Should cot cards be gender neutral or dont you mind pink and blue?

Thats it really. We need to order a load more and theres no point wasting the NHS money. I just wondered if we had moved on from pink and blue as i notice a lot more babies are being dressed in neutral colours. Or, does it not bother you?

I couldn’t care less if my baby had a pink one, a blue one or a ‘neutral’ one, whatever sex it was. Can’t imagine anyone caring that their baby boy had a pink cot card or vice versa. Then again I’m not sure what a cot card is!

RebeccaCloud9 · 27/12/2018 12:09

What's a cot card?

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 27/12/2018 12:10

What are cot cards? I don't really mind pink and blue. I have 2 girls and 2 boys and have dressed them in pink, blue and gender neutral colours without really thinking about it.

What is it?

Fabellini · 27/12/2018 12:13

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest - although I don’t remember when I had my babies (several years ago) that the cards were coloured. I think our NHS Trust has always used white ones.
Don’t understand why it’d be wasting money - I’m thinking of the cards with surname of mum, baby’s weight etc that are at the foot of the crib....surely they have to be there, so will get used anyway whatever colour they are?

MrsAmaretto · 27/12/2018 12:13

If plain is cheaper, just order plain. It doesn’t bother me, but it’s maybe a help to midwives and workers on the wards? Must be hard remembering who has what when just quickly asking if baby has pooped! I’d double check with the workers!

My mum couldn’t believe how difficult it was to get gender neutral yellow new baby sized when mine were born - everywhere was pink, blue or grey. In 1980 yellow was the colour you packed in your hospital bag.

Redcrayons · 27/12/2018 12:14

Don’t think we have moved on from pink and blue as far as babies are concerned.

Not really sure what a cot card is tbh.

ChanklyBore · 27/12/2018 12:15

Colours are gender neutral.

HTH

53rdWay · 27/12/2018 12:15

I’d really prefer not pink and blue. They’re going to spend the rest of their childhoods battling the pink-vs-blue thing in toys and clothes and everything else anyway, we could at least wait until the cord stump’s fallen off before starting it!

Jazzhan · 27/12/2018 12:16

Seriously? I loved (and still have) dd's cot card. I'd have been very offended if it was blue lol. I really don't get this gender neutral crap. Usually purported by feminists, who then decide that they don't like the upsurge in trans issues, where young kids don't know whether they're boys or girls.

Mad

TwitterQueen1 · 27/12/2018 12:16

It doesn't bother me at all. Visual clues are a very helpful shorthand and help people talk appropriately. You wouldn't say "how is it today?" And a gender neutral pronoun is so impersonal. I think there are more important things to worry about

BigGreenOlives · 27/12/2018 12:17

When my children were born 17-21 years ago everything was unisex. They all wore the same clothes as new borns too, yellow & green.

CoffeeCoffeeTea · 27/12/2018 12:17

Really curious, please can someone explain what a cot card is, Grin

WorraLiberty · 27/12/2018 12:17

Jazzhan what is a cot card please?

Jazzhan · 27/12/2018 12:17

Redcrayons, I think a cot card is a sort of flashcard they put on the babies cot stating name, sex, weight etc. Or that's what I'm interpreting it as being.

3out · 27/12/2018 12:18

Plain card wouldn’t bother me.

It wouldn’t bother me, but I’d rather not have a blue name card if I had a girl purely because I couldn’t be arsed with the predictable ‘political correctness gone mad’ ‘what’s wrong with pink for a girl anyway’ etc comments who don’t realise the hospital isn’t making a statement, they’re just using up old card.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 27/12/2018 12:19

They're signs that go on cots? In hospital? What, like Baby Windsor etc?
Are we starting to decide the gender of newborns then now as well?
And why are you ordering "loads"
Do you work for the nhs?
Or are you of with 25 babies or something?
Is it official World Gone Mad day?

HauntedPencil · 27/12/2018 12:20

She is merely canvassing opinion cranklybore no need to be snarky.

It wouldn't bother me either way but if I was ordering I think I'd just get plain ones.

53rdWay · 27/12/2018 12:20

And why are you ordering "loads"
Do you work for the nhs?

Pretty obviously yes, as she talks about spending NHS money in the OP!

NerrSnerr · 27/12/2018 12:20

3out How many people will even see the cot card or if their around would they even notice? We had a card behind my bed with stuff on I think but the colour didn't register. Why would it?

Highfever · 27/12/2018 12:21

Cot card.

Details of baby with date, time of birth weight. Mine has a lovely message beon the back by the midwife. Only got it for my eldest child

My partner has his from the 70s and it was sponsored by SMA formula.

HauntedPencil · 27/12/2018 12:22

They aren't deciding the gender of Newborns they are merely labelling the cot.

The babies sex is determined at birth.

Clearly she is ordering a supply and dosent want to waste money if a lot of people wouldn't like using pink or blue cards.

Jazzhan · 27/12/2018 12:23

OP, I'd continue with blue and pink. You'll find most people (outside of Mumsnet and one actress whose name escapes me) still buy blue or pink.

SuperstarDJ · 27/12/2018 12:25

I didn’t get a cot card for either of my two DDs who were both born in the last couple of years.

If I did get one I think I’d rather a white one. Though it wouldn’t be the end of my world if I were to get a pink or blue one.

twoheaped · 27/12/2018 12:26

I still have my 50 year old got card, white. I also have both my dd's pink ones.
