I’ve had a look and there seems to be confusion of whether the decorations should come down on 5th it 6th. So what do you do in your family?

But aren't they supposed to come down on twelfth night, before epiphany?

MrsJayy · 05/01/2019 11:35

I wanted mine down on thursday but Dh is weirdly adamant it comes down 12 days after Christmas (tomorrow) it ia driving me potty but I have no energy to argue with him.

potatoscone · 05/01/2019 11:57

31st December. I don't want last years Christmas decorations up when I start a new year.

I’m not a superstitious person either so am confused as to why this is bothering me this year!

It's not a superstition, it's religion!

If you don't know that it doesn't matter when you take them down. Religious people who take the tree down 12th night will know.

My decs basically are up for December. That's it. No religion here.

FreezerBird · 05/01/2019 12:02

Like a previous poster, I see tonight as the last night, so will enjoy the tree lights this evening and take tree down tomorrow without the lights going back on.

The Magi arrive at the crib tomorrow (Epiphany) and the crib often stays out until Candlemas.

DonaldDucksTowel · 05/01/2019 12:09

I’m taking all of the other decs down today but the tree comes down tomorrow

ScribblyGum · 05/01/2019 12:09

12th Night starts tonight at sunset. 12th Day (Epiphany) is on the 6th. Night proceeds Day for these festival days.
My understanding of the tradition is that all decorations should be down before 12th night begins, hence why I am shouting at my dds to get their arses off YouTube and attend to their fecking tree.

We usually throw a big party on 12th night to celebrate the end of the festive season but have all succumbed to the lurgy. We will however ceremonially burn all the greenery outside as the sun sets.

In Rome when I lived there, La Befana, an old lady riding on her broomstick, with a sack of presents for children on her back, followed the three kings to the stable, on the eve of Epiphany, so the night of the 5th, then. She also brought lumps of coal for naughty childrenShock But it was sweet coal, so that was OK thenSmile
The children had their presents when they woke up on the 6th - and it was back to school the next day and the christmas door wreaths, trees, decorations etc. were taken down.

AviatorShades · 05/01/2019 12:13

ScribbyGum, my Epiphany Party was a fixture, too!

Littlelambpeep · 05/01/2019 12:14

I have all the tree and big stuff g9ne since new years day but have left fairy lights on windowsill and nice tablecloth / centrepiece on fining table. Will get rid after Sunday dinner so 3 or so.

TowerRingInferno · 05/01/2019 12:32

It night it had to be before sunset on the 6th (but could be earlier). They key thing was not to be after the 6th,

Mine have come down today as it’s more convenient.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 05/01/2019 13:44

In our house it's generally the weekend after new year whenever that may fall and no later than the 6th. So they're coming down today.

dementedpixie · 05/01/2019 14:58

I took my outside lights down today and moved my wee outside tree round to the back garden. Looks bare now

Peridot1 · 05/01/2019 15:05

I’m liking those who indicate I can leave the tree up tonight! I always thought it was the 6th it all had to be down by. We have just done kitchen/dining/sitting area. DH has unplugged the outside lights but not taken them down yet. I’m about to do the hallway.

Will leave sitting room tree etc till tomorrow. The nativity set is in there so makes sense!

pleasegotowork · 05/01/2019 15:09

Whenever you want but here (Ireland) it's the 6th of January, Feast of the Epiphany and also Nollag na mBan (Women's Christmas.)

Peridot1 · 05/01/2019 15:40

That’s probably where I get the 6th pleasegotowork - I’m Irish. British DH pointed out that tonight is 12thnight.

Hallway almost done.

Definitely leaving tree etc till tomorrow.

Does that mean I can have Baileys tonight? I think it does.

pleasegotowork · 05/01/2019 16:03

O definitely you need to have a Baileys tonight. And two tomorrow night for Nollag na mBan.

figelnarage · 05/01/2019 16:12

Took mine down today as was having a clean anyway but would have been tomorrow by the latest.

sue51 · 05/01/2019 16:17

12th night so this evening for us.

pleasegotowork · 05/01/2019 17:33

But is 12th night not tomorrow?

dementedpixie · 05/01/2019 17:35

12th night is tonight

RoseMartha · 05/01/2019 17:35

We took ours down on the second but traditionally i think its something like the fifth.

user1457017537 · 05/01/2019 17:50

House looks so bare!

Thesearmsofmine · 05/01/2019 17:53

Taking ours down tonight. Usually I feel sad but I will be glad this year as the children were desperate have them on 1st December so it feels like we’ve had them forever.

needsleepzzz · 05/01/2019 17:54

Came down New Year’s Day so all sorted before return to work
