Kitchen gadgets that never get used

I was tidying out my kitchen cupboards on Sunday and found this (hope the picture is attached!) for making coconut pyramids. My mum bought it years ago, god knows how many given that Lakeland dropped the plastics part of their name 22 years ago! She never opened it. I then took it and I’ve never opened it! It sits in the cupboard waiting for the day that I need to make coconut pyramids...

Has anyone else got any “must have” kitchen gadgets that have never been used but are still sat waiting for that just in case moment?

Might be being simple, but when do you make coconut pyramids? Is this a seventies dish?

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 01/01/2019 14:49

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1215642/golden-coconut-pyramids

to get them in shape I assume?

Southwest12 · 01/01/2019 15:23

I have no idea when coconut pyramids were a thing. Probably was the late 70s early 80s.

The pasta machine Hmm

Soup maker

Juicer

Bread maker. Pasta machine. Juicer. Smoothie maker. Basically any tool that’s specialised to do a particular task and is too much of a faff to get out and put away again. If it’s large enough to need putting away at the back of a distant cupboard you will never get it out again! And if it’s a hassle to clean you will never use it again after the first time. Tools that get used regularly are those that have a variety of uses and are easy to clean and store.

Oh I haven't had a coconut pyramid since the 1960s! Actually that recipe looks very easy for children to make. My grandmother used to use an egg cup.
Most of my gadgets are used, though I do only buy things I know I will use. Slow cooker, bread maker, deep fryer and food processor - all have been used in the last couple of weeks.

The coffee maker is the one gadget that never gets used.

Pasta Maker ?

One of those things that seems a nice idea - and indeed, there's a fascination to making your own (it really is so much nicer).

The problem is it's a massive ballache which the difference doesn't justify.

Now I know why we never had fresh pasta growing up ...

ShortandSweet96 · 01/01/2019 16:09

Not really a must have but insure we all have one.

A bastard garlic crusher.

It's more effort cleaning the damn thing than just chopping up a garlic, it also leaves half the garlic behind! A simple knife and chopping board is just as, if not easier!

onlyhereforthefood · 01/01/2019 16:54

I made coconut pyramids in the early nineties with my Nan, I'd forgotten all about them.

My unused gadget is the espresso machine, so much faff when I need my coffee quickly!

twilightcafe · 01/01/2019 17:00

Ice cream maker. I think we've used it twice.

cricketmum84 · 01/01/2019 17:03

Tassimo has gathered dust for the last 12 months.

Soup maker I used twice before I went back to land and a stick blender.

We've had a huge multi function kitchen blender/smoothie/chopper all singing all dancing machine in the garage since 2009. It's been out of its box twice.

cricketmum84 · 01/01/2019 17:04

Oh ffs my phone!!

PANS not land!!

YouBoggleMyMind · 01/01/2019 17:04

We got given a flavour injector for meat... it's still in the packet...

papayasareyum · 01/01/2019 17:09

We have a coffee machine which is used daily, a smoothie maker (the same, used all the time) a food processor (25 years old and used very regularly)..the ones we never use are in the cupboards. I need to get rid of them really. We have a bread maker, steamer, chocolate fountain and never ever use those

IJustLostTheGame · 01/01/2019 17:10

The garlic crusher, it's crap. I use a parmesan grater now.
A cake pop maker. It only did a quarter of the batter at a time. It was a bugger to clean and thebcake pops were more cooked on one side than the other. It was easier to buy a cake pop baking tray and use the oven.

Stardustinmyeyes · 01/01/2019 17:11

Ice cream maker, used once. Bean to cup coffee machine is used everyday. I don't own any other gadgets

heebie · 01/01/2019 17:12

Another cake pop maker. I was bought it, used once with the DC, has collected dust ever since.

Stardustinmyeyes · 01/01/2019 17:15

DGRosseti
I didn't eat pasta until I was about 16. I was born the year after the BBC April Fool spaghetti harvest broadcast

Hazlenutpie · 01/01/2019 17:20

Spiraliser, ice-cream maker, juicer.

Southwest12 · 01/01/2019 17:31

I’ve got an unused cake pop maker and pasta maker as well. I might try making pasta at some point, maybe!

Pasta maker. Piece of shit!

Pasta maker. Piece of shit!

?

Ours worked fine ... just it's a little bit "twee". I mean who really makes their own pasta - even in Italy (as my DF noted when I told him ...)

Notso · 01/01/2019 17:49

I feel like anything with maker in the title is destined to unnecessarily fill my cupboards.
