Do you know any or are you one?

I was having a casual conversation with a friend about what I'm doing tomorrow, not much, ordering Chinese takeaway, reading and watching some films. My friend was horrified that I'm going to have fried rice with my Chinese. Apparently no one does that. Every single person orders boiled rice with their Chinese takeaway. You can't have fried rice with a Chinese. Everyone knows that.

She's like this with so many things. She's becoming known as 'You can't have' because she says it constantly. She's lovely but I feel that she's turning into a Peter Kay sketch. Almost every time I have something she says 'but you can't have that'. Things that you can't have include mayonnaise on a burger, tea and cake, it's coffee with cake and tea with biscuits apparently, Fish with potatoes in any other form, it has to be chips. Sushi without soy sauce etc. I'm starting to cringe when she wants to go for a meal or coffee because I know what's coming and she's so insistent about it.

It's a minor issue I know, but I'm curious to know if you know anyone like this.

P.S She is not autistic but I am.

This would get my goat no end.

neddle · 10/01/2019 19:31

I think I’d just reply ‘I can and I will’ every single time.

What?! A Chinese with fried rice is perfectly normal.

Sparklfairy · 10/01/2019 19:32

If you can't have fried rice with Chinese why is it on every Chinese menu?

TootTootPeanutbutter · 10/01/2019 19:33

I usually do say I can and I am but it doesn't stop her. I'm not the only one that she annoys with this. She's nice so it's a minor issue but I do wish that she'd stop it. She goes on about it for five minutes at a time too.

I would tell her that she's beginning to be so dogmatic that she's sucking the fun out of every social occasion and you're getting a bit pissed off with it. Before she continues and you snap and say too much.

Soubriquet · 10/01/2019 19:35

Chicken fried rice

Your friend is barmy

PhilomenaButterfly · 10/01/2019 19:35

I know how you feel. DH sometimes acts more autistic than I do.

TootTootPeanutbutter · 10/01/2019 19:35

I asked her about that but it's on the menu to give people the choice but no one actually orders it, or crispy duck apparently.

Pfft fried rice with chinese every time! And i don't drink tea OR coffee...does that mean i'm not allowed cake or biscuits?!
You're eating it, not her. Tell her to pipe down

AngelsWithSilverWings · 10/01/2019 19:37

Chinese with fried rice is normal although I only order plain boiled rice now to be healthier. DH insists that you have to have rice or noodles but never both as that would be double carbs. I ignore him!

I have a thing about lasagne. It has to eaten with a side salad only. When I see it advertised in pubs as being served with chips I'm irrationally annoyed. My mum serves it with roast potatoes which is just plain wrong. She ignores me Smile

HelmutFrontbut · 10/01/2019 19:38

Just order cheese with everything and make slurpy noises while devouring it. Be a Joey Tribbiani to her Monica Geller Grin

Skiphopnjump · 10/01/2019 19:48

I worked in a Chinese takeaway for two years as a student, taking orders. I think only once did anyone ever order boiled rice.

I'd just come back at her every time she say a you can't, by saying she can't. "Oh of course you can have fried rice, you can't have boiled rice with Chinese! Boiled rice is for curries!". Beat her at her own game.

TootTootPeanutbutter · 10/01/2019 19:55

Sympathies PhilomenaButterfly. I'm sure that your DH is lovely, as is my friend, but if I had to live with her and her pedantry, blood would be shed.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/01/2019 19:58

That's ridiculous.
I sometimes order boiled rice if I've got a few other dishes with sauce, but sometimes I have fried rice.
In fact sometimes I get half n half with curry sauce.

TootTootPeanutbutter · 10/01/2019 19:59

I've had a gentle word with her in the past after a long interrogation over my choice of pasta shape, but I think that I need to be a little firmer next time, and if that doesn't work I'll try SkiphopnJumps suggestion. I could have fun with that.

Just have weirder and weirder combinations of foods whenever she comes round.

Pasta with curry, cheese and peanut butter sandwiches, bananas dipped in ketchup. Whenever she says 'you can't eat that', just say 'watch me' and eat the whole thing without breaking her gaze. then run and barf if you've just eaten the bananas in ketchup

FreshlyWashed · 10/01/2019 20:04

but no one actually orders it, or crispy duck apparently.

She's obviously not met my DSis or DD - they both adore crispy duck.

Have you tried "I'm having the food I like, please let me enjoy it" ?

Or how about turning back on her and exclaiming at all her choices, whatever they are? That might be fun!

Pissedoffdotcom · 10/01/2019 20:04

Crispy duck every time here! She is weird

Jamhandprints · 10/01/2019 20:09

She does sound very narrow minded, gastronomically speaking. Maybe she was brought up with a very limited diet. My OH was as his mum can't cook, he gets very upset when I do things like roast vegetables or buy sweet potatoes. But the most annoying thing is he thinks I'm the weird one!
Tell her not to be so boring! Or anticipate and say "lets get Chinese, this is going to upset you but I'm getting fried rice, end of."

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 10/01/2019 20:13

Eat her.

Well, ask her what she 'goes' with.

Then eat her (& a variation of what she goes with.)

BlackPrism · 10/01/2019 20:14

You can eat whatever the hell you want. I prefer noodles to rice, but enjoy fried rice.

DP and I often mix BBQ, Mayo and curry sauce all on the same burger.

I often have bass with new potatoes.

She sounds mental, tell her to mind her own.

And crispy duck is incredible. She's clearly not a foodie.

TootTootPeanutbutter · 10/01/2019 20:24

Curry sauce on a burger? That sounds intriguing. I may have to try it.
