5 a day

Who regularly gets theirs?
Considering I am vegan I get mine ridiculously infrequently. Who manages and who is a bit crap like me Blush

It doesn't matter, if you are eating nine or ten types of fruit and veg, you are almost certainly having at least five in terms of the suggested portions for five a day. Just have lots, don't get too hung up on portion sizes for veg.

ppeatfruit · 24/01/2019 13:45

Yes I do, more than 5 actually because due to a bad family health history, I follow the Blood Type way of eating which suggests that A types eat mainly organic fruit and veg. Which I do.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 24/01/2019 13:53

I really struggle, as I just don't can't eat enough. I probably only have 3 portions a day, of veg, and I don't like fruit. Apples are OK, but everything else is really sour.

I can't eat pulses because they cause bloat, and the texture is horrible, fresh tomatoes I love, but they give me lesions on my tongue, and anything acidic, like juices, give me reflux.

I love salad leaves and veg, but struggle to have enough.

My ideal meal is some protein ie: fish, steak, chicken, with two veg or a side salad. That fills me up. Also I don't snack.

Seriously, if anyone has any alternative suggestions I would love to hear them.

BrieAndOatcakes · 24/01/2019 13:54

I probably average 2 a day. 4 is rare, don't think I ever do 5!

CecilyNeville · 24/01/2019 13:59

Soup can be a great carrier for veggies; when I'm a bit low on veg, I pack a lot into a soupy dinner. An onion, three medium tomatoes, a carrot, a stick of celery all sweated together, then chicken stock and a couple of handfuls of spinach or shredded cabbage/greens, and half a can of borlotti beans. Simmer a bit. Liberally cover in parmesan.

According to the 'what is a portion' guides, that's about four.

cinemalover · 24/01/2019 14:17

So far today: melon Grin
I eat plenty of veg though at dinner (think half a broccoli!) and today am planning a vegan bolognese so will use courgette, onion, salad etc for that.

I didn't have breakfast today (running late!) and usually have avocado on toast with a tomato so that gets 2 good ones in early!

LikeACowsOpinion · 24/01/2019 14:29

I hate fruit; cannot eat it in any forms apart from lemon wedges (in hot water and other drinks) and pomegranate seeds.

So I'm limited to just vegetables.
I used to be really good, eating vast portions of raw veg throughout the day but at the moment my diet is an absolute shambles.

I'm lucky if I manage one portion and even that's a rare occurrence Blush
Can only get better I suppose.

HappyStripper · 24/01/2019 14:30

To be honest I end up with quite a few days with no fruit and veg. I’m trying to up it but only really got it up to 4 yesterday which was a good day. I just find it hard to include unless you basically base your whole diet around it.

BabiesComeWithHats · 24/01/2019 14:32

Crikey Kikipost, I would have serious tummy ache if I ate that every day!

I probably struggle, but top up with a smoothie/healthier bought soup and have rocket/salad leaves with most dinners.

Fruit seems to go straight from shopping bags into children like some kind of Derren Brown vanishing trick Hmm

speakout · 24/01/2019 15:01

I find it easy.

Breakfast- a handful of berries on my museli. Glass of fresh orange juice. Mid morning snack is an apple or banana.
Lunch will involve salad or a vegetable soup often both. Afernoon a satsuma or a pear.
Dinner usually two portions of veg,

So seven portions on average,

HRTpatch · 24/01/2019 15:05

I eat a lot of veg...about 7 portions a day....and about 3 of fruit. Much prefer veg.

spinabifidamom · 24/01/2019 15:14

I make a effort. I plan carefully. Today for example, I've had banana on toast for breakfast, and baked apple for lunch and stewed pears for dinner later. Usually I have about 3 or 4 in a day. That is all I can realistically manage.
It is uncomplicated, however.

dworky · 24/01/2019 15:31

I'm not vegan but make sure I consume at least 5 a day.
I'm hoping it will make up for the fact that before the age of 25ish, I ate not one green vegetable. Confused

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 24/01/2019 15:32

I struggle with the 5 a day, it’s all ridiculously expensive, I usually have 3, 4 maximum. If I’m having salad then I can reach for 6 😂

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 24/01/2019 15:36

When we have a roast we always have at least 5 veg.... I don’t really like fruit per say, usually opt for fruit juice which luckily counts.
If I have a full salad ( usually once a week) I usually have lettuce, sweet corn, beetroot, carrot, cherry toms, red onion, pepper and mushrooms. I have side salad most day which is lettuce and cherry toms and onion.

Megan2018 · 24/01/2019 15:37

I'm hit and miss.

I have fruit juice in the morning so that counts as 1, and always 2 veg (or salad in Summer) with dinner - so daily it is a minimum of 3.

I try to have an apple daily (I hate fruit) and if my lunch is soup or salad then that's another 1. But there are days when I only have 3 because I have stuffed chips for lunch instead.

It's not hard if you like fruit. I hate most fruit. I can force down an apple and don't mind grapefruit - but every other fruit is just horrid. Too sweet. I like savoury. I can eat bowls of steamed broccoli though.

If it was 5 portions of cheese a day though I'm your girl.........

Ollivander84 · 24/01/2019 15:39

Er. I had a banana? Blush
I usually eat a banana and raspberries mostly days

Mummylife2018 · 24/01/2019 15:47

Wow! So one slice of cucumber is one portion? That's amazing!

Mummylife2018 · 24/01/2019 15:49
5 a day
Meltedicicle · 24/01/2019 16:09

OP, hummus is chickpeas though and don’t they count? They are on my chart thing that I printed off a while back for the kids! Can you grate some carrot into your hummus for extra veg in the pitta?

I’d say I do get mine- today I had blueberries and raisins mixed with shreddies for breakfast, apple as morning snack, roast veg and hummus wrap for lunch, naked bar for afternoon snack and then tea will be lamb cawl with cabbage side and glass of orange juice.

Bumblebee39 · 24/01/2019 16:10

I'm pregnant and being fussy at the moment I'm lucky to get 1-2 portions. That's HG though so I'm mostly eating non-Vom foods like crisps and toast.

Normally I would have 1-2 during the day and 2-3 with dinner so that would be 3-5 portions.
Usually just a piece of fruit (like defrosted berries, half a grapefruit or a satsuma or two) with breakfast.
Lunch- a bit of salad in my sandwich.
Dinner- broccoli, carrots end cauliflower.

I don't really like fruit much anymore. I used to love strawberries and bananas but now find them much too sweet and sickly. I like slightly bitter fruits and tomatoes though.
I love greens though- lambs lettuce, rocket, cabbage, leeks, etc. As well as avocados, asparagus, artichokes. I don't eat enough of them as I'm a bit lazy and just cook in the evenings.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 24/01/2019 16:13

Hardly ever but I need to get better. Unless jaffa cakes count...

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/01/2019 16:28

So one slice of cucumber is one portion

Only if it's a really thick slice that weighs 80 g.

Seems that the they didn't interview many Mumsnetters when they did the surveys that come out with results like '70% of Britons don't get their 5 a day'.

nyebevanshair · 24/01/2019 16:56

Yes, but mainly fruit.

Breakfast - 2x satsuma
Lunch - jkt pot, tuna with a large salad of various vegetables. Followed by a banana and an orange
Mid afternoon - grapes, blueberries
Dinner - salmon and salad.

However, I often substitute whole meals for chocolate.
