My tooth abscess seems to be spreading round my face 😖

I started antibiotics on Friday, dentist said they should clear it up (he had done a temp filling on thur, I had to go back next day, with horrendous pain)

He said it.looked like infection, and to take antibiotics, and go back on Thursday.

Well it's swollen whole bottom side of my face, and now seems to be working around the front.

Do I go to dentist or doctors tomorrow?

It really is hideous! Oh i'll stop using the Oragel, I've only used it a couple of times during the day just while the painkillers kick in. It just takes the edge off.

You can take ibuprofen surely? Or aspirin? Please do give salt water swills a try, very warm water and plenty of salt. It's very soothing.

I hope tomorrow we'll both feel better!

GenderIsAPrison · 13/01/2019 19:01

Do you know what th root cause is Op.

Sorry for pun.

Is it tooth decay or gum issue? These things can get complicated.

There's one tooth that needs root canal on Thursday. There's a possibility of another, but he couldn't still it out on Friday to temp fill it.

I assume it's from these?

I'll try the salt water now MrsC thanks.

Just realised this was your thread bastard!!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 13/01/2019 19:10

I had a tooth abscess when I was 14 and I got a needle and dug the temporary filling out. All the pus was building up with nowhere to go and causing the pain. I was emboldened by the fact that my dentist was my newly-qualified youngest uncle. Dad had to ring him and explain. He said to keep it clean and hope for the best - but it really relieved the pain and it didn’t get worse. I’m not advocating that (much), but if it’s still vastly swollen tomorrow ask him about leaving it open to drain.

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/01/2019 19:11

My dentist said mine was just bad luck! Nothing wrong with teeth and it's above a crown. So weird. I am so careful with my teeth as they are weak and break easily. It's all bollocks regardless. Nothing like dental pain. Urgh.

Mrsmorton · 13/01/2019 19:26

If you leave it open to drain, it gets colonised with bacteria that's very difficult to get rid of.

This is what dentists are talking about when they bang on about diet and sweets and "weak teeth" and so on and on and on.

Protect your children form toothache by limiting consumption of sweets and making sure they brush with a fluoride toothpaste and see a dentist at recommended intervals.

A massively unpopular statement on here usually but IDGAF. ¯\(ツ)/¯

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 13/01/2019 19:42

Yes please do bastard I'm not how to get my pms on my phone but hopefully it should be easy enough. Sorry you're dealing with abscess pain. It's a fucker!

WhoWants2Know · 14/01/2019 10:21

Any improvement?

KeiTeNgeNge · 14/01/2019 11:54

Did it settle!

BastardGoDarkly · 15/01/2019 02:07

Hello! The swelling has gone down a lot, and the pain has been much more manageable.

Thanks for the advice all Flowers

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/01/2019 19:42

Glad you're feeling better OP, mine has improved too but not cleared with the whole course of amoxycillin. The new tablets they gave me have horrendous side effects that I have suffered before so going back tomorrow for something else. Am so fed up of it! I can at least eat more comfortably and painkiller gaps are much bigger.

BastardGoDarkly · 16/01/2019 01:20

Hi MrsC I'm thinking I need more antibiotics Confused my face is still so sore, and I'm still popping pain killers. Only got tomorrow left of amoxicillin, that's not going to clear it is it?

OP posts:
KeiTeNgeNge · 16/01/2019 02:17

No, you’ll need another course

BastardGoDarkly · 16/01/2019 08:02

Thanks Kei I'll ring them today, that's dentist yes? Not docs.

OP posts:
KeiTeNgeNge · 16/01/2019 08:34

Yes Dentist can write you a script. I had to have a double lot when my root canal developed an abscess.

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/01/2019 15:42

Hi OP, due to intolerance, I've got a second course of amoxycillin today. I am going to have to have some work done as there is a pocket that shouldn't be there (due to having a crown after a broken tooth incident) which means I couldn't have avoided this regardless of what I did. It will also come back. I haven't needed any painkillers since yesterday but she said this course should knock it entirely on the head. I hope you get sorted soon! It's bloody rubbish.

WhoWants2Know · 16/01/2019 18:07

If amoxicillin doesn't work, that's when they usually move on to metronidazole. It's harsher, so it does work, but you really do need to avoid alcohol and mouthwash.

BastardGoDarkly · 16/01/2019 20:34

Thanks folks.

I had the metro one who was taking them both for 5 days. Amoxicillin for 7.

He's booked me in to see him Friday. So we'll see.

I'm doing less pain killers, but it's still nagging when it's been a few hours, and sore to touch my face.

Glad you're on the mend MrsC

Roll on bloody dentures eh? 🙄

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/01/2019 21:12

Thanks Bastard. Bless you, I really hope they get it sorted. Keep on with the salt water rinses, they really really helped. You can at least do those as much as you like. Indeed, I know what you mean...my teeth are perfect to look at, but they are in fact insidious little bastards Grin
