But also how do you know you need to add salt or how much if you haven't tasted it first?

Only on baked potatoes or chips.

Nothing else gets salt on it. Yet my mum showers her food in salt.

Boiled eggs are too eggy without salt ! I have been known to put tiny bit of salt on rich or fruity toast if the salted butter (lashings) doesn’t quite do enough. Luckily I am fit and healthy with normal (slightly low) blood pressure so my salt intake is less worrying than it might be, but I do sometimes think I could cut back a little.

I would also eat less salt if I didn’t use maldon flakes. Something about they way they dissolve on the tongue is extremely lovely.

Because I eat very salty and no one else adds as much salt as I would like. Even I don't when I cook as it needs to be ok for DD and OH too. So I salt my own cooking.
I add a sprinkle over everything and then add more as needed.
