Japan - Fried runny eggs with boiled rice?

I watched a little of the Japanese animation From up on Poppy Hill by Miyazaki. In one scene breakfast is being served and a fried runny egg is served with boiked rice. Is that something people would actually have?

Alright, I’ve just ordered Thai basil fried rice for lunch. Should be here in about an hour. Darn you Mumsnet! I was trying to reduce food delivery spending this year. Well, at least I’ll have tons of leftovers. :)

I don’t see it as racist. It’s Asian cuisine which covers many countries and Japanese food is very mainstream in South Korea too. There are a lot of similarities in the food .

Lots of people have gone on to mention different dishes they’ve had in Asia that include an egg. It’s a chat forum Hmm and you have a poor understanding of racism if you consider the discussion of similarities and differences between food across Asia if you consider that racist.

You can have a pan of (leftover) poatoes, ham and eggs cracked over the whole lot and then fried in Westfalia (Bauernfrühstück) amongst of course other regions with a similar traditional food supply - you can add vegetables, too.

That’s like calling all European food “Western” cuisine. Well, yes it is but I think most chefs would be a bit Hmm at the idea of French/Italian/British being lumped together in that way!

It ISNT racist though. Korea, japan, China, all use similar ingredients and have a similar diet. Nobody is insulting or generalising either. It’s simply a conversation about recipes and menus. And many of the specialist ingredients for all these can usually be bought at one shop (see pic attached).

Mediterranean cuisine covers many countries too.

I'm Scottish and sometimes when we have stovies, we will do a fried egg on top. I think the idea of some form of a big load of starchy carbs with a bit of cheap easy protein chucked in must be kinda a universal thing really? No need to get too het up about it all. Grin

Hmm. I may well be in overprotective mother mode then, and for that I apologise Ruby and thank you for the perspective Umbongo Smile I’m probably over sensitive to it after a horrible year for ds at school being racially bullied and the school not dealing with it. The n word and p word heavily sanctioned but call someone “chinkychong” or “slitty eyes” and it’s just playground banter apparently. Ds has been so upset.)

Aaaanyway! Runny egg on rice is amazing, but op I’m more amazed that you got through Poppy Hill without being traumatized Shock

Well this thread has moved on a bit! I had a fruitless search for Korean food and ended up with a salt beef sandwich and an Ethiopian beef stew with lentils and split peas - both very tasty but my craving lingers on...

Also, i don't get the offence of saying it's all types of asian food. I would never get offended with someone saying british food is a type of european diet.
You'd have to know very little about food not to realise there are broad simmilarities within all european foods just as there are broad similarities between all asian doods

It’s sweet fried bread, so in East Asia, yeah, I’d totally expect this conversation.

It’s not like many would have extensive experience abroad and would know the regional distinctions of European cuisine. Same as here. In fact, I’d say the average Westerner is far more familiar with global cuisine due to large-scale immigration.

And I’m a regular shopper at the foreign food store .... which is basically full of Western food-stuff, from the US all the way to Russia. Yet, I’ve never been offended by this. Maybe I should start? (Whilst still doing all my shopping there, overpriced cheese be damned)

The Japanese are fairly open about how they adopt recipes from different countries and make them their own.

The hot stone bowls where you cook the the raw eggs with hot rice and kimichi is originally Korean but super popular and fairly unitquitous all over Japan.

Also, most Japanese street and izakiya (pub) food is adapted from Chinese cooking. So yaki soba, raumen and okonomiyaki are more recent ( early 20th century adaptations).

More traditional Japanese food is the stuff cooked at home that you’ll almost never find in Japanese restaurant menus- like natto. Which is fermented soy beans and the thing I disliked most about living in Japan. Fucking surprise natto everywhere.

And bloody anko bean paste.
