Cordial-drinks with ONLY sugar

Hi,

I’d like to buy a bottle of Ribena, or anything similar, without sweetener.

We don’t drink much of it, the bottle I’ve just finished was bought a long time before the sugar tax. It’s just for every now and again in the winter it’s nice to have a warm Ribema.

I’ve got a bottle of Rose’s Lime Juice Cordial which has only sugar but I’m looking for something more red fruity! Although I’m now a bit worried that when I go to replace that I’ll be met with the same thing!

I went to replace my Ribena this morning to find that although the bottle looks the same as ever, there are sweeteners in it.

I can’t have seeeteners, they give me stmoacge ache and UTIs! I just want a little bit of sugar!

Ta Wink

I’ve got some bottle green cordial which is just sugar. If you can find Tiessiere in the green cans is sugar, the grenadine is lovely.

Hungrypuffin · 22/01/2019 09:41

Belvoir do a blueberry cordial which is only sugar. I get it in Tesco - not the cheapest, but you don’t need much. A dash is v nice with sparkling water.

They added artificial sugars to vimto and Ribena last year sometime. I absolutely detest the flavour of artificial sugars and from what I have read it’s terrible for you and your LOs.. there is an elderflower cordial I have been using whilst trying to find something else, even Kia Ora has it in now.

I understand that a pin head of aspartamine is as sweet as a few spoonfuls of sugar, so it’s cheaper to ship and use as an ingredient. I think the UK government is backing it with its war on sugar but is ignoring the long term health implications of artificial sugar build up in our systems.

Probably sounds like a rant, but I just can’t stand the thought of people continuing to buy that awful stuff out of convenience.

Good luck finding a decent alternative, the whole isle and Tesco’s and ASDA didn’t have one kids juice with out it

Alternatively buy fresh carton juice and water it down....

VanillaSauce · 22/01/2019 09:49

Use actual juice and dilute with water.

floellabenjaminsearrings · 22/01/2019 09:50

I am looking for something like this too. Hot Ribena was my go to cold remedy. I'm coming down with a cold now and really miss it! Can't stand the taste of aspartame as well as how bad it is for you.

Seeline · 22/01/2019 09:50

Sainsburys still do their high-juice in full sugar versions - you have to be careful because there are no-sugar ones too.
I think Waitrose still do similar.
I get them because I get an upset stomach from artificial sweetners, and they taste revolting.

starryskies78 · 22/01/2019 09:51

This one has just sugar. I'm sorry I can't remember where I got it from. I too am so disappointed about Ribena.
I hate aspartame riddled products. I get the sugar issue, but when you only have it occasionally you want it to taste nice and not be filled with sweeteners!

www.rocksdrinks.co.uk/Our-Drinks/Squash is available at Tesco online, the blackcurrant is lovely. Belvoir is usually at Waitrose, lots of lovely flavours.

starryskies78 · 22/01/2019 09:52

Quick search and it looks like you can get it in Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Ocado. HTH.

HMIB · 22/01/2019 09:52

I'm just like you and don't drink any artificial sweeteners. More for the fact they are know to cause cancer. And I don't drink tonnes of sweet things anyway. But we use fresh squeezed juice (bottles) and water it down or I drink the belvoir cordial. You just have to look extra hard. X

skippy67 · 22/01/2019 09:53

Belvoir cordial is lovely. I used to love Ribena before they ruined it. I now drink Belvoir Raspberry and Lemon cordial which is delicious. Also love their ginger cordial.

fermezzlabouche · 22/01/2019 09:58

I glad I'm not the only one who occasionally just wants some sugar! I absolutely hate the taste of sweeteners and ribena is now horrible it was something I always had when poorly warm ribena was so comforting when you can't face tea/coffee.

I drink mostly water/coffee and like an elderflower presse when out for lunch, I had one recently and it was horrible completely ruined by sweeteners so frustrating. I understand the sugar tax and sugar problem, but there are many of us that just like these things as an occasional treat as they should be.

ChoudeBruxelles · 22/01/2019 09:59

Sainsburys do high juice without sweeteners

longtompot · 22/01/2019 10:07

Its a real bugbear of mine. Why can't they offer both? I hate artificial sweeteners both the idea of them and the taste. It ruins everything. Sainsbury's high juice don't have sweetners, as far as I can tell. Not the reduced sugar ones, the 'full fat' ones. I love the Alphonso mango and apple one, esp with sparkling water and a sprig of mint.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 22/01/2019 10:20

Keeping tabs on this thread cause I feel the same.
Roses's Lime Cordial is all sugar thank god.

You also have to watch out for tonic waters - Britvic has sweeteners in all of theirs - not sure about Schweppes - but Fever Tree is all sugar (as its 'upmarket' I assume)

user1488224831 · 22/01/2019 10:23

Saccharine, Alsuphamine K, Aspartame are the ones that I look out for, are there any others? I’m not sure about sucralose..

AFistfulofDolores1 · 22/01/2019 10:44

Sucralose is a canny bit of rebranding of the same substance to make it sound like sugar. The arseholes

Celebelly · 22/01/2019 10:48

Ooh watching this! I can't handle artificial sweeteners in drinks. They make me thirsty and my mouth really dry and horrible.

Lonecatwithkitten · 22/01/2019 10:51

Make your own here tells you how. I don't drink any commercially produced cordials as I grew up on homemade ones and prefer the taste. You then have complete control of what is in them.

JellyBellies · 22/01/2019 10:53

The Belvoir ones definitely. They are the only ones I buy now.

TheVonTrappFamilySwingers · 22/01/2019 10:53

Oh God yes I am with you all here. Ribbon - awful now. I can taste sweeteners at 100 paces. Had a traditional lemonade from Marks yesterday, the non fizzy one, now thats been loaded with sweeteners too. Came on to say the Rocks one mentioned above and some waitrose high juice versions (like the pink grapefruit but not any summer fruit version). Also pissed off supermarkets no longer sell fever tree original (i.e. full sugar) in the 200ml bottles - they've all chosen to sell the reduced sugar version. I have one occasionally and just want the mediterranean tonic full fucking sugar please. Grrr Angry

TheVonTrappFamilySwingers · 22/01/2019 10:53

Ribena not ribbon!

AlanThePig · 22/01/2019 10:54

Also saying Belvoir. It's like Ribena before they ruined it.

chipsandgin · 22/01/2019 10:55

I used to love Ribena & bloody hate sweeteners - Rocks is the best but not the same sadly!
