So when do the Christmas decorations come down?

I’ve had a look and there seems to be confusion of whether the decorations should come down on 5th it 6th. So what do you do in your family?

I've just taken ours down. Didn't put a lot up, tbh so a five minute job!

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 05/01/2019 17:58

tomorrow on the 6th the same as every year

Tree and bits down today. Outside bits down tomorrow. That way I please both 12th nights!

12th night starts tonight and ends tomorrow at sunset. Days used to be counted in nights from sunset to sunset so if you are following tradition all Christmas decorations should be down by sunset tomorrow when 12th night ends. Well thats what I have always gone by.

However I also have winter decorations that stay up till spring. Mainly scented candles and fairy lights. I hate the bare cold feeling when the tree comes down and this helps to keep the place feeling cosy.

We are finishing all the festive food and drink tonight and tomorrow too. The children are looking forward to tomorrow nights annual Ephiphany feast i.e. eating all the leftover 'party' food in the fridge and freezer.

Here in heavily Catholic south Germany it's the 6th they take them down on. These people combine religious devotion with the traditional German efficiency so I'm following their lead Smile It's quite nice here, epiphany - there's three kings bread with a crown for wwhoevergets the bun with the king in it, and kids dressed up as the three wise men also come round and chalk blessings on everyone's doorways. Having been half-heartedly raised as a Scottish protestant, I find it all very exotic Smile

I am a Scottish atheist but any excuse for a party especially in the winter months. I pretend to be Pagan to celebrate the winter solstice and pretend to be Catholic to celebrate Ephiphany. I have no shame.

They need to come down tomorrow, before sunset

fussychica · 05/01/2019 18:53

Did it today. I hate it, the room always looks so bare for a few days in til I get used to it.

wowfudge · 05/01/2019 18:57

Currently looking at a very bare living room, but I reorganised the boxes everything is stored in and it all fits much better. Also found the lights I usually put up in the kitchen diner. Wreath staying on front door until tomorrow.

12th Night, 5 January is always the day I take mine down.

There is some discussion about 12th Night going into the 6th, but I have always gone by 5th as that is what my family have always done.

Witchend · 05/01/2019 19:03

I was always told that if you left the decorations up past twelfth night then the hobgoblins took them down.
I left it to them last year. Boy, do we have slack hobgoblins round here.

This year, I'm wondering whether just to leave them up. After all, they go up again in about 11 months time. Wink

hazeyjane · 05/01/2019 19:09

Oh dear....ours are coming down on Weds, as I have a day off and the kids will be at school, so they will be gone when they get home. If the world implodes it's my fault. Sorry.

OrcinusOrca · 05/01/2019 19:13

Before epiphany here

ThanosSavedMe · 06/01/2019 13:31

I want the decorations back up. It looks so bare and empty! Miss my pretty fairy lights

Ours come down today.

The cheese and chocolate mountain will be hanging around a bit longer though, as we couldn't possibly polish it all off in the next few hours

figelnarage · 06/01/2019 13:46

12th night is 5th, epiphany is 6th

drspouse · 06/01/2019 13:49

Just came down except the small nativity which is up till Candlemas.
