My tooth abscess seems to be spreading round my face 😖

I started antibiotics on Friday, dentist said they should clear it up (he had done a temp filling on thur, I had to go back next day, with horrendous pain)

He said it.looked like infection, and to take antibiotics, and go back on Thursday.

Well it's swollen whole bottom side of my face, and now seems to be working around the front.

Do I go to dentist or doctors tomorrow?

The dentist.

mummmy2017 · 13/01/2019 15:40

Try warm salt water.. Gargle with it, it draws out the infection... Repeat as often as you like...

Woohoo1 · 13/01/2019 15:40

Dentist, what anti biotics are you taking

I would phone 111 today. If it's an infection that's getting worse, then it's potentially serious.

BastardGoDarkly · 13/01/2019 15:48

I was considering 111 tbh.

I'm taking amoxicillin and metronodazole. This is 3rd day.

111 is a good idea if it’s spreading that fast.

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2019 15:55

Dentist.

My GP has repeatedly told me that doctors don’t do teeth. I had a lot of teeth problems a few years ago.

Haggisfish · 13/01/2019 15:56

But a and e do serious infections. If phone 111, and especially if you have temp or difficulty swallowing.

Mrsidgaf · 13/01/2019 15:56

I had this, my dentist told me to ice my face as much as possible.

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2019 16:00

Good point Haggisfish

jq28 · 13/01/2019 16:00

If it's spreading to your neck and affecting your airway go to a and e

BastardGoDarkly · 13/01/2019 16:19

I called 111. They're going to call back shortly.

When I went through the amount of painkillers I've taken, she said it was way too many Confused

How are you feeling OP??

WhoWants2Know · 13/01/2019 18:20

My face did the same thing a few days into antibiotics when I had an abscess. Luckily that's when some of the pain subsided as the infection moved out of the tooth.

By the time I had finished the course of antibiotics, the swelling had gone down.

Woohoo1 · 13/01/2019 18:22

Please please be careful taking metronidazole, you can’t gave alcohol in any form. Don’t make the mistake of using alcohol mouthwash like I did! 🤮🤮🤮

PurpleWithRed · 13/01/2019 18:24

Take timed photos of your face to show how the swelling is progressing

Mrsmorton · 13/01/2019 18:29

If you can feel it when you swallow, you must go to A&E. Likewise if it's under your nose, that is a very high risk area.

These are facts. Hopefully you've had some advice OP.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 13/01/2019 18:31

Hope it's feeling a bit better.

BastardGoDarkly · 13/01/2019 18:31

They haven't called back! I called again at 4.30. They said they're dealing with high levels of calls, and would call back when they can.

It's not in my neck, or near nose, so I think I'll wait and see what tomorrow brings.

If I go back to dentist, what can he do? The thought of him pulling my painful mouth about fills me with dread.

Diary is that you? Yappy? Or another one? Shock

Oldraver · 13/01/2019 18:33

How long is the course of anti-biotics ? I was only given 4 days and ended up needed three courses. i think there has been a moce for shorter courses and I think sometimes it isn't enough

Foodylicious · 13/01/2019 18:38

111 might be able to sort you out with an urgent dental appt.
It could be for tomorrow, and you might have to pay a small amount (if you can).

If they think it's more serious you should see a Dr today.
A dentist can treat the local infection, but if you are unwell or at risk if developing sepsis, you do need seeing by a Dr soon.

How are you feeling in yourself?

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/01/2019 18:46

Hi OP, I am in the same position as you. I got an emergency dental appointment on Friday and was given a five day course of Amoxycillin when an x-ray showed a small pocket of infection above a crown. I've been feeling like you this weekend. Mine subsided overnight but is painful again this evening. I've been taking 1 paracetamol and 1 ibuprofen together every two hours. I got some Oragel to take the edge off. I have also been swilling mouth with warm salted water. It's horrific. I'd rather give birth again. My face also hurts tonight, my cheek is sore. I am hoping it will have settled down by the morning but if not, I'll be ringing first thing. I am keeping an eye on temperature etc. It's horrible, it really is. I hope you feel better soon!

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 13/01/2019 18:57

bastard hello yes it's me yappy, that's my name when I log on in the laptop. How the fuck are you?

BastardGoDarkly · 13/01/2019 18:58

Hi MrsC it's truly bloody awful isn't it?

I've just got off the phone with 111. She thinks I'm fine to wait until tomorrow to see dentist, and that antibiotics will hopefully be doing their thing by the morning.

Oh MrsC she also said not to use any dental gels, as they can cause further problems Confused

And to not take anymore paracetamol based pain killers, as I'm just over the recommended amount.
