Any other Diet Coke addicts?

hidinginthenightgarden · 07/01/2019 21:58

I worked out today that I drink around 150 litres of Diet Coke a day. Around 10 cans a week. Sometimes I drink more than that. It’s awful! I don’t drink tea or coffee though and don’t like drinking cordial all the time.
It’s a depressing realisation.
How much do you drink?
Any ideas for cutting down?

I love Diet Coke and could easily drink 5-7 cans a day. I don't buy it in for this reason!

pineapplebryanbrown · 08/01/2019 02:22

Ariadne me too with the fags, they go together very nicely.

hidinginthenightgarden · 08/01/2019 06:01

The last box I bought —last week— cost me 33p per can from Costco. Working out what I drink per week (which I just realised doesn’t include when we go out to the pub once a week) it’s £173 a year. But the reality I often pay more so I would estimate it is actually around £200. Considering we are pretty skint, that is not great either!

I used to be like this with Diet Coke - I was drinking 3-4 cans per day (most days) I decided to wean myself off as it was costing me a fortune and I was worried about all the chemicals I was drinking.

I gave up around 3 years ago cold turkey and it was really hard! But now I am not fussed at all, and like OP upthread I had one a few months ago and it was horrible! So now I drink sparkling water like it's going out of fashion 😂😂

Workschmurk · 08/01/2019 06:37

I drink 4-5 cans of Pepsi max a day - I'm definitely addicted and I hate that I am. I have gone without it for a couple of months before and felt better for it.

I being really good food wise - just lost 3.5 stone and Pepsi max is my treat so hard to give it up....

BrassicaBabe · 08/01/2019 06:46

So I'm in the boat with you guys. About 4 cans a day. Can I flip this? Is it really that bad? I watch my weight, I eat healthily, I exercise, I don't drink tea or coffee. Can I not have this little thing? GrinBlush

Ivegotthree · 08/01/2019 06:53

I gave up on April 1 last year and haven't had a drop since.

I met so many people who'd had cancer who told me that their specialist told them giving it up was the number one thing they should do.

Eventually it got to me. I'm so glad I gave it up. It never quenched my thirst and made me feel crap.

Ivegotthree · 08/01/2019 06:53

(I also live pretty healthily - run a lot, eat properly, don't smoke etc etc. So it bugged me that I had this dreadful habit that was way worse than, say, wine.)

autumnboys · 08/01/2019 06:55

I was addicted to it several years ago, but had to give it up cold turkey as part of an exclusion diet for the autoimmune condition I have. I had several days of headache, general aches & irritability. Once that had worn off though, I discovered that the stiff joints I had every morning (especially my ankles) were gone. I don’t know for sure that was why, could have been the extra water.

I did let myself have the odd glass of ordinary coke, but that crept up on me, so yes to the cross addiction as well.

U2HasTheEdge · 08/01/2019 06:57

Pepsi Max here.

I have been addicted for 16 years. I drink about 5 cans a day. Sometimes more, but 5 is average.

I started on Diet Pepsi then moved to Pepsi Max

U2HasTheEdge · 08/01/2019 07:06

A can of Pepsi Max is the first thing I have in the morning.

I have no desire to give it up. I don't like the cost of it and drinking from a bottle just isn't the same, but I don't even want to try to quit it.

I would probably drink more if cost wasn't an issue.

Surfskatefamily · 08/01/2019 07:10

10 cans aday us probably about the same as my mum. I worry about her diet of diet coke and cigarettes! However will never change her

Patienceisvirtuous · 08/01/2019 07:12

3-4 cans a day here. Love me my dc! 😳

Goldangel · 08/01/2019 07:16

I met so many people who'd had cancer who told me that their specialist told them giving it up was the number one thing they should do.

I’ve heard that too, I hardly drink it now. it also didn’t quench quite my thirst, i’ve slowly got myself into drinking fizzy water. Took a while to adapt but the fizz now hits the spot.

