There are ingredients in both chocolate & alcohol which can act as a cough suppressant. My medical textbook recommends liquor chocolates...! Smile

KeepSmiling80 · 09/01/2019 17:36

Vicks on the soles of your feet then socks on.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 09/01/2019 17:38

We have - touch wood - had a very good winter so far. But...

I bought this after reading about it in a magazine in the hairdressers of all places (article by a GP who had an interest in complementary therapies).

It’s an amozon link, but Holland & Barrett sell it too.

www.amazon.co.uk/s/?hvlocphy=9044919&hvptwo&hvnetw=g&keywords=kaloba+syrup&hvadid=259030426728&index=aps&hvpone&ref=pd_sl_1e9t3n9oc1_e&hvlocint&hvpos=1t2&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt=e&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&hvtargid=kwd-314570014025&adgrpid=50641584222&hvrand=10792355263821986144

I’d not heard of it before but was pleasantly surprised by the good reviews. Anyway, I have taken a couple of doses when I had a sore throat, thinking I had a cold coming on... and didn’t get a cold!

Enirely possible that I’ve just been lucky, but it’s something I plan to keep in the cupboard. Just in case.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 09/01/2019 17:42

The Kaloba is cheaper - I think £5.50 - in Holland & Barratt too.

spiderlight · 09/01/2019 17:42

Pineapple juice has worked well for my DH recently.

BartonHollow · 09/01/2019 17:44

The best cough medicine in the world EVER was Potters Herbal Cough Remover - I cant find it for sale anywhere anymore and have been left wondering if it was so good because there was SOMETHING in it Grin

RJnomore1 · 09/01/2019 17:46

I think my mum used to buy potters. It rings a bell.

I'll start with chocolate and see how it goes...

I was recommended a brand called Robitsons in a pharmacy once, and I remember to my surprise it actually worked to suppress a cough for a decent length of time!

ParisNext · 09/01/2019 17:50

I came on to recommend milk chocolate, nurofen, ameretto and Covonia cough medicine...just not all at once!

Mousewithascarf · 09/01/2019 17:55

If it’s a dry unproductive cough then Pholcodine linctus is the best I’ve found. You can get it over the counter in the chemist and it’s really cheap.

CatsMother66 · 09/01/2019 18:16

Another for vick on soles of feet. Really does work.

greyspottedgoose · 09/01/2019 18:17

I came on to say vicks on feet too

HRTpatch · 09/01/2019 18:18

Bronchostop

marvellousnightforamooncup · 09/01/2019 18:19

Death is a pretty failsafe cure. ☠️👻💀😉

Tidygirldml · 09/01/2019 18:19

Piriton liquid ..... works a treat in our house xxxx

3out · 09/01/2019 18:22

Gargle with TCP. You know the guy in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, who says that windolene is the solution to every problem in the world? Well, my grandad was like the English version, but with TCP. The annoying thing was that it normally did work!

Bumblebee39 · 09/01/2019 18:24

Another one for pholcodine linctus

However- a warning!
Whilst very effective on my cough it also sent me to sleep for about 12 hours- and I only took a small dose

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 09/01/2019 18:25

A colleague of mine is polish and was telling me yesterday about a cold cure she uses made with fermented cucumbers and a kg of garlic Confused. Apparently you can also hollow out a raw beetroot, add a bit of water and sugar, leave for a few hours then drink a few tbsp of the juice.

I am completely and utterly stuffed with cold today, can barely breathe. Still not tempted by either of those cures!

1Wildheartsease · 09/01/2019 18:28

GrandmaSharksDentures - I want your medical text book!

Zinc is the only thing that clinical tests shows as useful in reducing the length of a cold. I've heard that elderberries contain something good too - but haven't see test results on them.

Cough medicines -and most other things suggested- help with the symptoms - and give you distractions (like scent/doses)

Here we like warm rooms (especially at night) and put damp towels on these to keep the air moist.

I've always been tempted by Mark Twain's suggestion of the three hat cure: put a hat at the end of your bed and drink the spirit of your choice until you can see three. If you survive, the cold will no longer be of any concern.

Sympathy can be good too.

OldJoseph · 09/01/2019 18:28

Assuming this is connected to a cold, then try a nasal spray. I always get a cough after a cold, no matter how minor the cold. I spoke to many Drs over the years with not much help, the cough can be really debillitating. A nurse suggested using a nasal spray because the cough might be caused by a nasal drip at the back of the throat.
Every day I use 'Prevalin' and as soon as I get the symtoms of a cold I use Sudofed decongestant spray. It seems to have reduced the cough from 3 weeks to 1 week with much less coughing overall.

RJnomore1 · 09/01/2019 18:31

Death would be an option right now. My head is pounding and my pelvic floor is taking a complete hammering.

I've got a list for dh to go get me tomorrow now.

Amaretto
Piritin
Linctus
A beetroot...

Honey and lemon in hot water, even during the night when it has gone cold it seems to work.

Garlic and parsnip soup

JuniperBeer · 09/01/2019 18:38

Is it dry or productive?

wellhonestly · 09/01/2019 18:38

Infuse a bunch of fresh thyme in boiling water, strain, add honey and lemon if you must. Drink.

Repeat all day instead of tea/coffee. (Works best if you grow thyme in your garden Wink )
