Hotel Chocolat disappointment

Bought several boxes of Hotel Chocolat this Christmas as gifts. Having sampled a few (had a box myself also), I am disappointed in them...not the quality I was expecting and decidedly average but very expensive.

Are there any good brands of chocolates out there? Ones that really are delicious?

Mine tasted like lard.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 31/12/2018 20:08

Bought DD some Godiva chocolate caramel lions on special offer...they were nice.

Even my kids dislike Hotel Chocolat. The last bar I bought for DS tasted like cardboard!

Shock

I got TONS of HC for Christmas and I adored every single one of them, especially the pink champagne truffles and white pralines. Just divine. I think I’ve put on half a stone scoffing them. Blush

abacucat · 31/12/2018 20:17

I love Hotel Chocolate. Send any unwanted boxes to me.

Blatherskite · 31/12/2018 20:17

In fact, having been to the Chocolate Story in York and tasted raw nibs, I think that was actually what it tasted of. Bear in mind we were given the raw nibs to show us how awful they tasted before processing.

When I go to Brussels for work, I always try to pick up a box of Corne Port Royal. They’re amazing, nothing as good easily available in the UK.

planespotting · 31/12/2018 20:19

@SirVixofVixHall Leonidas!!!
YES!

LindaLa · 31/12/2018 20:20

Sorry to break it to you all but hotel chocolat are now including palm fat.

Please check ingredients, I did it on line.

I went to buy a box, shop assistant said they've had to change recipes because of price of cacao.

Adding palm fat, not reducing price....

twoheaped · 31/12/2018 20:21

I was given some M&S Belgian truffles and they must be some of the nicest I have had.
I buy Choc Amour who is local to me but he doesn't do boxes.

TooMinty · 31/12/2018 20:23

Well I'll still trough them all no doubt! I like the Belgian truffles from M&S and Green & Black 85% cocoa.

abacucat · 31/12/2018 20:24

Shit I did not know they had changed their recipes. I have not had any this Christmas. This has made me seriously sad.

INeedNewShoes · 31/12/2018 20:26

Chocolate with soya in it should be viewed with suspicion.

AssumethePerpendicular · 31/12/2018 20:28

I’ve got some but not eaten any yet, hope they are still good.
I like Montezumas

Gotstuckwiththisname · 31/12/2018 20:28

Ritter Sport is the one. Delicious.

AssumethePerpendicular · 31/12/2018 20:29

Post too soon!
Which you can get online or there’s a few shops down south. Made in Sussex and I don’t think have any palm oil.

SealSong · 31/12/2018 20:29

Twoheaped, yes the M&S belgian truffles are some of the best chocolates that I have eaten, outstanding quality.

My DH bought me some hot chocolate from Hotel Chocolat and it’s divine. Also love their truffles.

greendale17 · 31/12/2018 20:31

Thorntons continental tastes better than our Hotel chocolate box this year. M&S Belgian truffles are very nice.

NorksAreMessy · 31/12/2018 20:35

A triumph of marketing over taste

Miranda15110 · 31/12/2018 20:35

If you like quality totally recommend Cocoa Black www.cocoablack.com

Izzy24 · 31/12/2018 20:35

Charbonnel et Walker.
Yum.

deptfordgirl · 31/12/2018 20:36

Booja booja are delicious. They're vegan but taste as good as any non vegan.

I like HC just for the fact I'm always offered a freebie when I go into a store!

BareBelliedSneetch · 31/12/2018 20:36

The little clementine caramel balls are delicious. And don’t have palm oil in.
