Going down to hotel breakfast in PJs and socks

I was at a Holiday Inn recently and an entire family came down to breakfast in PJs and socks. Is this common? I've never seen it before.

Breakfast was in the restaurant so not close to any rooms or anything. I just though it was a bit weird and unhygenic. I might go down to breakfast without make up on or whatever but I'd always get dressed and put shoes on at the very least!

I think ‘orange walk on’ may be referencing an Orange Order march.

comebacksoonsusan · 02/01/2019 10:10

So, a march of people?

wanderings · 02/01/2019 10:52

Here's an enigma. At my university hall of residence, there was a "no bare feet in the dining room" rule, because it might be offensive to people eating. However, although they didn't wear pyjamas, lots of students wore flip flops, especially to breakfast. There was lots of debate about if this was any better than bare feet! (The huge fluffy animal slippers were also popular - even the boys liked wearing them!)

AmIthatbloodycold · 02/01/2019 10:55

Yes, I meant the kind of orange walk referred to in the link

Unlike Marguerita, my experience of the types of people who attend these is not that they are straight laced, more that they don't know how to behave in normal, 21st century society. And I'm happy to judge

Imagine semen or wee dribbles on pjs, 8 hours of night sweat.

Why on earth would your PJs have 'wee dribbles' on them Hmm? And I presume if you had semen on your clothes you would change them before going to breakfast, the same way you would if you had mud on your regular day clothes.

calpop · 02/01/2019 11:54

gross

PlugUgly1980 · 02/01/2019 11:57

Small children in PJs I think is fine, especially if they're anything like mine and too big for a high chair but slightly too little for a big chair at the table so often end up wearing at least some of their breakfast so I try and keep their clothes clean until we've at least made it out somewhere for the day! But as adults we always get showered and dressed before going to breakfast.

sandgrown If I forget to put the bins out on collection day I put a really long coat over my dressing gown to run out and hope none of the neighbours see me!

Almost every week I see a woman do this as I drive past on my way to work. The bend in the road means I catch her dead on with my headlights!

The only two things I know about her life are that she has a long white dressing gown and a very fancy chandelier light in the garage.

Bumblebee39 · 02/01/2019 12:30

I've worn pjs to hotel breakfast and would again
I normally put a bra, proper shoes and a jumper/cardi over the top but am much more comfortable in my pj bottoms

GreenTulips · 02/01/2019 12:32

All about you

DustyMaiden · 02/01/2019 12:33

Go to a spa hotel and you can wear your dressing gown all day.

Bumblebee39 · 02/01/2019 12:34

I honestly have never considered that anyone else would give a shit tbh

Bumblebee39 · 02/01/2019 12:34

@DustyMaiden

Exactly why would I dress for breakfast if I'm going to spend the rest of the day in swimmers and a robe?

AmIthatbloodycold · 02/01/2019 12:38

Thanks I love pixie I think so

My opinion is based on experience of these orange walks.

ivykaty44 · 02/01/2019 12:39

I’ve seen this in hotels, motorway service stations & supermarkets. I don’t want to do this but can’t see how other wear night wear affects my being in the same place whilst others do this - apart from amusement, as it’s unusual

A t shirt with fuck off written on it I do find offensive

BitOutOfPractice · 02/01/2019 12:39

I'd love to do this but I wouldn't.

I'd love to go home from the gym in my pyjamas as well but never have

I need to let my inner-pleb out more Grin

OllyBJolly · 02/01/2019 12:44

In a Hilton in Dublin last year and about 50% of breakfasters were in their PJs.

I was pretty aghast, but even more so at the PP who saw It at Gleneagles. Gleneagles?!

Ribbonsonabox · 02/01/2019 12:59

I take my children down to breakfast in their pjs as they are both under 4 and theres no point in them getting their clothes for the day covered in food! I dont wear pjs myself to breakfast but I dont get properly dressed as if I were going out. I put clothes on but not shoes makeup and jewelry etc...
We certainly are not chavs by even the widest of definitions!

Ribbonsonabox · 02/01/2019 13:02

And I'd certainly never bat an eyelid at people in pjs anywhere tbh... life is too short. As long as they aren't covered in offensive slogans or have their genitals hanging out then it's fair enough as far as I'm concerned. People on mumsnet are so uptight sometimes... you must waste a tonne of energy getting wound up by mild differences in the way other people behave.

calpop · 02/01/2019 13:34

Put tracksuit bottoms on instead of PJ bottoms

I've a couple of caftans I picked up on my travels - one of those, a bandana for my hair and a pair of dangly earrings, some fancy flipflops and ta-da! enter the Queen of ShebaGrin

BitOutOfPractice · 02/01/2019 15:15

@AviatorShades I like your style!

Bumblebee39 · 02/01/2019 17:20

I don't think this is a class thing tbh, the more money the hotel costs the more prevalent the pyjama wearing in my experience. Especially if it's a spa or has a pool, the rules end up relaxing a lot in the morning although everyone is dressed nicely by the evening.
