What makes people look rich?

I was out for a walk yesterday with my family. Another family walk along the path towards us. They were dressed in their scruffs, as were we. Other than a quick ‘hello’ as we passed, we didn’t hear them talking, so no accent to gauge. They just looked rich!! Once they’d passed, my cousin turned to me and quietly said ‘loaded!’, obviously out of ear shot. We were both trying the the new work out what brought us to the same conclusion. It wasn’t clothes, accent, we don’t know them, what car they drive, what house they own, jobs they do etc.. so zero knowledge about them, but my cousin and I both had the same first impression.
We could be wrong of course Grin and this is a lighthearted thread.
But, what makes someone look rich?

Apologies for the typos.
It should read, we were both trying to then work out what had brought us to the same conclusion.

High quality scruffs/shoes
Expensive hair cuts for women

Horsemad · 30/12/2018 10:50

Confidence - the way they carried themselves?

AGapInTheMarket · 30/12/2018 10:51

No sign of wear on clothes, shoes, accessories etc! I always notice it, in my stretched, stained, bobbled clothes! I'm skint.

MrsCar · 30/12/2018 10:51

Well dressed
Natural tan
Good teeth

Nellabella · 30/12/2018 10:51

Well groomed hair
Classic well fitting plainer clothing & shoes
Good skin

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 30/12/2018 10:53

Good hair, good teeth (not fake blue white veneers, just normal well looked after) and ‘fresh’ skin. Not too much or too bright make up.

Chimchar · 30/12/2018 10:54

I saw a couple and their toddler once at a kids event. They were dressed in very cool, casual clothes....ripped jeans, t shirt, nice handbag etc but just oozed money. When I saw the guys face, we realised he was pretty famous. Then we watched them walk back to their Ferrari! Grin

I think it was the hair...she had great hair. Natural but bouncy. Good skin. Nice make up.

The guy had nice hair too. Good sunglasses.

I know exactly what you mean, but I don't know the secret!

Daisydoesnt · 30/12/2018 11:03

I'm with Nellabella - I'm convinced it's all about hair and skin, much less about the clothes. I did some last minute Xmas shopping on Monday and walking through the crowds I really noticed there is a massive difference in the quality of people's skin. I don't mean acne/ spots, I mean skin that has a health and freshness to it, which I would associate with a good diet and consistent routine. Same for hair.

DickTurpinsHat · 30/12/2018 11:28

It's usually about the hair, makeup and clothes. And by clothes I mean fabric, colour and pattern. And the way you carry yourself. So you can be dressed very scruffily but if your hair is scraped back rather than messily put up, you've got a cheap, lurid colour puffa type coat rather than a classic colour then you won't look expensive.

My dh carries himself with an air of importance, he's not remotely arrogant but the way he holds his head shows confidence.

Hoppinggreen · 30/12/2018 11:33

Hair, it’s usually hair

BumbleyBum · 30/12/2018 12:14

Hair was blonde and windswept. They did have good teeth!

OP posts:
Mayhemmumma · 30/12/2018 12:16

It's the teeth

FlashByReputation · 30/12/2018 12:18

Slim, athletic, good teeth and healthy shiny hair.

BumbleyBum · 30/12/2018 12:23

Although, I’d judged them as rich before they smiled and said hello.
They were slim builds.

OP posts:
Horsemad · 30/12/2018 12:25

It's just their general demeanour I think. As I said earlier, a 'confidence' about them.

Camomila · 30/12/2018 12:29

Its sad isn't it? That 'glowy'/'healthy looking' corresponds with rich so often, and the other way round too :(

I noticed it when I did youth work too - MC /'posh' boys were always a good couple of inches taller and jusr generally bigger than my youths.

Holidayshopping · 30/12/2018 12:29

But you can be loaded and have bad skin, a shit diet and inherited not great teeth.

Being able to afford regular good hair cuts and decent quality clothes would help though. The really ‘loaded’ people I know have been to public school which seems to have given them a sense of inate confidence in themselves which comes across in their body language. The way they stand, walk, hold themselves, speak to groups of others etc Maybe that came across.

rachelfrost · 30/12/2018 12:35

Healthy. Also you can tell if clothes are expensive, even when old and plain: expensive clothes seem to wear in rather than wear down. There’s also millions of tiny social signifiers like eyebrow style, shoe brand etc that you don’t consciously notice.

BumbleyBum · 30/12/2018 12:36

Rich looking eyebrows??? What do they look like Shock

OP posts:
Theunsungsong · 30/12/2018 12:36

My dh thinks it is in the face, a sort of looking down your nose mouth slightly open expression. He calls it ' The Waitrose Face' (after a visit to the Cirencester Waitrose where he opined that 'everyone had the same face).

Disclaimer, this is not necessarily my opinion.

SummerStrong · 30/12/2018 12:41

Love that!....'the Waitrose face' Grin

Slim
Tanned
Good hair cuts
Good teeth
Good quality / well fitting clothes
Nice makeup
Expensive perfume
Air of confidence

Jubba · 30/12/2018 12:44

What an interesting question

I live in a very affluent area. I have two friends who are billionaires. But you would never guess it. Although both always look nice. Her jewellery for example. Doesn’t scream rich. In fact. She has a story of when they went to buy a car. They’ve got Ferrari’s. And when they went in to buy it. The salemand refused to serve her. And was checking out how big the diamonds were in her rings.

I always find the poorer people are often trying to look rich. Wearing brand clothing etc. Especially sports wear. I saw some couple in town the other day. Buying their toddler boy very expensive trainers when obviously they couldn’t afford it. But he was all kitted out

I also find. Semi rich. Tend to boast. I’ve got a friend and all she does is chat about her kids. Their private school. Their house. Whilst my billionaire friends. Never talk about money. They discuss if they are going on holiday. Or buying s new house. But don’t put that out there.... it’s only because I’m close with them.

I agree with an above poster. Many have been to private school which gives you an inate self confidence.

OlennasWimple · 30/12/2018 12:45

Slim

Good hair cuts on adults, unkempt on children Wink

Clothes that may be old and faded, but were expensive to start with

Good teeth

Discreet jewelry and make up that enhances not over the top

TabithaBraithwaite · 30/12/2018 12:45

At my school you can spot the Nannies and the Mother’s very easily. The mums have designer handbags & shoes, eyebrows & eyelashes done, and Botox & fillers. They carry themselves upright and have an air of confidence & entitlement.
The Nannies look harassed and hunched
