I don't smoke, either.

BeardedMum · 25/12/2018 22:36

Well the problem is thst its quite difficult to moderate as salt is already added to so much of what we eat. If you add salt on top you are likely to get too mych of it. Fact.

halfwitpicker · 25/12/2018 22:36

Christ it's salt not feckin crack Hmm

Lifeisjustabitshit · 25/12/2018 22:49

Yes, always otherwise I find food bland and boring. Usually add salt to cooking water too. DH doesn’t use salt when cooking and I don’t enjoy his food very much.

Not fact because some people actually read labels and have minds and are capable of using their brains rather than blanket banning foot items. Hmm

MrsTerryPratcett · 25/12/2018 22:58

I am Terry and I'm an autocondimenter.

Salt on EVERYTHING. Bwahahahahaha.

I have lower than average blood pressure. Optimal rather than normal IYSWIM. And I have an agreement with DH that I will stop when my BP gets to above normal. in fact it did during pregnancy and I made the midwife tell him it wasn't salt related. Grin

BeardedMum · 26/12/2018 09:10

Salt doesn’t just affect you BP negatively.

I don’t think the type of person checking labels for salt amongst other ingredients is the same type of person who puts salt on everythingWink

chatwoo · 26/12/2018 09:24

I will pepper most things without checking, unless I know I have done enough already during the cooking process. But will only add a bit of salt to eggs, or things like tomatoes. If I've cooked it, I know it's already been seasoned, and I find a lot of take away / other food is already pretty heavily salted.

FruitCider · 26/12/2018 21:20

Salt doesn't effect your BP negatively*

Eating salt raises the amount of sodium in your bloodstream and wrecks the delicate balance, reducing the ability of your kidneys to remove the water. The result is a higher blood pressure due to the extra fluid and extra strain on the delicate blood vessels leading to the kidneys.

dicdicnurse · 26/12/2018 21:25

I have found my fellow salty people! I love salt, I add it to near enough everything. I understand that it is bad for me and have tried to go cold turkey (now dreaming of a turkey roll with mayo and salt), but I end up being miserable and not enjoying eating! I gave it 2 months without once and hated every minute. I love salt!

Lifeisjustabitshit · 28/12/2018 08:44

@fruitcider so what about those of us who, in spite of our high salt content diets, still have pathologically low blood pressure (mine is regularly 90/50 and rarely much above 100 systolic). I can’t see how it is affecting my blood pressure negatively with those readings!!

And yes I do know I’m not the norm!!

Fluffyears · 28/12/2018 08:49

I also have low blood pressure. Those electric readers always show it as super high so the doctor does it the old fashioned way and it’s low. Is that maybe why we crave salt it’s our body trying to sort out the blood pressure thing?

GobblersKnob · 28/12/2018 09:00

I have really low blood pressure too. Year ago a GP told me that 'in the US they would tell me to eat more salt, but they don't do that here'. TBF I eat lots and it's not helped.

tryinganewname · 28/12/2018 09:05

DH does, on single thing.

HeronLanyon · 28/12/2018 09:10

I have a deep love of salt and salty food. I Always tase first in a restaurant as it’s often perfect for me already. Almost always saltnwithout tasting with my own cooking (I don’t add in cooking as some don’t have my salt addiction). and/or others’ home cooking where I have become familiar it’s their salt levels in their cooking I dont at all think it is rude - it doesn’t mean the cooking is not fantastic, simply that I know I wil enjoy it a bit saltier. I would never think someone else was being rude to do this. how on earth am I supposed to know everyone’s salt tolerance and tweak every plate accordingly ?? I cook with little salt and some do add before tasting cos they know this. Makes sense to me.

Sarah22xx · 28/12/2018 09:23

I only put salt on chips

exLtEveDallas · 28/12/2018 09:25

I do, and it drives DH mad.

But I'm not sure that it's rude. Surely tasting and then adding is more rude? Tasting then "I don't like what you have cooked so I am going to make it more appetising" ??
(I feel this way about people - looking at you DH - who another their food in hot sauce after tasting it)

Fantail · 28/12/2018 09:37

I always taste food first. I find that eggs normally need salt, but at a restaurant food should be seasoned properly.

I eat very little if any processed food, so actually do need to add salt. My BP is on the low side too, and ensuring I have some salt in my diet means it doesn’t go too low.

GrammarTeacher · 28/12/2018 10:36

I hate salt. I much prefer other types of seasoning. I have no objection to others eating obscenely salty food though. The chips at work now come ready salted. It's disgusting. Although probably for the best that I can't eat them!

TheRealJoseph · 28/12/2018 16:43

Every cook/chef has their own idea, on how food should be seasoned.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/12/2018 16:45

Mainly on anything like potatoes/chips etc.

HeronLanyon · 28/12/2018 17:24

Will no one think of the pepper ?? At the risk of derailing a salt thread . . .

My dp and I had roast potatoes last night and a detailed discussion about why we would never put pepper in chips roast potatoes. We had huge difference when it came to mased pots though (I love salt pepper and lashings of butter on mashed potatoes. Apparently pepper on mashed potatoes is ‘disgusting’. I think dp’s pepper on caprese (any raw tomoato) is sacreligious ! Salt creates no such strong (intransigent) views !

TheRealJoseph · 28/12/2018 17:32

I use chilli powder, paprika dried mixed herbs as condiments.

TheRealJoseph · 28/12/2018 17:33

Forgot too add salt & pepper aswell.

Bloomini · 28/12/2018 17:37

Salt is quite addictive so the more you use the more you want I find.

I rarely add salt to food unless it's boiled eggs, baked potatoes and chips.

I'd never put salt on a dish I was about to eat without tasting it first. Such bad manners too.
