Man doing embroidery on the train

Never before, either in public or private, have I known a man to do embroidery. But here he is, across the aisle from me, with his family all occupied with reading, games, colouring in and he’s busy doing the most intricate piece of cross stitch. Looks beautiful! And he’s not what you would call the artistic type. American, built like a lumberjack, bearded.
Anyone else know men who can embroider?

Always loved this cartoon, which is vaguely relevant to this thread.

Theemojiformerlyknownasprince - didn't know that about dentistry/textiles - makes sense though!

My grandad used to make clothes to supplement income when his business had lean spells - using an old fashioned pedal Singer machine. He taught my dad how to sew too and he used to customise his clothes when he was at uni. The only sewing skills my nanas and my mum have is darning. My Dad taught me how to see and use said pedal sewing machine and I taught myself how to knit/cross stitch/crochet and taught my 8 and 10 year old DS' too as well - they see me doing it and ask to do projects themselves. I used to work in the fashion industry so I don't find men with textiles skills odd.

This guy does wonderful designs; some of my favourites. Stitching isn't just for women; think of all the male tailors on Savile Row, and as a PP mentioned Mr X Stitch (who has a great book of charts as well.

A PP also mentioned a TUC leader who stitched - he was Norman Willis who was patron of the Embroiderers Guild and who wrote a column for Cross Stitcher magazine.

Before we met, DH made a lovely woollen rug, which still adorns our bedroom floor.

Has anybody mentioned Nancy Mitford yet? Which one of her 2 love novels has a main character who embroidery/ does tapestry?

Wasn't it Boy Dugdale? Not exactly a positive role model Grin
