Japan - Fried runny eggs with boiled rice?

I watched a little of the Japanese animation From up on Poppy Hill by Miyazaki. In one scene breakfast is being served and a fried runny egg is served with boiked rice. Is that something people would actually have?

OP posts:

Erm no. Just an explanation of my experience. Did you mean to be so rude and create something out of nothing?

Retee · 05/01/2019 17:26

Whoever said food brings people together is a clearly a liar! Wink

WendyCope · 05/01/2019 17:28

?? It's just that Spinach pizza with an egg is my fave pizza in pizza express. I thought it was very common, I was no way being rude Hmm

Had one in Exeter the other week, hardly 'out there'

Happy for your experience.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 05/01/2019 17:29

I've just had a big bowl of bibimbap for dinner. One of my faves with pork and greens.

WendyCope · 05/01/2019 17:30

Anyway, back to the OP, yes, I have lived and eaten in Rome, Madrid, London, Montreal and Paris and I think an egg with a carb is totally normal.

leaveby10 · 05/01/2019 17:34

I think the op was probably more surprised that rice was a normal thing for breakfast rather than the surprise that egg and rice would go together. i mean egg fried rice has been around in the UK for yonks - but rice for breakfast - not so much. I know Kedgeree - but it's not an everyday breakfast for most.

WendyCope · 05/01/2019 17:36

Well, it is for most who live in Asia! Just like toast is for us!

Oorwulliesbucket · 05/01/2019 17:39

My dad used to crack an egg into his mince and tatties, yum x

Flambola · 05/01/2019 17:40

My Thai mum eats rice with a fried egg on top quite often.

Triglesoffy · 05/01/2019 17:54

We went to Prezzo today and DD had a pizza with an egg on top. DH was cross because he wanted one too but when we asked him if he’d ordered a pizza with an egg on top or if he’d actually asked the waiter if he could have an extra egg on top he said no so what does he expect?

We didn’t have rice as I didn’t fancy a risotto but I should have remembered this thread and ordered risotto and asked for an egg on top then I could have taken a photo and shared it on here.

GenderIsAPrison · 05/01/2019 18:26

I be just ordered some of that Japanese seaweed/sesame/chilli seasoning for rice 🍚 now. Yum. Fast comfort food.

Can’t believe a light hearted thread comparing and contrasting world cuisines have been accused of racism by the professionally offended.

LittleBearPad · 05/01/2019 18:35

Goodness there are some hard work people on this thread.

Wags does a dish which includes a fried egg on rice.

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 05/01/2019 18:38

Oh goodness Wendy I didn’t say that pizza with an egg on was out there and crazy, I was saying that I personally hadn’t seen or fancied one before but it was actually amazing. I didn’t eat cheesecake until I was 20 because i thought that cheddar and cake was a weird mix, so I’m hardly the best judge of food.

But the egg pizza thing was yet more proof that eggs make everything amazing*

*apart from this shit show of a thread, obviously Grin

MissSusanScreams · 05/01/2019 18:39

@GenderIsAPrison

Do you mean togarashi seasoning? It is the best. I basically put it on everything now.

It is my shameful middle class secret 😁

GenderIsAPrison · 05/01/2019 18:44

It’s called furikake seasoning I think (spelling?)

I found it in Ocado, it’s in my basket for my next shop....😀

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 05/01/2019 18:55

Furikake is amazing. The kids often eat that on rice with nothing else. Togarashi is the spicy one isn’t it? Again, the kids will put it on anything and everything! We’re having oyako don tonight (chicken and egg on rice).

Ooh.. egg drop soup is really good too - beat eggs then pour them into a consommé type soup. Lovely flavor and super fluffy egg. Yu

MissSusanScreams · 05/01/2019 19:03

@DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred

Ah, yes. I was getting them mixed up. Waitrose sell premade togarashi. I have to keep stocking up.

Am not a massive fan of eggs to be honest. I always struggled with oyakodonburi.

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 05/01/2019 19:15

Yes, that one would be tricky if you’re not fond of eggs! Smile

Waitrose stock a lovely Japanese curry (s&b golden curry). It’s quite mild and sweet, different to Indian curry but just as delicious. Definitely recommend it!

GenderIsAPrison · 05/01/2019 19:17

Oooo , is that like the Katsu curry curry sauce?

interestingdays · 05/01/2019 19:17

GrinGrin

DaphneFanshaw · 05/01/2019 19:21

This thread has cracked me up, you guys are a bunch of comedi-hens.

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 05/01/2019 19:23

Yes it’s really similar I think! I was idly wondering the other day if I could make a Katsu curry cheat by cooking frozen southern fried chicken, slicing it onto rice and pouring over the golden curry sauce. With egg of course Grin Did not have the energy for making it from scratch! Not sure if the seasoning would clash with the curry but I may have to try it!

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 05/01/2019 19:25

Really want good egg drop soup now 😛

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 05/01/2019 19:25

Daphne I am eggstatic to see a near name twin on this thread! Grin

DaphneFanshaw · 05/01/2019 19:31
