Hotel Chocolat disappointment

SealSong · 31/12/2018 19:44

Bought several boxes of Hotel Chocolat this Christmas as gifts. Having sampled a few (had a box myself also), I am disappointed in them...not the quality I was expecting and decidedly average but very expensive.

Are there any good brands of chocolates out there? Ones that really are delicious?

Also like Chocolate Society bars.

Try Summerbird. It's Danish and somewhat expensive. But I think you can order it on their website. summerbird.dk/chokolade
Now that is luxury chocolate.

Hotel Chocolat hot chocolate (that they serve in their store/café) is one of the best I've ever had. But I tried one of their chocolates and it wasn't nice.

Amazing handmade chocolates!

WhoAmIToDissABrie · 31/12/2018 21:18

I’m sure HC used to taste nice. DH got some for Christmas and it was waxy and horrible.

IfNotNowBernard · 31/12/2018 21:19

Montezuma chocolates are lush. M&S chocs are surprisingly good too.

DailyMailFail101 · 31/12/2018 21:21

Somebody bought Me selection type box of M&S chocolates and I’m surprised how nice they are! Really creamy and rich, not like that crumbly rubbish milk chocolate. I’m always a bit disappointed in hotel chocolat.

Togaandsandals · 31/12/2018 21:22

I am surprised to see some comments on here calling HC v sugary. Thornton’s I do find v sweet but they are of course cheaper. I do though only like certain HC truffles, many am not too fussed over.

My favorutie caramel truffles (if you like caramel) are Holdsworth caramel truffles.

Togaandsandals · 31/12/2018 21:24

To add, I find M & S truffles much sweeter, especially the Swiss collection.

Waves at @AwkwardSquad & @Clevs - I'm also the only person I know (until now) who gets Lauden Chocs!

SheeshazAZ09 · 31/12/2018 21:30

Charbonell et Walker truffles are also nice. Not organic. Also Willie's Milk of the Gods, if you like milk chocolate, is not too sweet but really nice.

scaryteacher · 31/12/2018 21:42

Love Neuhaus, and some Godiva. Galler are good as well. Pierre Marcolini too expensive by far. Leonidas is the go to for boxes to take back to the UK without clearing out the bank account. Corne Port Royale OK, but not my favourites by a long chalk. Some of the local chocolate shops are good, but some do strange flavours and the centres are too soft for me.

E20mom · 31/12/2018 21:45

If you're in London then Paul A Young. Amazing

opinionatedfreak · 31/12/2018 21:56

I find hotel chocolate way too sweet.

From supermarket I buy Monty bojangkes/ booja books and prestat.

If going to a shop I like Paul A Young (salted caramels and marmite truffles especially good) and rococo (I love their chocolate orange disks).

Mail order cocoa mountain are good and I like supporting a small rural business.

I love Rococo rose thins.

viccat · 31/12/2018 23:02

The M&S Belgian Flaked Truffles are really amazing. I got the ones with white, dark and milk chocolate ones.

Togaandsandals · 31/12/2018 23:11

I am going to try out the Lauden chocolates when I next fancy treating myself.

Nousernameforme · 31/12/2018 23:21

Another for Monty bojangles here I got a trio of little boxes for Christmas I swear I actually felt a bit happier after eating one. It was a proper little pick me up that got me through a Christmas day on very little sleep

The best chocolate I've ever had is from Puccini Bomboni in Amsterdam.