Ilovedotcotton · 08/01/2019 07:17

I have always drunk a lot of diet drinks, and to my shame, not been to the dentist for several years. I’ve just started going again and the drinks have done a lot of damage to my teeth - enough to scare me into going cold turkey. It’s not the sugar (I drink diet drinks) but the carbonation which erode the enamel. I drink about the same as you do each week. It’s so scary - I’m terrified now that all my teeth are going to fall out! It’s nit actually the case but I am looking into composite veneers to hide the worn enamel and to strengthen them.

Autu · 08/01/2019 07:25

I used to drink 2-5 cans a day and easily 4 glasses if eating out. I switched to the caffeine free version (not available when out and about but cans available in supermarkets) then stopped altogether. I switched to water with meals at home and swapped the cans during the day for tea or water.

I bought some in a pub about 6 months after giving it up and it was horrible!

tootssweet · 08/01/2019 07:26

I drink far too much Diet Pepsi/ pepsi Max Probably about 4 cans minimum a day. Like many of you I don't do tea or coffee but I'm trying to swap a can for a herbal tea & drop down my consumption. DD is getting bad habits from me & I need to change it.

hidinginthenightgarden · 08/01/2019 07:26

Those of you saying you drink about 4 cans a day, that's around 480 litres a year!!!

This is awful. It really is bad for you but I don't know how to stop! It is the carbonated bit that is the problem apparently. I get bored drinking water/juice. AHHHH!!! Dilemma!

bugaboo218 · 08/01/2019 07:36

I love diet coke. I could easily drink one or two of those 500ml bottles a day! I have to be really disciplined with my self though, so only have sparkling water in the house. With the occasional 500ml bottle of coke at the weekend.

My weakness is tea. I have at least 6 brews a day. Oh and at least one latte. I hate squash cordial though.

Diet Coke with ice is the best!

Isitmybathtimeyet · 08/01/2019 07:54

I used to drink loads but gave up on a sugar-free month as the sweetener triggers a sugar craving. Now I can't bear the taste. I drink fizzy water which actually stops me feeling thirsty too. It honestly didn't take a long period of abstinence to make it taste foul.

Spiderpants · 08/01/2019 08:05

I have given up for new year, I was just drinking too much and it was prettty much all i was drinking all day.
so I've gone cold turkey. Instill really want some but im not buying it in, so there is no temptation.
I have switched to a lemonade in the evenings just for a fizzy fix but at least im drinking squash through the day.

Littlejayx · 08/01/2019 08:08

I’ve found my people 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I panic if there’s none in the house, I’d easy have 5 cans a day. I love it so much

Flusteredwintertime · 08/01/2019 08:37

Completely addicted, to the point I've been quite upset to run out! I probably have a 2 litre bottle a day along with 5-8 coffees. Diet Coke is the first thing I add to the trolley on an online shop.

DH finds me so annoying in restaurants etc when I ask for diet Coke and they say 'is Pepsi okay?' and I say 'no it's not' and I've been known to take my own to places I know don't do diet Coke - drives him mad but they aren't the same thing!

AdamNichol · 08/01/2019 09:16

Used to be addicted - around 2 litres per day.
Took 20 years to finally bore myself off them; but I've found myself bereft of alternates.
I drink lots of coffee - Tassimo at home, cafetiere at work, lattes, etc if out and about. I have the occassional Lady Grey or Jasmine Tea, but don't really like tea all that much. Drink apple juice, but need to keep an eye on sugar/calories. Not keen on cordials.
So, of an evening, it's back to the diet coke or wine/beer (until OH starts to question if I'm developing a drinking problem).

Can drink water with a meal, but wouldn't choose it as a stand alone.

SecondTimeCharm · 08/01/2019 09:20

i LOVE it and can easily have 2/3 cans a day (plus coffee) if it’s in the house but i don’t have a very addictive nature so i can pretty easily go cold turkey too. also despise diet pepsi, any ‘cola’ and regular coke - has to be diet!
