Japan - Fried runny eggs with boiled rice?

dudsville · 05/01/2019 01:34

I watched a little of the Japanese animation From up on Poppy Hill by Miyazaki. In one scene breakfast is being served and a fried runny egg is served with boiked rice. Is that something people would actually have?

I’m a regular shopper at the foreign food store .... which is basically full of Western food-stuff, from the US all the way to Russia. Yet, I’ve never been offended by this. Maybe I should start?

You misunderstood the point I was making. I’m not remotely offended with the shop selling different types of Asian foods under one roof. My quip was simply in response to a pp saying that Korean, Japanese, Chinese foods were basically the same as they shared some ingredients.

Chicken katsu is deep fried breaded chicken, doesn’t make it kfc.

@RubyRubyBaby

You’re being a bit precious about this. Japan, Korea and China are three countries link by shared history (lots of conflict) and migration.

The current inhabitants of most of Japan migrated from the Korean Peninsula, displacing the original tribes to Hokkaido.

They are a similar as we are to the French and Germans I.e- quite similar but different at the same time. It’s not racist to point this out.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 05/01/2019 16:18

Op, have you seen Japanology series on youtube? They are half hour programmes on all sorts of things, lots on food! They're quite old I think, found them by accident when watching something urrelated. The presenter is called Peter Barukan, think that's how you spell it anyway. He's got a lovely calming voice too.

Not being precious. Just backing a pp’s point that’s all. But thanks for the history lesson!

RubyRubyBaby · 05/01/2019 16:27

The current inhabitants of most of Japan migrated from the Korean Peninsula, displacing the original tribes to Hokkaido.

BTW this is incorrect.

PineapplePower · 05/01/2019 16:31

The current inhabitants of most of Japan migrated from the Korean Peninsula

This is what they are taught in Japanese schools. Jomon displaced by Yayoi settlers from the Korean peninsula.

PineapplePower · 05/01/2019 16:35

Adding, of course, that this doesn’t make it true, just that it’s widely believed.

MissSusanScreams · 05/01/2019 16:37

@RubyRubyBaby

No, it is correct. Just as PineapplePower has pointed out.

DNA analysis of Japanese people shows as mix of Jomon and Yoyoi DNA. Being an island nation Japan shares many similarities with the U.K. and one of those is that it is culturally and linguistically influenced by the neighbours it shares sea boarders with.

One of the many Chinese influences is the kanji used to write. Hence why there are four alphabet systems in Japan: kanji (Chinese character), hiragana (Japanese character), katakana (simplifies hiragana for foreign words) and romanji (the western alphabet).

You don’t seem to know a lot about Japan.

Chicken Katsu curry being an adaption of the British interpretation of Indian curry!

RubyRubyBaby · 05/01/2019 16:40

No Susan, it is a theory. Not fact. HTH

RubyRubyBaby · 05/01/2019 16:43

And just to add that Yoyoi is a mixture of ethnicity. Whilst they may have made the journey from the Korean Peninsula, that is likely to be a matter of logistics ie it being closer to Japan. Not that the Yoyoi are Korean as such. But thanks for the patronising comment. Says more about you tbh.

PineapplePower · 05/01/2019 16:43

No Susan, it is a theory. Not fact. HTH

It’s a pretty solid one, though.

RubyRubyBaby · 05/01/2019 16:44

Read my post above Pineapple.

PineapplePower · 05/01/2019 16:45

The current inhabitants of most of Japan migrated from the Korean Peninsula, displacing the original tribes to Hokkaido

Also, she did say Korean Peninsula, not that they were Korean. We’re not talking about the Japanese royal family after all Wink

CottonSock · 05/01/2019 16:46

Can we get back to the food now?
I love an egg on anything, and don't care how it's labelled. E.g. pot noodle plus egg, soup plus egg, rice plus egg. Yum

shpoot · 05/01/2019 16:46

Did someone just get offended over rice 😂

WendyCope · 05/01/2019 16:50

I lived in Rome, so know the proper way to cook spaghetti carbonara. I.E no cream, just eggs stirred in the pasta at the end, with lots of pepper.

I live in Spain now, rice with a tomato sauce and an egg on top is standard.

All the same thing, no? Why the shock?

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 05/01/2019 16:51

Ruby where do you believe Japanese people originate from? I would have thought that people are descended from Jomon people and Yayoi, with Yayoi having emigrated from China and Korea through the Korean peninsula/land bridge existing at that time. However, it was a long time ago and I wasn't there so cannot confirm. Asked (East Asian) dh who said "get off mumsnet, I want to go to sainsburys. Inconclusive.

Dimsumlosesum · 05/01/2019 16:52

Aaaaanyway......back to rice

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 05/01/2019 16:53

Pineapple As everyone knows, the emperors are descendants of real life actual gods. True fact. Grin

Eggs on everything make life wonderful. Even ordered a pizza with a fried egg in the centre to see how awful it would be.

It was fucking amazing.

MissSusanScreams · 05/01/2019 16:56

@DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred

👏🏻 Brilliant post.

Ruby has dug a hole for themselves and is now trying to brazen it out. Why is it so hard to accept that Japanese cooking and culture has lots of influences from China and Japan and lots of popular dishes that western people see as Japanese are originally from those other countries.

I’m sure Japanese people couldn’t give a stuff. I love gyoza (which no one does correctly in the U.K.) which is essentially steamed dumplings. A feature of many Asian cuisines. Or is it racist to point that out?

MissSusanScreams · 05/01/2019 16:58

Also, I once ordered a pizza in the Pizza Express in Harajuku and it came with hen’s egg on top and fish eggs under the cheese and that was a lesson to me to actual learn Japanese so I could read menues properly.

Fin

RubyRubyBaby · 05/01/2019 17:14

Susan

You have spectacularly failed to get my original point. But you go ahead with your condescending attitude. It shows your ignorance for what it is.

WendyCope · 05/01/2019 17:19

I thought an egg in the middle of a pizza wasn't a rare thing Hmm
