It's an insult to the cook to season before you taste.

thebaronetofcockburn · 25/12/2018 15:30

Extra salt is very rarely ever needed!

To some peoples' taste, it is. Hmm

user1495884620 · 25/12/2018 15:32

I have never understood why it is an insult to season before you taste? Seasoning first implies you like well-salted food. Seasoning after implies that you have tried it and it isn't very tasty.

Rosepetalgeranium · 25/12/2018 15:39

My parents never taste before adding salt, they eat as soon as the plate is in front of them also, they don't wait until everyone is ready. Meat is never rested, everything is overcooked, everything is plated up and soaked in gravy, you are never asked your preferences. There is never a napkin (serviette as they refer to them) and never a starter.

My parents think I am the weird one and have funny ideas because I don't dig in eating when my Mum is dishing out the next persons meal served as she enjoys and I don't want to eat her leather soaked in Bisto gravy granules.Hmm

OP, They are clueless in life in general who tried with all their might to drag me down at every opportunity. They are children in the bodies of adults. Sigh!

You have my sympathies, but on the plus side it sounds like you're switched on Smile

Yes, I have naturally low sodium blood levels and low blood pressure, salting my food gets my systolic over 100, I must crave salty food for this reason....

chemenger · 25/12/2018 17:14

Never, I hardly ever add salt to anything. I did when I was a child because I thought, for some unknown reason, that salting food cooled it down. Once I realised it just made it salty I stopped. I like food that tastes of something other than salt, although salt in moderation does enhance flavour.

HildaZelda · 25/12/2018 17:15

Only chips here too, but I don't use a lot of salt in general.

MattMagnolia · 25/12/2018 18:41

I crave salt because I have a poor sense of smell or taste but I don’t shake salt over my food because it’s as bad for you as spooning sugar over everything.
I’m surprised at all the people here who risk serious disease by eating excess salt just because they like it.

BeardedMum · 25/12/2018 18:45

Never. We don’t even have salt in the house so never use it in cooking. We do cook with spices a lot so salt is not needed.

OrdinaryGirl · 25/12/2018 18:45

If someone you know has cooked for you, it's just plain rude to salt food before tasting it. 🤷🏼‍♀️
You might as well be honest about it and preface your reaching for the salt cellar with 'I don't trust you to have seasoned this appropriately so I'm not even going to bother trying it.'

BeardedMum · 25/12/2018 18:46

Salt and salty food is bad for you isn’t it? I didn’t think people put salt in their cooking anymore tbh

MrsTommyBanks · 25/12/2018 18:48

Not usually no.
But for some inexplicable reason I did with my Christmas dinner.
And the lid fell off the salt grinder.
Salty sprouts are not nice.
Xmas Sad

IncyWincyGrownUp · 25/12/2018 18:54

Chips, yes. I usually add pepper to carrots too. Very rarely need salt for anything else.

Hofuckingho · 25/12/2018 18:57

My DH does and it drives me nuts. I frequently tell him to taste the food first, as I've already seasoned it.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 25/12/2018 19:00

Nope, tis rude to salt something someone has cooked you without first tasting it.

thebaronetofcockburn · 25/12/2018 19:02

Of course it isn't. What a daft idea. It's fine in moderation.

Aridane · 25/12/2018 19:03

Depends

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 25/12/2018 19:39

Am I only one wondering if the salters are smokers? Sweeping generalisation coming up......only over salters I know are smokers

IncyWincyGrownUp · 25/12/2018 19:45

I don’t smoke. I just like slightly salty chips.

AnotherPidgey · 25/12/2018 20:01

I do it with pepper. Basic foods are unlikely to have enough pepper added to jazz them up prior to serving.

Salt I wouldn't as salt is more likely to be added in cooking and sauces such as gravy and may well be seasoned enough.

Fluffyears · 25/12/2018 20:02

Don’t smoke and like salty foods, unlikely that anyone will have salted something enough for me.

GobblersKnob · 25/12/2018 20:05

Always, no such thing as too salty.

GobblersKnob · 25/12/2018 20:05

(Also not a smoker).
