Man doing embroidery on the train

Never before, either in public or private, have I known a man to do embroidery. But here he is, across the aisle from me, with his family all occupied with reading, games, colouring in and he’s busy doing the most intricate piece of cross stitch. Looks beautiful! And he’s not what you would call the artistic type. American, built like a lumberjack, bearded.
Anyone else know men who can embroider?

My dad did embroidery back in the 80's. He also made all our pe bags (chainstitched our names on too) and made us moccasins from leather. His handwriting is beautiful as well. You would never guess from looking at him.

My DH (small gimmicky project) and my grandad (big elaborate projects). I don't think it's that unusual. Although maybe my age. Kaffe Fassett was hardly off the telly when I was young.

I know a guy with a degree in embroidery. He fits the description of the guy you talked about. He does the most amazing pieces.

I have a big, beardy standard blokey friend who knits and does tapestries. I think he sells them on etsy... will see if I can find the link.

My husband did embroidery at (small) school. He did a house an his name :-). Bless.

Nothing wrong with that and more advanced needlework is done by men, like designing etc.

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/12/2018 18:42

It was very popular for soldiers in the WW1.
I hadn't done any for years, then recently I found a half done one. It was so relaxing. I'm going to buy some more

My 30 year old nephew likes knitting, there you go Smile.

AnnaMagnani · 30/12/2018 18:45

My Dad did crosstitch.

Over the years have met a number of male ex-RAF patients who have embroidered or crosstitched pictures of old aircraft.

Fink · 30/12/2018 18:46

I do cross stitching. Whenever I bring it out in public, e.g. on a train, someone will comment that they do it too. Sometimes it's a man. Not often, but there have been quite a few over time.

Knitting used to be very popular amongst sailors in the "olden days" (when Captain Pugwash was about) - it passed the time on long sea journeys.

TornFromTheInside · 30/12/2018 18:48

Most of the heavy rock fans I knew back in the last 70s and early 80s dabbled in embroidery - this was to embroider band logos on the back of their denim jackets!

It was never 'discussed' per se, merely acknowledged that we did it!

delboysskinandblister · 30/12/2018 18:48

ask him if he'll darn my socks. I have a pile here.

FestiveGanesh · 30/12/2018 18:48

I have a male friend who knits, sews and crochets.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 30/12/2018 18:50

Has anybody mentioned Nancy Mitford yet? Which one of her 2 love novels has a main character who embroidery/ does tapestry?

Level11 · 30/12/2018 18:50

My DP has started making cards this year. He's arty but hasn't done anything like it before - he loved it. I could see him doing embroidery actually.

ThePortlyPinUp · 30/12/2018 18:51

I have a male friend who I met through the rockabilly scene who cross stitches funky retro scenes think jukeboxes in milkshake bars.

My ds (10) is a typical boy...football mad, very cool and popular amongst his peers.

He loves sewing! I got him a sewing kit recently. I was thrilled he enjoys it.

EthelHornsby · 30/12/2018 18:52

My dad used to do cross stitch - he also made hooked rugs

PaintBySticker · 30/12/2018 18:52

My dad crocheted a tie in his youth.

borntobequiet · 30/12/2018 18:52

My son used to take his cross stitch projects to Rugby practice to fill in any sitting around time.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 30/12/2018 18:53

Back in the day my brother did very intricate embroidery on his denim jackets with heavy metal and prog rock themes.

We all used to be dab hands at sock farming and jeans patching too.

DontDeadOpenInside · 30/12/2018 18:53

My uncle does. He also made my dad's wedding cake. He's very crafty like that.

LittleCandle · 30/12/2018 18:53

My cousin does cross stitch, mostly when on holiday. He does lovely work. Henry Fonda used to cross stitch on set between takes. He said it relaxed him.

WisdomOfCrowds · 30/12/2018 18:55

I've never known anyone who embroiders. But my dad is a big bearded ex rugby player who used to do stunning silk paintings and play the flute. Not to bring down an obviously lighthearted thread but my dad was also a violent womaniser so I wouldn't read too much into the "gentle giant" image.
