5 a day

Who regularly gets theirs?
Considering I am vegan I get mine ridiculously infrequently. Who manages and who is a bit crap like me Blush

I do, but mostly veg not fruit.
Some countries say 10 a day, I would struggle to eat that I think!

Strokethefurrywall · 23/01/2019 20:05

I do but I'm quasi-vegan so pretty much all my meals are salads and/or roasted vegetables.

WonderWoman2019 · 23/01/2019 20:09

I do. Today: apple, pineapple, banana, tangerine, raisins, tomatoes, onion, carrot, sweetcorn, runner beans and (legumes are counted for 5 a day purposes) chickpeas. That's 11.

Aquilla · 23/01/2019 20:14

I'm not sure sweet corn counts? But that's being very petty!
In Japan it's ten a day - you're right.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/01/2019 20:17

I haven’t today because I’m ill and on comfort food but I generally get more than 5. It should be 8-10 a day really, but they knew people wouldnt go for it. 5 is meant to be attainable.

Cuppateeee · 23/01/2019 20:19

I get lots of veg in my meals but unless you’re having an 80g portion of each item then it can’t count as a whole one, though I try to kid myself Otherwise some days I’m sure the only fruit and veg I’d eat is the tomatoes out of ketchup ☺️

InDubiousBattle · 23/01/2019 20:31

I reckon I did today, but I often don't. So today I've had;

  • an apple- 0.5 portion (it was one of those little ones)
  • jacket potato with tuna and sweetcorn and a small salad- 1.5 maybe
  • veg tacos- onion, pepper, mixed beans, tomatoes, tiny sprinkling of lettuce. Another 2.5 perhaps?

We're trying to eat far less meat so that should help. I don't think I'd want to eat enough to get to 10 a day.

AdaColeman · 23/01/2019 20:37

Don't worry about it.

The five-a-day thing has no scientific basis, it was just a handy memorable number that someone came up with, as a snappy slogan.
Just eat a balanced diet, and you will be fine.

carrie74 · 23/01/2019 21:05

Usually manage it, but what I (very loosely) aim for is just a wide variety of fruit and veg and different colours.

So today:
Blueberries with my muesli
Sugar snap peas, Pak Choi and baby sweet corn (Thai curry leftovers for lunch)
Broccoli, courgettes, kale (taking up approx 1/3 of dinner plate)
2 satsumas for snack.

So total of 8 different types today, and about 5 portions in total I'd say. I'd normally manage 8-12 different fruits/veg per day.

crimsonhair · 24/01/2019 00:11

I think it's more important to try to get 25g of fibre in your diet in any day. This will take care of up to 10 portions of truit or veg a day.

Endofrelationship · 24/01/2019 06:58

I very rarely live get it. Usually 3-4, almost exclusively with my evening meal. I need to get better.

SilverDoe · 24/01/2019 07:04

I don’t monitor 5 a day, I do aim to get at least 800g of fruit and veg a day though which is my version of it. So it’s less healthy because I could eat maybe only 3 - 4 different types of fruit and veg, but I’ll have big servings of them so I’m getting a lot of fibre and the like. So for example I might have 400g of cauliflower for lunch, and 2 100g apples and 2 100g bananas in a day.

Perhaps not a deal, but much more manageable and affordable for me. I’m on a high fibre diet though so this a a fairly recent eating plan. Feel lots better though!

SilverDoe · 24/01/2019 07:05

And also forgot to say 800g is double the amount of fruit and veg 5 a day suggests, there must be some benefit to that, surely Confused

autumngold6 · 24/01/2019 07:19

Yes, five seems quite low to me now. Have been following a healthy eating plan now for three years and average about 10 a day, sometimes more. As I've cut out the unhealthy items I've had to fill up on fruit and vegetables.

Drogosnextwife · 24/01/2019 07:42

I have about 1 or 2 a day Blush

lastqueenofscotland · 24/01/2019 07:58

My evening meals are packed with veg it’s my day time meals that tend to be pitta and hummous or similar as I’m often in a rush at work

ILiveInSalemsLot · 24/01/2019 08:07

I’m up and down a lot. There are some days where I make an effort to have mostly fruit and veg that day and some days where I’ll have hardly any.
I can really tell the difference in how I feel especially after a few days of doing the same thing.

Kikipost · 24/01/2019 08:13

Average
Three apples
Punnet of blueberries
Half punnet of raspberries
Portion of broccoli
Portion of cauliflower
Portion of courgette
Large salad at lunch

Love fruit and veg

AlexaShutUp · 24/01/2019 08:21

I get mine, but only because I make a huge effort. I used to find it very difficult.

For me, I think the key has been to try and get a couple of portions in with each meal, whereas I used to maybe have a piece of fruit at lunchtime and then rely on dinnertime to get the rest. It does mean I have to invest some time in the mornings to make a big salad for lunch or whatever, but at least I'm now getting them in.

I tend to have way more than five types of different fruit and veg each day, but they're not all big enough to count as whole portions iyswim, so I quite often count a few things as one portion.

Snacking on carrots/fruit/dried fruit is also a good way to add in extra through the day.

Jackshouse · 24/01/2019 08:22

It would be a very rare day that I would not get my 5 a day. I aim for 5 veg and 3 fruit.

Since having DD it’s much better because I have to give her a balanced diet. I am the Mum who serves veg with beans on toast.

I’m trying to work on variety through the week. I read something recently that said we should have 30 different sources of fiber a week but that included all plant based food so nuts, seeds and oats.

hanahsaunt · 24/01/2019 13:09

I do and it's not a chore. Most days I have:

Breakfast: 80g of mixed berries (Sainsbury's frozen) with a large pear with a dessert spoon each of mixed seeds and flaked almonds and a slightly larger spoon of natural yogurt

Lunch: large bowl of homemade vegetable soup; decent sized apple and banana

Dinner: there are usually at least two decent servings of veg per person within whatever I make; last night was curry which included onion, kale, peppers and chickpeas

It's not difficult ...

morningconstitutional2017 · 24/01/2019 13:21

I get 10 a day but it didn't guarantee either myself or DH good health. Some illnesses are just bad luck, I'm afraid despite our best efforts.

DavetheCat2001 · 24/01/2019 13:35

Today I've had so far:

Blueberries (frozen)
Strawberries (frozen)
Soup with: Celery. onion, mushroom, pepper, courgette, potato (prob doesn't count tho?)
Tonight will have broccoli and cabbage with dinner

So 9 not counting the potato.

floribunda18 · 24/01/2019 13:39

Yes, I do. Yesterday I had banana, apple, peppers, onions, sweet potato, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, lemon and courgette.

What you do is plan the meal around the veg (and fruit), then think about the protein and finally carbs (if any).

dementedpixie · 24/01/2019 13:40

Soup won't count for more than 2. You wouldn't be eating 80g of each of the veg in it
