldn't resist having a look!
I can have days where it's non stop parping, but other days without so much as a murmur! I don't vary my diet dramatically from day to day,so I don't really know why this is. All I DO know,is that if I eat too many Brussels sprouts, baked beans or fried onions,I can't stop farting the next day.

retainertrainer · 24/01/2019 19:11

I fart loads (IBD). To the point where I felt disgusting as I was constantly stinking the whole house out.

Just for anyone who might be struggling. I discovered ‘shreddies’ not the cereal (that definitely wouldn’t help!). They’re pants with a carbon filter. Expensive at £20 a pop (that’s £20 each pair not £20 each time you let rip). I wear mine over my normal knickers so I don’t have to wash them every day. They’ve given me some confidence back. I wouldn’t go around farting willy-billy now but it’s just nice not to stink!

BigMandy · 24/01/2019 19:23

At last a quiche I can join. piss of Daily Mail Yes I fart a lot. Worse when my diet is poor and I have started sleeping with a window open despite the cold because I was worried of the smell becoming ingrained!

abbsisspartacus · 24/01/2019 19:28

Yes and when I first got my kittens one used to sneak into the bed with me he has stopped now after sinking his teeth into my butt when it lets fly in my sleep

Bettydaviseyes · 24/01/2019 19:28

I fart a lot if I eat anything with gluten in it. Since I've cut it out I don't fart.

justasking111 · 24/01/2019 19:39

Friend had bad stomach problems, cameras up and down. Consultant said to cut out gluten, coffee, fatty foods. Bingo stomach better and no more foul wind. It is caused by stress in their job though.

artisanscotcheggs · 24/01/2019 21:26

I am very musical. 🎶🎶🎶

DaisyDreaming · 24/01/2019 21:33

I fart once every few days and then once a month or so fart a lot! It means a big belly and lots of burps!
