Do you prefer male or female vocals in music?

Generally speaking that is. I was having this discussion with a friend prompted by her, and I'm curious If you have a preference which do you prefer?

I prefer male vocalists because I mostly listen to metal/industrial metal and hard rock and for those genres I favour relatively deep and harsh tones.

Female, definitely

AGHHHH · 01/01/2019 18:01

Female. Male vocals can be wonderful too but generally can't 'go there', and I love my divas!

RaspberryRipple1963 · 01/01/2019 18:10

I prefer male vocalists, but then my favourite music is very heavy rock/heavy metal,so I suppose that tallies.

Female. I like songs to have a decent narrative I can relate to.

IndigoSpritz · 01/01/2019 18:31

I have no preference but I think it's a matter of horses for courses. For example, I couldn't imagine Noddy Holder singing Send In The Clowns any more than Judy Collins screeching Cum On, Feel The Noyze.

Kezzie200 · 01/01/2019 18:41

My favourite vocals are where male and female are complementary but so different. Like Deacon Blue. Or the girl that sang with the Style Council.

Kikita · 01/01/2019 18:45

I don't think I have a preference - it does depend on the genre to some extent though.

Looking at my most-listened-to artists though, it's overwhelmingly men. I guess that's probably not because I prefer men though, but rather because there are just far more male singers in popular music.

Yulebealrite · 01/01/2019 18:46

Male

PissOffPeppa · 01/01/2019 18:51

Male, or at least a strong, fairly deep female voice. I listen to a lot of rock too.

sunsalutations · 01/01/2019 18:51

Male, without a doubt. Especially when they sing about love and heartache. Makes me feel quite emotional Grin

Moonstoned · 01/01/2019 19:11

What IndigoSpritz said. Though I now quite fancy a Noddy Holder version of Send In the Clowns. Or Katherine Jenkins doing Pour Some Sugar On Me.Grin

CrispbuttyNo1 · 01/01/2019 19:15

Generally male, and like a previous poster I prefer rock music. Having said that, some female artists have voices that I love. Stevie nicks, lady gaga (after watching Star is Born I was amazed by her vocals having not really noticed them before), Pink, and hazel o’Conner.

RatRolyPoly · 01/01/2019 19:22

For general listening I don't know if I have a preference, but anytime I'm asked to contribute a song to a playlist it's always a female vocalist. Equally when I used to dance all my podium/stage choices were female vocals. Perhaps it's songs I associate with myself that I prefer women's voices on, which I suppose makes sense.

GlitterPixie · 01/01/2019 19:23

Female

Daisychainsandglitter · 01/01/2019 19:26

Definitely male but like previous posters I listen to mainly rock and metal which in my opinion is more suited to a male voice.

Rockbird · 01/01/2019 19:29

Female mostly

rightreckoner · 01/01/2019 19:30

Male. I really don’t like high pitched folky voices like Joni Mitchell or the dreadful breathy voices that are in vogue these days like Ellie Goulding.

JarlBalgruuf · 01/01/2019 19:40

I listen to more male voices, but then like pp I am quite into rock and metal. Although I tend to prefer metal with a good mix of screaming and nice vocals (think System of a Down) or with no screaming.

That being said, I usually go for voices that are a bit distinctive rather than because they are male or female.

mangomama91 · 01/01/2019 19:44

I have the exact same answer as you op, before I even read the whole of your op that is exactly what I was going to reply!

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 19:44

Male voices. It's a sex thing. I find male voices more attractive sexually and rock music is about sex.

Having said that, as a feminist I support and value female voices but it is all intellectual.

Hazlenutpie · 01/01/2019 19:46

Definitely male. I can't stand women who screech. I do like First Aid Kit.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 01/01/2019 19:53

It depends on the vocalist. My favourite is a girl or woman now I suppose, I've been a supporter of her since she was 6 but in general I find male voices more soothing.

JacquesHammer · 01/01/2019 19:55

Male - into rock/metal

GrouchyKiwi · 01/01/2019 20:00

Generally male voices because they're more in my range (I'm a contralto) and I listen to music to sing along.

But I much prefer a female soprano to a boy when it comes to classical music.

FissionChips · 01/01/2019 20:05

Male voices. Ville Valo’s voice is perfect.
