Hard working royals?

There are as an article today explaining the split of public engagements members of the Royal Family have done this year. Prince Charles made 507 engagements compared to Prince William’s 220 (while Meghan and Kate did just 183 between them, but Kate was pregnant and Meghan is new).

What do you think? Waste of taxpayers money? Or are they earning their keep?

They live in a gilded cage. I wouldn’t want their lives for all the money in the world.

Hushnownobodycares · 31/12/2018 18:13

Waste of money.

Charlie, Wills and Haz are all cut from the same petulant cloth and seem to be having more and more difficulty attempting to hide it.

Schmoobarb · 31/12/2018 18:15

They don’t just do engagements, most of them do a lot of charitable work as well. I don’t think they’re lazy but I agree it isn’t exactly hard graft.

I think once the queen dies it should all be really pared back and only the monarch and the next in line should receive any public monies.

I think people are missing my point. What I am saying is that their super expensive educations are wasted because they don't ever use that education. Pissing about in the Army and wearing expensive clothing doesn't require tens of thousands of pounds of schooling and university. On the whole, the members of the royal family are low achievers and poor value for money. Other people would put their education to good use, but these people don't. It's wasted on them.

knittedmouse · 31/12/2018 18:54

I'd have more respect for them if they actually did something that was valued in society. Charity this, charity that. A hell of a lot of charities exist just to make money and provide make work for people whilst providing not a lot in return. Again, poor value for money.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 31/12/2018 19:21

So my mum is knocking eighty and volunteers at her local charity shop three mornings a week. Does she get a massive free castle and untold wealth too? Cool.

Abra1de · 31/12/2018 19:27

And you base this observation on what?

headstone · 31/12/2018 19:33

I think we should only support Will’s family now and tbh since he’s admitted he doesn’t want it anyway maybe do away with the whole thing entirely.

Weightsandmeasures · 31/12/2018 19:40

William and Kate are lazy and they only show passion for hunting animals. I see nothing about these two that suggests in the slightest that they would be more legitimate than Charles.

William and Kate have done and achieved nothing of worth.

kenandbarbie · 31/12/2018 20:20

For comparison the 77 year old president of Ireland did 307 engagements in 2017:

Similar enough job really, diplomatic figurehead greeting dignitaries and going abroad.

Sarahandduck18 · 31/12/2018 20:37

What’s most bizarre is that she is still the head of state of Australia!

SillySallySingsSongs · 31/12/2018 21:16

Pissing about in the Army

Wow Hmm

Ever hear when you are in a hole stop digging?

HairyDogsFeet · 31/12/2018 22:08

Lecture us on the environment but have 3 children and travel by helicopter or 4x4. Travel between multiple homes. Hmmm

Notmyrealname85 · 31/12/2018 22:40

Pissing about in the Army

I think pp means “faking it in the army”!

Nousernameforme · 31/12/2018 23:39

The engagements are for their own benefit. They do that so they seem more human and connected with the common folk and less like scrounging playboys.

CalamityJane10 · 31/12/2018 23:52

I’ve never thought of the Queen as a scrounging playboy Confused

AspieT · 31/12/2018 23:54

Complete waste of money

sycamore54321 · 01/01/2019 00:01

If their main selling point is their charity work, can someone please explain what is it they actually do for charities? It doesn’t appear to involving donating directly to them. It seems more in the awareness-rising space, which is admirable but it is massively anti-democratic that the taxpayer funds them but had no say in which charities are given the privilege of this support. Someone mentioned Camilla and osteoporosis which appears to be a personal issue for her. Great that she is raising awareness but why should osteoporosis be given that advantage above, say, asthma or dementia? And what benefit is raising awareness anyway to charities? It means one of two things - either direct donations from the public, or being better positioned when pitching for other sources of funding, of which a large portion is public money. So the taxpayer pays Royal A to pick a cause of their own choosing and this allows the charity be better at getting money from member of the public (ie taxpayers) or from the government purse (again, taxpayers). It makes no sense to me why people see their charity work as something uniquely laudable when they are just paying for it in three different ways.

Nousernameforme · 01/01/2019 00:31

CalamityJane Before they did the whole engagement business that is what they were. They do all the hospital opening, factory tours etc in order to increase their own public image

MsJuniper · 01/01/2019 11:56

Yep get rid of 'em and replace with Irish presidential system.

Also get rid of all non-professional titles, reform and simplify the honours system, sever ties between church and state, abolish Commonwealth Realm status, reform Commonwealth.

billysboy · 01/01/2019 12:04

what about the money they bring in through foreign tourism ?

Easylay · 01/01/2019 12:34

Meanwhile Meghan is probably still smoking dope

knittedmouse · 01/01/2019 13:03

They don't actually get up each day and do work for any of these charities. They attach their names to them and attend the odd function. They may or may not take a passing interest in the work the charity does/claims to do.

Tourists will still visit even if the royal family disappeared. They'd come for the historical interest, architecture of the palaces etc.

What is prince Andrew even for? What has he ever achieved? What do his daughters do? What have they ever achieved?

katekat383 · 01/01/2019 13:10

Well done to the older Royals. The rest need to shape up because public appearances is the price they pay for privilege. Some of the younger lot are clearly lazy.
