Going down to hotel breakfast in PJs and socks

I was at a Holiday Inn recently and an entire family came down to breakfast in PJs and socks. Is this common? I've never seen it before.

Breakfast was in the restaurant so not close to any rooms or anything. I just though it was a bit weird and unhygenic. I might go down to breakfast without make up on or whatever but I'd always get dressed and put shoes on at the very least!

I’ve only ever seen young kids do it (with parents fully dressed) which I think is acceptable.

I also once saw a hen party come to breakfast in a mixture of pyjamas and their clothes from the night before but it just made me smile rather than judge them Grin

MissMalice · 01/01/2019 21:31

Why do you even care?

CowJumping · 01/01/2019 21:35

Naff.

I’m assuming maybe they’d never stayed in an hotel before and didn’t know how to behave.

Good manners are generally about consideration for others. Some people have no understanding of this.

hmmhohmmm · 01/01/2019 21:35

I'm mainly just jealous when I see people in their pjs at breakfast. Wish everyone did it so I could 😅

HardAsSnails · 01/01/2019 21:37

I often go down in 'loungewear' and usually just socks on my feet, I had no idea this would be frowned on.

EdtheBear · 01/01/2019 21:47

Pjs not the done thing beyond the age of 6 or 7.

Skiing base layers I can understand, its not really much different to gym wear.

But not adults in pjs.

somewhereovertherain · 01/01/2019 21:48

Stay in holiday inns loads never seen this. But nothing surprises me.

ForalltheSaints · 01/01/2019 22:07

Not acceptable. I hope that the OP mentions this and the lack of action on a hotel review site.

Lozz22 · 01/01/2019 22:12

Maybe if I was in a hotel because of an emergency and the only thing I was wearing at the time of needing to go to the hotel was pjs but other than that no. I like to have a shower and wash my hair before I go for breakfast and put clean clothes on first if I'm in a hotel. That said however I do have zero shame in going outside for a cig or to the vending machine in my pjs and slippers on a night time during my annual stays in premier inn.

Consolidateyourloins · 01/01/2019 22:13

My current pyjamas look like floral joggers with a blue long sleeved top, you'd be hard pressed to know they were pyjamas when teamed with a fleece.

mortifiedmama · 01/01/2019 22:36

I wish it were acceptable and is one reason I dislike staying in hotels. I don't like having to get up and dressed before breakfast on holiday!

TheBigBangRocks · 01/01/2019 23:00

Takes seconds to get dressed, quite why you wouldn't to go in a public place is beyond me. Akin to going to the shops or school run in nightwear.

Grandadwasthatyou · 01/01/2019 23:01

Saw this in a 4 star hotel in Birmingham recently ( it may have been me who started a thread then). I just don't understand why people can't be bothered to have a bit of respect and common decency and just get dressed.
I am embarrassed if the neighbours see me putting something in the bin with my dressing gown on.

InAPreviousLife · 01/01/2019 23:03

I've wandered a hotel in PJs at 3am before now searching for a vending machine but would never rock up for breakfast in them.

However we have had a couple of messy nights away with work that have seen me rock up for breakfast when they open at 6am fully dressed from the night before with my partners in crime but fully dressed is fully dressed Grin

ilovepixie · 01/01/2019 23:10

I work in a shop in a sea side resort and I've served people in wet suits, one young man just wearing a towel round his waist and a man in his 60's wearing normal clothes and shoes except he wasn't wearing any trousers! He was carrying them over his arm!

Timeforachange68 · 01/01/2019 23:16

On checking out of a hotel in London last week we met a chap who I assumed was returning from breakfast with bare feet we thought that was strange walking where everyone else walked in their outdoor footwear!

Peakypolly · 01/01/2019 23:20

Slippers I suppose are quite acceptable, I might start adopting that, but nightwear? No way.

KenAdams · 02/01/2019 00:41

GC this was also in Oxford. I wonder if it's a thing there 😂.

Slippers I get, especially if youve only brought heels with you or something, but how difficult is it to throw a pair of jeans on? It wasn't at the end of the breakfast service either.

To those that do it, can I ask why? Would you go for lunch or dinner in your PJs?

I imagine the people who do this don't know any better? On the feral side, like the cousin Eddie and his family in Griswolds films?

endofthelinefinally · 02/01/2019 01:46

The wierdest thing I ever saw was an entire Chinese tour group all dressed in old fashioned stripy men's pyjamas ( they were mostly women).
They must have brought them with them because they looked circa 1930. They turned up later at the pool and actually got in to swim, still wearing the pjs but with the addition of the free plastic shower hats from the hotel rooms.
My normally loud dcs were stunned into complete silence.

ReaganSomerset · 02/01/2019 01:47

I haven't done this myself (I was raised with a crippling fear of 'What people will think!!!') but have seen it done and don't judge people for it. Maybe some people have ocd/autism and have a specific routine they follow that involves dressing after breakfast? Maybe they didn't fancy a shower yet? Maybe it's more comfortable that way and they don't care what you think lucky sods?

I've only ever seen it once in a hotel in Lanarkshire

There was a huge orange walk on and I'm sure that's why they were staying. We just thought they weren't used to hotels

lonalsland · 02/01/2019 02:41

I'd straightaway assume they'd never stayed in a hotel before. Then my attention would probably be back on whatever I was reading.

It's if you're on a long stay and they do it for a second time that would make me pause for a moment 🤔

BeardedMum · 02/01/2019 02:47

I see men (always men) in bathrobes and slippers at breakfast in the hotels I stay at sometimes and they are quite posh hotels too. Its really odd behavious like they missed a major etiquette memo.
