What words/sayings annoy you?

Just curious if it's just me but I find 'reaching out' so annoying. Less so, but when people are talking about paying for something 'forked out'

"With the greatest respect" or in other words "get ready cos I'm about to insult you"

LordPickle · 14/01/2019 15:42

I despise when women say "I need the little girls room". Just say loo! "Little girls room" sounds twee and juvenile.

Also when people say "brought" instead of "bought". I really hate that one. Angry

LordPickle · 14/01/2019 15:44

Oh and when people say they are "gagging" for a tea. It makes me think of actual gagging and it seems like a ridiculous way to express your desire for something to drink.

PerfectPeony · 14/01/2019 15:47

Boobie/ boob when referring to BF. Makes me cringe so bad. Like ‘she wants boobie’.

We just say milk or feed. ‘Do you want some milk’. I’m not a walking pair of boobs!

SauvignonMum · 14/01/2019 15:47

On MN holiday threads

We 'did' Paris, we 'did' NY, We 'did' DLP...

I don't even know if it's incorrect or not, but I have such an irriational hatred for it, that I usually stop reading the thread.
What's wrong with saying 'We went to NYC' Confused

LadyGAgain · 14/01/2019 15:48

Oh and "living my best life". WTAF. It's ridiculous.

FloralCup · 14/01/2019 15:49

Using 'woman' as an adjective - a woman newsreader, a woman councillor - the word is female!
If anyone uses it around me I try to make mention of man vet, man pilot, man shopkeeper etc.

allinthelineofduty · 14/01/2019 15:53

I have an irrational dislike of "talk me down" which sometimes seems to be a bit dramatically over-used on MN.

mimibunz · 14/01/2019 15:54

Gutted, needs must, every little helps

Omzlas · 14/01/2019 15:56

"I was today years old when..."

Gives me so much rage, it's untrue

"Bae" is another. Stop dropping random letters from words and trying to make another word that sounds the same.

JustAPenny · 14/01/2019 15:58

What is bae supposed to be/mean?

OP posts:
SuziQ10 · 14/01/2019 16:12

Touch base

TJBetty · 14/01/2019 16:21

' I love you to the moon and back'

'Smashed it!'

Both annoy the hell out of me.

Trills · 14/01/2019 16:22

When people call any word or phrase they dislike an "Americanism"

HesterShaw21 · 14/01/2019 16:37

KitsandCaboodles, I had to look up 'flavour text' as my US boss says this a lot.

On Urban Dictionary, "In a game, sometimes items, actions, or mechanics etc. will have flavor text, which are just extra snippets of text that aren't related to actual gameplay rules or affect anything-- they're just there for effect. It's pretty much just fluff, but it can add realism, enhance the tone, include extra background information or narrative, or be funny."

So he would use to when trying to give me background on an issue that had come up, or at the start of a meeting when introducing information to set the scene ("Let me give you all some flavour text here...")

DuggeesWoggle · 14/01/2019 17:08

I've said this before on a similar thread, they come up every few weeks! I have only seen it on here and Twitter links (not on Twitter myself) but when people talk about "throwing X under the bus" (usually women and girls). I just have an image of someone holding a child by one arm and one leg and flinging them under a jacked up bus. Such a bizarre phrase but it seems to be gaining traction.

The 'needs gobe' thing really irritates me too. I had a Scottish colleague who would say things with that construct all the time. Eg. This needs done or or that thing needs printed. But that was a dialectal thing. It's not part of our dialect where we live at all and yet up it pops on selling sites all the time. Needs gone. Grr!

winterinmadeira · 14/01/2019 17:13

Please Bear with me
Reached out
Aw but I’m blessed

HesterShaw21 · 14/01/2019 17:27

winter, yes! And the shortened form "Bear with"

HeathRobinson · 14/01/2019 17:32

Gotten.

iklboo · 14/01/2019 17:37

Smile, it may never happen
Cheer up love

PinkAvocado · 14/01/2019 22:02

I’ve thought of others.

Singular used when the plural should be. E.g.
‘A nude lip’

‘Gift’ used as a verb and ‘make’ used as a noun. E.g.
‘I was gifted these for Christmas’
‘Just a couple of my recent makes’

Openandshut · 15/01/2019 11:00

'He's a great dad' usually preceded by a long list of abusive, controlling, selfish and neglectful behaviours. No he isn't! He's a terrible father. And if he abuses his wife/partner I don't care if he's supposedly great with the kids and spends a lot of time with them, taking them here and there, he doesn't deserve the title. Abusing a child's Mother is one of the worst things a man can to do a child. No good father does that.

I know that it can be hard to see the woods for the trees sometimes but it really pisses me off when I see someone claiming that their partner is a good father no matter how selfish and neglectful he might be.

Housewife2010 · 15/01/2019 11:05

I hate things being described as "marmite". People who use that word always seem to need to define it e.g " my new dress is marmite- you either love it or hate it". Personally I don't find Marmite to be so polarising. I would never have it on toast but as an ingredient I like it. Nigella's Marmite Spaghetti is delicious.

Anonalongadingdong123 · 15/01/2019 13:00

"quick and dirty" I couldn't believe hearing this in a meeting after being away on mat leave. Was used as in "just give me some quick and dirty figures on that". Gets used all the time in work now. Yuk!

uhtredsonofuhtred · 15/01/2019 13:04

Moist and salad 🤢
