Tipping the takeaway delivery driver

SixButterflies · 30/12/2018 17:41

Do you?

I do. 10% of the bill usually.
I always think it must be a bit of a thankless task and I am really grateful to them for bringing it to me. I know 10% isn't much but the takeaway is a real treat when you haven't much spare.

Bangladeshi tonight. So happy.Smile

I do. It’s presumably a very low paid job.

Someone once said if you can afford a takeaway you can afford to tip and that really stuck with me.

BooseysMom · 30/12/2018 17:45

We had Indian last night and tipped 10% but regretted it when the prawns tasted strange! We're all still here so they can't have gone off. I just won't order them again.

SlightAggrandising · 30/12/2018 17:47

I do. Watched a very sad docudrama about a young delivery driver who killed himself recently and it was eye opening.

SixButterflies · 30/12/2018 18:25

Gosh poor thing. Was it as a result of being a drivery driver?

No. Our usual takeaway advertises free delivery, but adds a mandatory service charge. I'm not paying more again.

Same with Deliveroo etc. You are already paying for the service they provide.

I don't actually tip anywhere in the UK though - hairdressers, delivery people, waiting staff.

In the US or somewhwere I might think differently.

DiaryofWimpyMum · 30/12/2018 18:30

I don't tip all the time but if it's say £11.30 I'd give them the 70p change but if it was £15 I'd just give them that, I don't go out of my way to tip

freeAnneBoleyn · 30/12/2018 18:33

A quid if it’s just me or a quid each of its me and my DP.

jessstan2 · 30/12/2018 18:34

I tip, not much. £2 at most but wouldn't not do it.

Megsmcgoo · 30/12/2018 18:35

No, I pay by card through a delivery app like just eat or Deliveroo which charges a fee

Youcancallmeval · 30/12/2018 18:41

Always do. The lovely pizza delivery bloke told me the other week how much he appreciates it.

Sarah22xx · 30/12/2018 18:43

I tend to tip, I normally get the same delivery driver and they're lovely.

Julianaa · 30/12/2018 18:45

I give 1€ on the few occasions we get a takeaway, which is always pizza. The order costs 11 to 18 € so it's not as much as 10%.

We live in Spain where I think it must be quite unusual to tip delivery drivers, but I think it's right. They are always pleasant and polite.

expatmigrant · 30/12/2018 18:50

Yes always do but then I'm a prolific tipper of people in low paid jobs. Drives my DH up the pole.

GrubbyHipsterBeard · 30/12/2018 18:56

Yeah a quid or two!

Crunchymum · 30/12/2018 19:06

I do. And we order mainly from Deliveroo (a third party delivery co. that charge £2.50 for delivery from local restaurants.... not sure if it's nationwide).

We always tip, even though the delivery charge is supposed to fund staff etc.....

NOTthepinkranger · 30/12/2018 19:08

I always tip, regardless of a fee as I imagine this doesn’t go to the drivers

AnyFucker · 30/12/2018 19:13

Yep.

We usually order by credit card from Just Eat and give the delivery driver a few pound coins

Mind you, we use our local takeaways so often we get Xmas cards with our names on and funnily enough always get excellent service

AnarchyKitty · 30/12/2018 19:17

I worked in a takeaway for a while. The driver got a flat fee of £15 towards petrol and got to keep the delivery fee which varied from £1.50-£4.00. Not much if it was a quiet winters night so I always tip them knowing how shit their money is.

Impatientwino · 30/12/2018 19:41

Yes we always tip £2-£3 irrespective of the order total - it generally depends on how much change we have in honesty. We always get a fast service from the two restaurants we order from and the food is always hot - might be coincidence though!

adaline · 30/12/2018 19:45

I don't tip, but I will round up if it's something like £14.20 or whatever.

SixButterflies · 30/12/2018 19:45

We order from Just Eat.
The food tonight was it's usual awesome self.
I gave him £3. He gave me a card for his plumming-on-the-side gig.

@SlightAggrandising - if it’s the same prog I watched he wasn’t a takeaway driver. Delivering takeaways is usually a cash in hand job, here they get 50p to £1 per delivery plus whatever you give on top so not well paid. Most people I know who deliver it’s a second job, my OH friend makes about £80-90 on a good Sat night & enjoys getting out so it suits him.

pippop1317 · 30/12/2018 21:14

@Musicalmistress can you rekey the name of the program?

pippop1317 · 30/12/2018 21:14

*remember
