I'll start:

Vienetta's especially mint
Viscount biscuits
Nesquik milkshake

I had a childhood apparently obsessed by foods my parents declared not for daily consumption!

Shopping in River Island. Nearly all my clothes were second hand or from poundstretchers etc. I remember feeling very intimidated going into River Island when I was a young teenager.

Magissa · 13/01/2019 00:52

Vesta Chicken supreme. An early posh pot noodle I suppose. My mum was a fantastic cook and made everything from scratch but somehow Chicken Supreme ended up being my favourite meal.

popehilarious · 13/01/2019 08:34

Vienetta, although we did have Gino Ginelli toffee fudge on Sundays.
Nintendo - I only had a ZX Spectrum which I loved to bits but you had to hook it up to my mum's tape player when she wasn't listening to the radio ahs the tapes took ages to load. (Taught me some basic programming though!)
Fresh milk instead of powdered
Ribena instead of sugar-free squash... I remember having it at a friend's (whose house smelt lovely and had soft non-patterned carpet) and excitedly asking my mum if we could buy some...
Clothes/shoes from high street shops not the market....

PineappleTart · 13/01/2019 08:40

Potato croquettes for me too, childhood me thought that must be the fanciest of all potatoes.

TickleMeEmo · 13/01/2019 08:45

Butter
Viennetta
Fresh fish

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 13/01/2019 08:52

Owning a TV and not renting it.

MrsJayy · 13/01/2019 08:56

MawkishTwaddle · 13/01/2019 08:57

Camay soap.
Broccoli.
Pasta, eaten out of a bowl with just a fork, preferably staring out of a large picture window while you eat.
A choice of breakfast cereal.
Eating at the table.

Stuckmom · 13/01/2019 08:57

@ThunderOnlyHappens Heinz puddings in a tin. We used to get so excited Aswell when Mum got one out of the cupboard. Do they still do them?

toomanypillows · 13/01/2019 08:58

Patent shoes - I always had sensible 'matte' shoes and I was so jealous of the girls who had shiny ones

Jeans. My mum never bought me jeans - I had loads of clothes but for some reason not jeans. They were the first clothes item I bought with money from my part time job

Branded clothes - well, the expensive ones. I think my parents just thought them a waste of money. So I got Dunlop trainers and the like. My friend got some Nike trainers for her birthday and my mum really shut that down before I begged for them by saying they were common. When clearly Dunlop trainers are much more common 😂

Bamchic · 13/01/2019 09:02

Proper tuppaware and not just foil/free school meal lunches.
Absolutely wet myself when I got my first lunchbox. I maintain that day, alongside the day we got a dog was the best day of my childhood.

Beerflavourednipples · 13/01/2019 09:05

@notquitethesame

I remember my family going to a friend's house for Sunday lunch and one of these was served as dessert. The mum of the family clearly thought this was very posh as it was brought to the table with a lot of fuss and 'it's a Sarah Lee' said very proudly.

'It's a Sarah Lee' has really made me laugh! Ah, them were the days! Smile

Beerflavourednipples · 13/01/2019 09:08

Nintendo - I only had a ZX Spectrum which I loved to bits but you had to hook it up to my mum's tape player when she wasn't listening to the radio ahs the tapes took ages to load. (Taught me some basic programming though!)

Yes, we had the same with the tapes taking ages to load and I remember my cousins had a Nintendo and you just put the cartridge in and off you went and we were all just like 'whhaaaaaaaaaat'?

NakedAvenger · 13/01/2019 09:09

I had a friend whose parents had Eternal Beau everything! Not just the octagonal plates but placemats, cutlery cups, kettle, serving spoon oven gloves etc but they also had an Eternal Beau toilet, toilet roll holder, toilet brush and sink. I thought that was beyond fancy whereas it was an Argos job lot!

Friends parents who put food in serving bowls to help yourself rather than rationed plated portions.

Soda streams

Hostess trolley!

NakedAvenger · 13/01/2019 09:12

A fridge full of individual cans of Coke rather than a slightly flat plastic bottle.
I thought it was terribly fancy and American

planespotting · 13/01/2019 09:15

Vienetta Smile
Love it and I don't care what people say
After eights are not fancy?

TSSDNCOP · 13/01/2019 09:21

toomanypillows in our house you knew whatever you wanted was doomed when DM brought out the nuclear option of said item/activity being “common”

ITV: common
Barbie: common
Pierced ears:common

Crapbags · 13/01/2019 09:23

Cannot fathom why but I remember thinking corner baths were the height of sophistication.

From the other side I remember a girl from school taking the mickey out of me to others saying that I thought I was ‘posh’ because I had ‘gold’ taps in my bathroom?! Of course they were gold in colour not actual gold?!

NakedAvenger · 13/01/2019 09:25

For those unfamiliar with Eternal Beau. Here is the fanciest of them all!
I present. The Eternal Beau hostess trolley!!

Things you thought were fancy when you were young but perhaps were not!
Knittink · 13/01/2019 09:26

It's funny how we all aspired to shop-bought crap, when these days a nice homemade cake etc would be seen as much posher. My DM was a good cook, made foreign stuff too, and made lovely cakes, but I still got excited at a Sarah Lee!

Grin at orange juice and After Eights being posh. Lots of the things mentioned weren't even particularly expensive or good quality - were we all just fooled by the advertising?

jusdepamplemousse · 13/01/2019 09:30

Chicken kiev
Quiche lorraine
Ferrerro Rocher
Jurys hotels
Lanzarote

MrsJayy · 13/01/2019 09:31

Growing up a lot of food/sweets were seperated into adults and kids I wonder if that is why things seemed fancy ? I didn't taste a cornetto till i was about 15 and even then i was told not to waste it I inhaled it nothing was wasted Grin

jusdepamplemousse · 13/01/2019 09:32

Oh and for some reason I thought flora was fancy and lamented the real butter my mum insisted on Grin

MawkishTwaddle · 13/01/2019 09:34

Imperial Leather.
Pantene.
Mayonnaise, as opposed to salad cream.
Minestrone soup.
Silky nighties.

AmateurPrepper · 13/01/2019 09:41

Think society's gone too far the other way now tbh, and the 'special-occasion-ness' has all but disappeared from eating out, which is a pity.

Depends on your budget, we haven't eaten out since summer. We had a carvery, was such an occasion, reminded me of how I felt going for my first ever pub restaurant meal as a child. Being skint is a bore, but I can confirm the special things are very special. A few years ago I'd have eaten out so often I couldn't tell you what I had or where.
