How did you celebrate your 40th?

Didn’t really celebrate my 39th as we were about to get married. Always said I would go to NYC for my 40th, but for various reasons this isn’t happening. But now I’m stuck for ideas, as everything seems like a waste of money as it’s nit NYC!
How did you celebrate yours/plan to celebrate? Inspire me please! (Or what would you do differently?!)

Got some Lego and became an afol (adult fan of Lego).

goodthinking99 · 20/01/2019 20:57

Week in a small Greek villa near Thessaloniki, it was fab. Friends conveniently got married on my 30th, so a big party without having to do anything, and 4 nights in NYC for my 50th. Now I'm starting to wonder what to do to herald in the next decadeGrin. Still got a good while to decide though.

Kemer2018 · 20/01/2019 20:59

We were in Egypt and oh treated me to a trip to Luxor, valley of the kings.
He bought me a beautiful Michael kors watch.
All other birthdays, i ignore.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 20/01/2019 21:13

Had a party and a weekend in a London visiting friends. It was great fun. I'm definitely going away for my 50th - and having a party!

Scarlettwaffle · 20/01/2019 21:14

So many going to NYC!!! Envy

Part of me thinks I’ll be happy with a day alone to have a bath, watch some tv and slob about in Pjs (work ft & mother to a toddler!) the other half thinks I’m going to spend the next 20 years planning my 50th!! Grin

Maybe I can start a new trend.... 41 is the new 40? Wink

On the day I had brunch with DH and a massage at a local spa. I really didn't want the pressure of a party but on my birthday weekend I had a fairly relaxed 'open house' with booze and nibbles for family and close friends which was perfect. DH and I then had a long weekend in Sorrento without the kids. It was worth feeling old.

mum11970 · 20/01/2019 21:23

Can’t remember, wouldn’t be anything particularly special as never have for any other significant birthdays.

HildaZelda · 20/01/2019 21:26

Mine's later this year. Hoping to go away somewhere, but no concrete plans yet. Have warned DH that under no circumstances is he to arrange a surprise party. He knows I mean it.

letsdolunch321 · 20/01/2019 21:28

Had a garden party, was great fun started at 8.30pm finished at 5.20am 🥳

NanooCov · 20/01/2019 21:30

Afternoon tea, night in a posh hotel, theatre and posh meal with DH.

Then long weekend away in New Forest with DH and DS. Including a trip to Peppa Pig Wotld!😂

Babygrey7 · 20/01/2019 21:30

Karaoke in the local pub with my friends

We had such a laugh

Never thought to go to NYC or something!!!

Maybe I need to be more ambitious

didireallysaythat · 20/01/2019 21:31

Went to work I think...

I think I'm.an outlier here. I went to NYC with work last year, had half a day spare and honestly couldn't find anything to do so I headed back to the airport....

feebeecat · 20/01/2019 21:33

Dh organised a lovely surprise trip to Thomasland (at Drayton Manor). Toddler dc loved it Hmm
Organised my own 50th, NYC. Teen dc loved that too Grin

MissMarplesKnitting · 20/01/2019 21:34

Went to work.

Did a parents evening.

Thrills.

Did get a nice weekend away in the Cotswolds the weekend after, mind. I'm not one for parties, just me and DH is fine by me

isseywithcats · 20/01/2019 21:36

A meal with family and some friends then nightclubbing afterwards

daisym00n · 20/01/2019 21:38

Went on a cycling holiday in Vietnam.

longtompot · 20/01/2019 21:40

I had a big garden party at home. Beginning of December so chilly, but dry and clear and a fab night :)

RunningNinja79 · 20/01/2019 21:43

Im 40 next week. I would have liked a party, but I dont have a large amount of friends so opting for the easier option of a meal out. Im also having a meal out with my family (parents, DH and DCs). The actual day DH is taking me to buy some trainers. Its a week day so the DCs are at school. We will be going out again for another meal. We are looking to go away in half term though, most likely to NYC. Sorry.

My 30th just went by with no big celebration and I dont have much of a social life anyway so all these meals out with other people is a bit special. All I want is to have a night with friends and alcohol just for me.

Also I'm doing my 100th parkrun the Saturday after.

TBH I wish I was a bit more adventurous with my 40th year plans, but that's all I've got.

BoogleMcGroogle · 20/01/2019 22:18

A lovely lunch with my parents, then cocktails at The Savoy with old, old friends and then we watched Toby Jones in The Birthday Party. The irony was not lost.....

SouthwarkSkaters · 20/01/2019 22:18

It’s my 40th this year too and I’m planning to spend the whole year celebrating Grin

So far I’ve got a trip to London with DD for a concert, Spice Girls concert, then going to France for the women’s football World Cup (with possibly a little trip to Disneyland Paris Blush)... my actual birthday is on a Saturday end of half term so we’ll probably go somewhere then - NYC being one of the options... and then in December either go home for Christmas or a trip to Lapland. It’s also DH’s 50th and DD’s 10th, so plenty of reasons to celebrate Smile

FrenchyQ · 20/01/2019 22:20

Went to the zoo with my husband and kids

scaryteacher · 20/01/2019 22:28

Dh took me to a local restaurant with rooms, which was very lovely, as we stayed the night. Great food and a fab breakfast.

Later we went to Antwerp, where I had some diamond earrings made for my birthday present.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 20/01/2019 22:33

I had a big party. It was in the summer so we just had an open house and a barbecue. It was fab!

InvisibleToEveryone · 20/01/2019 22:50

Mine is soon, was also supposed to be a NY trip, but money and circumstances have conspired against me.

So instead , I'll be at work!

Worsethingshappenatsea · 20/01/2019 22:58

Overnight stay in a hotel with 15 girlfriends for a Murs Vs Mars (Olly Murs and Bruno Mars ! ) tribute act including dinner and breakfast . Hotel had spa facilities too which was lovely.

4 days in NYC with DH , DB and SIL

I'm still friends with 7 of my school friends too so we went to Tenerife for 5 days too for a joint 40th celebration it was fab
