Just about to have a bath and want to listen to one of these.

Whats the best one you've listened to?

David Jason and George Michael are both favourites of mine.

Martina Cole, the crime writer, was probably my stand out DID from 2018.

dingdang · 05/01/2019 21:48

Anne-Marie Duff is an excellent episode too

Kelly281 · 05/01/2019 22:03

I love the Desert Island Discs archive, it's passed many an afternoon at work. A recent favourite was Dr Henry Marsh.

MawkishTwaddle · 05/01/2019 22:06

The absolute worst was David Beckham.

What a vacuous berk.

cliffdiver · 05/01/2019 22:09

Thank you all for sharing.

I'm disappointed my commute is only 5 minutes, not sure when I'll have the time to listen to all of these!

Marian Keynes was very good.

I also liked Sir Simon Rattle.

SeptemberIssue · 05/01/2019 22:46

Stella McCartney’s is good — I really enjoyed her’s.

Paul O’Grady’s was also very good!

I much prefer Kirsty Young’s to any of the other presenters, Sue Lawley grates on me and I find her to be needlessly rude sometimes!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 05/01/2019 22:48

Mary Portas. Never been a particular fan so knew of her, but nothing about her. Her mother died when she was young. Her dad abandoned the family, effectively leaving her in charge and no money. Her resilience to get thru that impressed me.

SeptemberIssue · 05/01/2019 22:48

Also yes, Victoria Wood’s is good listening too.
& princess Margaret’s, purely for the comedic value and the blaze nature of her discs e.g.; “I’ll have my regiment of the Grenedier Guards playing...” its very insightful & she’s so witty. Thoroughly worth a listen.

southeastdweller · 05/01/2019 22:54

Julie Goodyear's was very moving and also quite funny.

PoliticalBiscuit · 05/01/2019 22:58

I really enjoyed Jimmy Carr, his life and his honesty was really interesting and not at all what I expected.

Ed Sheeran talking about his tenacity, work and cynicism was also really interesting.

Demis Hassabis - a computer game scientist talking about the next frontier of the digital age and DeepMind was incredible.

Like everyone else, David Nott, amazing. Stopped still in my kitchen for 30 minutes.

And yes! David Beckham's was awful Angry

rightreckoner · 05/01/2019 22:59

Doreen Lawrence, Mary Portas and Sandy Toksvig. All moving.

Worst one of all time - Lord Digby Jones. Terrible choices. Chose Simply the Best because when he worked at KPMG (or somewhere) they were Simply the Best. Boorish and inane. But somehow successful Confused

waterandlemonjuice · 05/01/2019 23:01

Kirsty was amazing interviewing Julie Burchill, do look that up in the archives

rightreckoner · 05/01/2019 23:02

I found George Michael’s music choices a bit odd too. Almost like he wasn’t all that interested. Maybe when you are a brilliant musician you have your own musical expression and someone else’s doesn’t matter that much - unless you are jamming to it too.

I often wonder if Stevie Wonder can listen to anyone else’s music without playing it. I mean, why would you if you can do everything ?

crummyusername · 05/01/2019 23:02

Love this thread.

I’ll second Chris Packham - great man and great music

Justin Welby is really worth a listen

Kylie Minogue was v good

I thought Ed Sheeran was really up himself, sorry :(

HollowTalk · 05/01/2019 23:04

Some great ideas here, thanks!

Paddy1234 · 05/01/2019 23:11

Dame Stephanie Shirley

Nigel Owens

Ratonastick · 05/01/2019 23:16

Martin Sorrell’s was really interesting. Not a man I am predisposed to like or admire, but a fascinating and surprising story.

Paddy1234 · 05/01/2019 23:17

I stopped in my tracks at Dame Stephanie 'Steve' Shirley

DoctorTwo · 05/01/2019 23:18

One of my favourites was Elif Shafak whose choices included System Of A Down and Arch Enemy. She was most interesting.

FreezerBird · 05/01/2019 23:23

Another vote for David Nott. Had never heard of him but it was absolutely enthralling. You'll need tissues. (And I hardly ever cry at the radio).

Nigel Owens.
Kathy Burke.

PoliticalBiscuit · 05/01/2019 23:29

@crummyusername Sheeran really was up himself, I just thought it was interesting. He's well known for easy pop but is a cynical bastard it seems! He wasn't very open but gave quite a history of the work involved. Just thought it was interesting, not charming!

WeepingSong · 05/01/2019 23:33

Andy Hamilton, because I love him for writing Drop the Dead Donkey. His music taste was a little unusual though.

VamillaSugar · 05/01/2019 23:41

Mr Timpson from Timpson shoe repair shops. His wife fostered soooooo many children.

Also Princess Margaret for being so condescending Grin

SarfE4sticated · 05/01/2019 23:45

Anne-Marie Duff and Victoria Wood were great, Allen Carr, not so much! Thought his music selections were pretty crap tbh.

Definitely going to find Marian Keyes, Mary Portas and Paul O'Grady tomorrow though.
