Going down to hotel breakfast in PJs and socks

I was at a Holiday Inn recently and an entire family came down to breakfast in PJs and socks. Is this common? I've never seen it before.

Breakfast was in the restaurant so not close to any rooms or anything. I just though it was a bit weird and unhygenic. I might go down to breakfast without make up on or whatever but I'd always get dressed and put shoes on at the very least!

And no staff member requested that they get dressed before enjoying their breakfast?
Very weird thing to do.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2019 20:28

That isn't normal to me but there was a thread about this a while ago and there were mixed opinions.

Roystonv · 01/01/2019 20:31

Awful and very surprised the hotel staff did not have a quiet word. Cannot understand anyone thinking this is acceptable.

I once stayed in a hotel in Gran Canaria where a lot of Scandinavians were staying. They always came down to breakfast in onesies.

FrenchSchnoodle · 01/01/2019 20:34

I would find it very odd and quite common to be honest. It's not a great example that the parents are setting. There are certain behaviours which should be adopted in a restaurant and wearing pjs isn't one of them.

greendale17 · 01/01/2019 20:34

No it is not common. Some people have no self respect or dignity.

Depends on the pyjamas. I’d get arrested for indecency if I tried, not because they’re stunning neglige but because they’re holey, the elastic is going in the waistband, and there’s only one button left in the top.

Wallabyone · 01/01/2019 20:36

I've never seen this before-if I wanted to stay in my nightwear, I'd order room service. It's very odd to go to breakfast in a restaurant in your pyjamas!

treaclesoda · 01/01/2019 20:38

The last hotel I stayed in had notices in several places saying that people in nightclothes would not be allowed to enter the breakfast room and that appropriate attire must be worn.

My husband and I looked at each other like this Confused and said 'who on earth would go to breakfast in a hotel on their pyjamas?'

Obviously we were wrong and people do!

This happened when I stayed at the Randolph in Oxford once, a whole family in PJs, dressing gowns and slippers in the restaurant of a 5-star hotel! I slightly admired them for their “don’t give a fuck” attitude, but mainly I judged.

I’ll probably get flamed but I take my daughter down for breakfast in her pyjamas whenever we’re away.
I’m always fully dressed I have to say but she’s only 4 and has an awful habit of spilling milk everywhere(mostly down herself).
I don’t see the point in dressing her only to have to start again after breakfast.
As soon as she’s old enough to concentrate on eating and not making a mess she’ll be dressed and tidy for breakfast.

WanderingTrolley1 · 01/01/2019 20:55

I’ve done it quite a few times in (4 and 5 star) hotels, and, why not?

FairfaxAikman · 01/01/2019 20:59

As a student I worked in a 5* hotel and "common" behaviour like this was depressingly common.

It's awkward for the staff - especially when the attire isn't entirely decent.

The hotel we stayed at in Barcelona had signs up as you came in from the pool and terrace advising guests that people in swimwear would not be served in the restaurant or indoor bar Shock. Would people seriously get straight out of the pool and go for dinner?

giftsonthebrain · 01/01/2019 21:01

Skiing holiday and wearing their base layer??

MorningsEleven · 01/01/2019 21:04

That's the dream of my life but DH won't let me.

I went on a tiger safari in a really remote part of India and some guests did this. The poor staff, all from the local villages, didn’t know where to look. These guests were all rich, retired types who carried on like they were reliving the last days of Raj, and they treated the “natives” accordingly, barking orders at them. It was mortifying.

Belindabelle · 01/01/2019 21:08

Recently stayed at Gleneagles hotel and loads of people did this.

Oldraver · 01/01/2019 21:21

At a hotel for a wedding and several guests did this...I was really surprised

Happygolucky009 · 01/01/2019 21:24

I did it years ago, overslept and if I had got dressed would have missed breakfast! Lots of judgey looks but I was too young to give a damn😂

Bbub · 01/01/2019 21:26

I was really surprised when my friend wore her white disposable hotel slippers down to bfast but she has nothing on these lot in their full pjs!

This morning though, where I was staying, i saw someone at the breakfast buffet briefly wash their hands using the drinks dispenser Shock and it got me thinking about hotel breakfast etiquette.

Oh and i watched someone take my toast out of the bottom of the toast machine too as I didnt get there in time..minor, but still an offence in my eyes

CrispbuttyNo1 · 01/01/2019 21:26

“I did it years ago, overslept and if I had got dressed would have missed breakfast! “

How long does it take you to get dressed? I can do it in under 20 seconds

Bbub · 01/01/2019 21:27

*took out for themself

percypeppers · 01/01/2019 21:29

No, I wouldn't and I'd think they were chavs.

ZenNudist · 01/01/2019 21:29

That's nothing today I saw two young ish girls eating in McDonald's in their dressing gowns. Then I spotted a man walking down the street in Batman pyjamas. He was carrying a few plates and things like he was coming from somebody else's house and go back to his own. But still how bizarre.
